When this song was written, I was working the graveyard shift, mostly outdoors, for a railroad in some of the most desolate areas of my hometown. The mood and tempo of Night Shift are so perfect for those years.

What exactly did you do at this job at the railroad tracks and do these kind of jobs exist anymore?

I was shacking up with a goth chick (she was the one that turned me on to the 'Alternative Rock-post Punk Scene) back in the mid 80's and she asked me if I understood the lyrics to the song? I said no and she claims that the song is about vampire(s) that visit in the night, lol.

It is exactly for me! But you know: If the song is psychedelic and "heavy", sometime I have to use the irony. And this song is "heavy" as the stone mountain and "psychedelic" as the narcotic trance! So I it the simple joke.
By the way: My favorite songs of Sioux are "Drifter", "Suburban Relapse" and "Voodoo Dolly" And they are really strange. My ex wife claimed about: "Only the psychopathic units can listen to the music like this"! Maybe I'm the psycho because I still like this music? Who knows?

first of all I don't think anyone has ever heard enough music to make such a claims and it depends what do you mean by dark, if you do mean what I do I'd say I have heard plenty of darker tunes and last point is - I am not sure such a thing can be quantified… some candicates of darker than this would be - probably any song from Rheia by Oathbreaker, probably any song from Kingdome Come by Fiordmoss, probably anything made by Steve Roden

I think "Night Shift" is the masterpiece of the entire JUJU album. It has an atmosphere of its own.
Mc Geoch`s guitar sounds like thick fog. Budgies drumming`s so heavy & the lyrics dealing with Yorkshire ripper.
This song is heavier than any heavy metal song.
