Slaves - The Upgrade, Pt. II Lyrics

The devil wears a white dress
Oh, she cries for something better
Her tears never hit the floor
All she wants is something deeper

Left stranded, still standing
From the joy it brings

Just another drama queen for the masses
Fading in the limelight
Just another drama queen for the masses
Girl you do it alright

Give up the ghost
Time to put it all to rest
Dig your own grave
Oh, you're dying to impress

I poured my soul into it all
And that's more than I can say for yourself
A man who desires revenge
Should dig two fucking graves

Just another drama queen for the masses
Fading in the limelight
Just another drama queen for the masses
Girl you do it alright

Give up the ghost
Time to put it all to rest
Dig your own grave
Oh, you're dying to impress

I want you all to myself
And I barely made it out alive
I've got nothing to lose
I've got nothing
I've got nothing to lose
Let's give the devil his dues
Let's give that motherfucker his dues

Just another drama queen for the masses
Fading in the limelight
Just another drama queen for the masses
Girl you do it alright

Give up the ghost
Time to put it all to rest
Dig your own grave
Oh, you're dying to impress

Slaves The Upgrade, Pt. II Comments
  1. A.... R....

Why is everyone hating on this? It’s the heavier sound of slaves and they even do heavy uniquely

  2. S.... ....

I just heard this on Jonny Craigs pandora and it is so damn good. He's such a talented soul. We all have our pasts and skeletons so who are we to judge!

  3. M.... G....

    dj0nt intr0 br0

    M.... G....

I thought that at first. and looked at the comments to see if anyone noticed and saw your comment first

  4. B.... ....

    so theres no part 1?!

    B.... ....

Jonny did part one himself before Slaves. It's on his album Find What You Love and Let it Kill You. I highly recommend that album.

    B.... ....

@IzzyJayy Graham oh, you're right! i like that album but it's nothing like ADIAQYDKHTA imo, so i didnt pay much attention to it. But thanks for your reply, i have a playlist in which I bring together split songs like this and organize them as it supposed to be, i'll add this two to it :) . Cheers!

  5. L.... ....

yup, we all know this is for amanda

  6. E.... L....

Slaves is the best!!!!!!!!!! Wish there was some screaming in there tho, that would have made this song perf!!!

    E.... L....

u could always listen to dance gavin dance with jonny if u like the screaming, but I love clean vocals so I prefer this, Jonnys singular work, and emarosa😈

    E.... L....

+Emma Levy yeah dance gavin dance is this with screams but i honestly perfer this without the screams for some reason i dont know why it just wouldnt be the same lol

  7. g.... ....

They're a good band but feel like they can come up with better lyrics... but other then that it's good.
    Just my opinion

    g.... ....

it was the opposite for me, I think the instrumentals could be better but I love the singing and lyrics

  8. L.... M....

there is no part 1 :o

    L.... M....

It is on a solo album Jonny did before Slaves. Check it out on "Find What You Love and Let it Kill You."

  9. D.... S....

    Macbooks

  10. J.... S....

Fuckin dope! Best he's done since Emarosa.

  11. M.... L....

Jonny Craig on some new level shit with his music everythime and im never dissapointed. Love his music! ♡

  12. C.... B....

I hate to be the negative prick on opinions of bands, but these guys are terrible imo. They just seem like a knock off of SwS and PtV. Fuck maybe i hate those bands so much that any band that sounds like them sucks to me. I know im probably ignorant for that view, but fuck man. WHAT HAPPENED TO REAL POST HARDCORE MUSIC.

  13. C.... ....

    Emarosa 2.0
    but still great!

  14. E.... Y....

Dance Gavin Dance, Emarosa and Slaves... One word Jonny has a unique voice!

  15. S.... ....

    sounds so great

  16. C.... S....

The song just sounds slow for me to put on my ipod, the lyrics don't really do it justice either compared to what johnny has done in the past with other bands. hopefully all of his song will not be this slow.

  17. A.... C....

Jonny Craig should make The Upgrade PT III when he makes his solo R&B album doe. Im loving the story here.

  18. D.... ....

Love this song. It grows on you the more you listen.

  19. A.... ....

This track was really disappointing to me. The mixing is off, the lyrics are kinda uninteresting, I just think Jonny can do so much better. I just reviewed Slaves debut album on my channel, would love to hear what the fans are thinking. Check it out and leave me a comment!

    A.... ....

