Smallwood, Richard - Oh Lord, Stand By Me Lyrics

[Verse 1:]
There are times we stand alone,
although we've done no wrong;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

There are times we stand to test,
even when we've done our best;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

[Verse 2:]
If you don't know the Lord
in the pardon of your sins;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

Just open up your heart
and let Jesus walk on in;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

[Chorus:]
Oh Lord, stand by me,
while I walk this lonesome road.
Oh lord stand by me,
help me bear this heavy load.

If I stumble Lord, pick me up,
help me drink this bitter cup;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

[Verse 3:]
When everything goes wrong,
and there's trouble all in your home;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

I don't worry and I don't fret,
'cause God Almighty never failed me yet;
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

[Chorus]

[Vamp:]
Oh Lord, oh Lord,
oh Lord, oh Lord.

[Ending:]
oh Lord (oh Lord),
oh Lord (oh Lord),
stand by me (stand by me).

    I remember the Gospel Chorus of the Second New Hope Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio singing this song during my childhood in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Deacon Smith sang the lead, and he could light the church up when he sang. He also had a daughter named Evelyn that was an outstanding singer also.