    ARTV
I didn’t know you liked slaves , nice seeing you here

  20. M.... ....

    I dig it.

  21. C.... 9....

I think the bass player was playing one note the whole song

  22. J.... V....

    Sounds like chris brown jesus

  23. f.... ....

@Jaime Gardner wtf were you expecting?

  24. D.... L....

this is weird/strange/odd music that is difficult to sink in at first ,,,but ,,,, the more I play it the more I sing. its starts to kick in like a tiger.

All Jonnys projects are a bit out off tempo and tune, but I am a huge fan of all his projects.

    I would die if one day he would play a song together with;
More Than A Thousand _ Vasco Ramos
    Monuments_ Band

  25. s.... ....

Jonny sounds just as amazing as he always had. But can we please get a different song? All his songs in emarosa, solo, and so on seem to be about the same thing. Just was hoping for something different.

  26. i.... ....

Sounds alright but those lyrics... does anyone else feel like they're just a compilation of over used phrases that don't really form anything complete?

    i.... ....

Yeah, I miss the WISIRO lyrics

    i.... ....

If you listen to jonny craig for the lyrics.....youre doing it wrong

  27. L.... C....

who recorded this.. the voice is getting washed out.

  28. P.... ....

    It's alright, I guess.

  29. c.... b....

This is a diss to Amanda . The upgrade was about him loving her and marrying her, the upgrade II is about his breakup and her attachment to him.

  30. R.... O....

    I'd like this if I didn't repeat

  31. M.... ....

Better than the new Emarosa song

  32. T.... M....

drums are really lacking. and instrumentally in general. I think I came in here expecting it to sound more like DGD. probably shouldn't have. JC is still killing though. Props to him :)

  33. j.... ....

the riff fits the theme of the song. not every part of every song has to be huge. its called song writing and structure

  34. B.... ....

So let me get this right, The Upgrade is about him marrying her because she is the love of his life. Now in this song it's about him realizing the mistake he made marrying her?

  35. D.... B....

Jonny is a fucking beast, stoked for this album.

  36. C.... G....

@alex lyman Came here for the music... Read a few comments. Thought, Damn this guy rocks.. <3 how you actually make it a point to take time out and comment back, when there is no need to explain yourself or your music. However by doing so, you gain new fans. You won me over!! ;-)

  37. S.... C....

This is pretty sick... Screams would've made it perfect though. But it's still awesome! Can't wait till Slaves comes back to Dallas!

  38. T.... M....

I think he is trying to add his own Solo Vibe to the band which will not work so well

  39. M.... M....

Took me a second to really start to like this song.. but now this song is fucking perfect. Just turn it up loud as you can and try not to belt out that hook.

  40. A.... H....

i enjoy Jonny Craig, and a few of the other musicians in this band, but this band is so fucking lame.

  41. c.... ....

    Boring as...

  42. K.... M....

Love this song. I think it sounds great

  43. x.... S....

This is good, stop with the "I don't like the chuggy riffs" or "They're not doing it right" stuff.
    Desconchetumarizence hueones!

  44. j.... ....

I wasn't a fan of the Nu-Metalcore sound, but if Jonny is a part of it, I'm down. This is a little more subtle than OM&M and Issues. Definitely can dig it.

  45. J.... G....

my nigga jonny craig is back

  46. H.... A....

I love how Jonny ridiculed bands like Crown The Empire (wrongfully) for using open note chugs and yet, here we are.
Still a good song, just laughing at the hypocrisy.

  47. H.... T....

the more i hear it, it's growing on me. the fire down below is incredible and the rest of the album sounds pretty stunning so i'm very excited for its release!

  48. A.... M....

sounds almost as uninspired as the first single, though I prefer this over the two, lesser of two evils, I suppose. It's not that it's bad, and it's not that it's unoriginal, I enjoy the track, I just can't see myself investing time listening to it. I'm sure a lot of people can see the merit in thinking this one through: is this a song that will stick with you for years, like "lemon meringue tie", or "set it off like napalm"? I still regularly rock those songs in the car, this, I can't see being something that makes a lasting impression in the history of my musical life.

  49. T.... W....

Oh and also......if you can understand what Jonny is singing in most songs, you must be a magician cause....its almost impossible haha He doesn't have good diction or pronunciation but thats his charm ;D

  50. T.... W....

I guess its the original Jonny fans that pretty see the quality in everything that he does! i cant really hear how this song isn't working, so perhaps im biased?
Im just pissed that no one can ever be happy, especially after everyone asks him to go back to doing stuff like this!
I dont know about you but I cant wait to see them when they come to Australia later this year! Ill be front row sing my fucking heart out.

  51. M.... ....

I think were all just to used to being blown away by jonny craig every time hes with a new band or releases new songs. I can understand this is pretty mediocre not saying its awful but its just "ehh"

  52. t.... l....

I've been so excited for Slaves.
Seems like a great group of guys and I know Jonny will thrive here. I'm stoked for the rest of this album.

  53. M.... ....

I like the singing, but the lyrics are terrible. Jonnys voice is angelic, like always.

  54. C.... Y....

I'd like to see any of you people write a better song, oh you can't cause besides listening to music and labeling yourself a big time critic y'all aren't shit, you can be a critic when you sell a million albums other than that you guys can't say shit about this awesome song

  55. t.... ....

    Haters gonna hate.

Make more songs like this, I've always wanted Jonny's voice in a heavier sounding band. And now its finally here, I will be picking up this album

  56. J.... ....

The lyrics just seem weak in "The fire down below" and this song (Constantly repeating the same lines, really works only well when it isn't muddy so he can do his melody/accapellas which are unlike anyone else in this world) hopefully it will be better.

  57. F.... ....

Jonny needs to go back to DGD, because they're really shitty now without him.

  58. J.... S....

love the guitar riffs. jonny is jonny as always. haha so excited for this album. i like the heavy part. especially because i know that alex and the rest of slaves are smart enough to not over do the heavy djenty part, everything is good in moderation. ik i'll be satisfied as i already am. thank you slaves

  59. S.... O....

Such a solid tune. I've never been a huge fan of JC besides older DGD, but I can actually get with this. And the instrumentals are so sick. I wish the whole album had a heavier tone to it like this. But hey, it's their music not mine, right? Excited for some more tunes fellas.

  60. J.... ....

Awwww yeah. This is what I've been waiting for. This is so good. Honestly though, I think some beefy screams somewhere would complete this song. But for real. This shit is awesome.

  61. m.... ....

Like a lot of bands in this scene, it's just so formulaic. There is a certain amount of predictability that you can apply to this music that makes it boring, and without heart. That's why people loved DGD and Emarosa with Jonny, bc musically they were outside the chugga chugga-ness of this scene, it felt a bit more pure, more human, and you add jonnys voice, it was perfect. These guys are obviously very talented musicians, but they have carved a niche for themselves that only allow to do so much musically, they cut themselves short to fit a scene it seems. I mean, they should be playing periphery like riffs, not designing canvases for jonny to sing over, just like every bit of music that has been released outside of dgd and emarosa for jonny. He's like a rapper, they right a dope beat and bring jonny to sing over it, I wonder how much he contributes to song structure and so on. I'd really like to see how they write songs.

  62. q.... ....

this instrumental is weird... the mix is weird. Nothing stands out . Not even the vocals . The drumming is boring for this song .     IDK  i hope the rest of the album is great though

  63. A.... T....

Love it, pre-ordering this album was a wise decision!

  64. H.... G....

    AWESOME :o

  65. 2.... ....

Love when it hits at 1:18!

  66. D.... ....

Another meh song from Slaves. JC's weak songwriting is very evident again, with a rather uninteresting melody and boring and repeated lyrics. The only part of the vocals that stands out as really good to me is when he says "you do it all right" in the chorus. Instrumentals are fine. He's got an amazing voice but it's not being utilized properly

  67. Z.... B....

like the song but i really hope that when the record is out jonnys voice sticks out more because i can barely hear him. i. do. not. like. that.

    Z.... B....

and it was released on my bday so it was a good present

  68. L.... ....

Jonny has a great voice, and Alex is a good guitarist, but the chuggy riff in this song is just uninspired...

    L.... ....

I prefer the "chuggy" riffs. Why should the need to think of something overly complicated to impress people when they can just to a few chugs to fit the melody? The chugging aspect is what's getting me excited for this album. It fits a more modern sound and seems like something I'd listen to

  69. P.... ....

Is it just me or does Danny Worsnop's vocals post-surgery sound a lot like Johnny's? I'm not comparing their skill because comparing 2 different genres would be stupid. They just sound very similar.

  70. A.... A....

    Djonny Craig

  71. Z.... H....

Its ok. nothing more nothing less

  72. W.... A....

Like someone else has said, both this and "The Fire Down Below" seem to have some muddy mixing. It's a bit hard to comprehend what Jonny is saying unless you listen extremely close. On another note, I'm digging the instrumental on this track but it seems like the vocals are all over the place (not saying he's out of key or anything of that sort) in the sense that... I don't know how to say it, I guess it's not as melodic as I'd want it? I loved Jonny's vocals in DTBM I & 2 as well as Relativity and Emarosa's self-titled. Hopefully the rest of the album really pulls it all together and if not... this is only SLAVES' first album, I'm sure it won't be the last.

    W.... A....

I can understand him in almost anything he's been in. Including westerhalts, but the reason for the songs being muddy is that it's YouTube. Once the album actually comes out in full quality you will be able to tell how good the mix is.

    W.... A....

Nigga is you deaf or nah???

    W.... A....

Yeah, you can understand him, but you have to focus on his lyrics. I agree with some of what OP said, but I think that they make Jonny's voice that way for a reason. They did it often with emarosa. It makes it so you can either rock out with the instrumental, or focus on the lyrics. I dig it, it makes them unique.

    W.... A....

    Robert:
I think that it is hard to comprehend what jonny is saying (in addition to the muddy mixing) is because --even though his voice is amazing-- diction is not his strong point (or he doesn't care enough about it?), unfortunately.

    W.... A....

  73. R.... R....

im glad theres a jonny craig :)

  74. .... ....

    Like it!

  75. U.... T....

Also the Leads should be turned up a little I like them a lot but can barely hear 'em!

  76. U.... T....

The song was all right. It wasn't bad and it wasn't great just meh. Maybe it'll rub off on me because I still love the intro a lot.

  77. T.... ....

This looks like a darker version of Emarosa's last album cover, do I sense some tension? ;)

  78. M.... F....

    Loved the emotion

  79. b.... ....

I feel like the heavy parts just sound awkward with his vocals...good song overall though

  80. x.... B....

Love love love it.You guys have been working hard and it's paying off.For jc fans such as myself,if they are true fans than they will love it too.not everyone will and you can't please everyone.stay true to who the band is.everything about this song rocks !!!! Can't wait to see you guys in canada!!!!

  81. D.... S....

    I can dig it.

  82. l.... p....

the instrumentals dont really go with this track but i will say it is a good track overall jonny needs a creamer in heavy songs for them to get that pop i would have enjoyed more of that angry yell thing he did

  83. U.... S....

The instruments are dull, and generic. Luckily, johnny's voice turns everything it touches into gold.

  84. G.... D....

I love the guitar parts maybe just turned down a little...but it's weird cause Johnny sounds good in anything but this wasn't hittin. Speakin of hittin the drums were on point Hey Tai #thatsbae

  85. E.... ....

Dang! Cant wait the rest of songs on the album!

  86. J.... G....

I said to myself before I opened this video "if I open this I guarantee it's going to start with some uninspired, shitty djent riff", and would you fucking look at that!

    J.... G....

    I love rocket ships!

    J.... G....

@***** where do i start. I do make money doing what I love, I make drums for a living and I'm very fulfilled because of it. I listen to a pretty wide array of music, metal to pop to a lot of electronic, the only stuff i won't give a shot is country really. Lastly, you're also talking shit over the internet so i don't know why you wouldn't take your own advice and stop talking shit over the internet to someone who has a different opinion to you. I think you need to grow up a bit kid :)

    J.... G....

He was open minded enough to ask for Jonny's best songs, so I don't know why people are still complaining.

    J.... G....

@iHeartbound He was criticizing the djent chugs and you automatically assumed he was hating on JC.

    J.... G....

This is so djentest djent i had ever heard. Not 1 second.

  87. G.... C....

    sleeping with sirens?

    G.... C....

@Alex Palmer If your first comment was you being a jackass, then why continue to be a jackass? Seriously, I don't care if SWS has fans that go off and bitch out anyone who does like them, I mean One Direction fans do the same thing and One Direction sucks. I don't even care if Kellin Quinn can sing, and sing well. I just personally think that SWS's is shitty. Seriously, Sleeping With Sirens does not truly help people though. They are the band that started charging their fans to take pictures and give autographs, so in my book they just want money from their fans. SWS couldn't care less about the well-being of their fans, it just so happens that their music mirrors the same feelings that the fans have, and therefore it helps the fans cope. SWS did not write their music with their fans in mind, they wrote their music with their own feelings and experiences in mind. I'm sorry, but they are a band. Their job is to make music. Where does the money come from? Not from the music producers, the bands get money from the fans, whether they help their fans or not is not their concern.

    G.... C....

@Alex Palmer Oh, and I never said their music had no meaning for anyone, it's just that their music was written to have meaning for the band, not for the fans. So, dont call me ignorant for telling the truth. I also never said Kellin Quinn sucked because he sounded like a girl, I just personally do not like the sound of the band. Also, there is no way hundreds of thousands of people were on the verge of suicide when barely a thousand people kill themselves every year, hell it's not even likely that SWS has hundreds of thousands of fans. That would be more true for a more famous band like Metallica or Pantera. Also, you assume that I love Jonny Craig, when I don't even think he's the best singer ever (the best vocalist was and always will be Mitch Lucker...or maybe M. Shadows...or maybe Paul Mazurkiewicz) I just think Jonny Craig is a better singer than Kellin Quinn.

    G.... C....

@Alex Smith Mitch sucked live just so you know, but SWS has millions of fans, considering there are thousands of fans coming out to their shows every day in hundreds of different cities, some of their festival sets have tens of thousands of people, and look at the number of likes they have on facebook. Over 2.6 million likes. It's safe to say not all those who do like the page listen often to the band, but I am sure most would consider themselves fans. Also, no, I am very sure SWS writes a decent number of their songs for more than just themselves, considering they aren't the most self centered people in the scene. But Matt Shadows is a good vocalist, but I wouldn't go as far to say him, or Mitch were the best vocalists in all of music, considering there are vocalists in other genres that are much much more talented. Maybe in their genres they are up there. Personally I think Caleb Shomo is much more talented of a vocalist, as well as Jeremy McKinnon, Jonny Craig, and the lead singer of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk is very good as well. I'm not saying Mitch and Matt aren't good, just I prefer others, and wouldn't go as far as saying they're the best overall vocalists.

    G.... C....

@Alex Palmer actually, I've seen Mitch live and he sounded the same. Anyways, you can stop trying to sway my opinion of SWS by raving about how large their fan base is because it won't work. Also, who said that an artist writing solely on personal experiences is self-centered? It's not, art is supposed to be based on personal experiences. I. Was also not stating that matt and Mitch were the best, just better than Kellin. Actually, Freddie Mercury is regarded as pretty much the best singer in music. O

    G.... C....

Don't compare him with the best you peasant.

  88. j.... ....

been following JC for a long long time, i just hope that he stays in Slaves

    j.... ....

Me too, I hope they stay together and make albums for a good while at least.

  89. G.... K....

Amazing song! Keep it like this guys! (:

    G.... K....

Theres a couple like this on the album! it's a wide variety!

  90. N.... S....

Great songs, really looking forward to seeing Slaves tour in Canada.

    N.... S....

We can't wait to come, love it there!

  91. m.... n....

am I the only one waiting for some screams to appear in this song?

  92. m.... n....

am I the only one waiting for some screams to appear in this song?

  93. R.... F....

Excellent track! Vocals AND music... Looking forward to the album.. Hopefully see you guys in Scotland at some point.

    R.... F....

Oh man! we hope so as well!

  94. n.... ....

    Love it!

    n.... ....

    Thank you! <3

  95. N.... W....

This is all i ever wanted to JC. amazing.

    N.... W....

    Glad you approve! thank you!

  96. S.... B....

will there be game of thrones references in future songs? o:

    S.... B....

I'm sure JC through a lil in there ;)

    S.... B....

    @alex lyman Threw*

    S.... B....

  97. c.... V....

i like how the reaper is next to a dog or the fox from emarosa self titled album lol shots fired

    c.... V....

    Hahaha not intended!

  98. J.... M....

i dont see how any of you can say j craig hasnt progressed as an artist. These lyrics are probably some of the deepest and best written hes done. Take a little bit of thinking behind them. His voice is better than ever and he really sings with some motivation and passion. The guitar works in this are really intricate and sound so damn hypnotizing in the background. This shit is fire, and im too stoked to see them in may and hear the rest of this album.

    J.... M....

Wow, thank you so much! i wish i could show it to you now, but i am excited for you to hear the rest!

  99. L.... C....

Reminds me of Emarosa but a bit heavier either way I'm loving it and it's sounds amazing 😄

    L.... C....

Ha! Thank you man! Glad you dig it!
