Sinatra, Frank - I Could Have Told You Lyrics

I could have told you
She'd hurt you
She'd love you a while
Then desert you
If only you asked
I could have told you so
I could have saved you
Some crying
Yes I could have told you she's lying
But you were in love
And didn't want to know
I hear her now
As I toss and turn and try to sleep
I hear her now
Making promises she'll never keep
And soon it's over
And done with
She'll find someone new to have fun with
Through all of my tears
I could have told you so
I hear her now
As I toss and turn and try to sleep
I hear her now
Making promises
She'll never keep
And soon it's over
And done with
She'll find someone new to have fun with
Through all of my tears
I could have told you so

Sinatra, Frank I Could Have Told You Comments
  1. M.... L....

Frank called three albums his "suicide albums:" ("No One Cares (1959 arranged by Gordon Jenkins), Where Are You (1957 arranged by Gordon Jenkins), Only The Lonely," 1958, arranged by Nelson Riddle and I would add "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning (1955, arranged by Nelson Riddle)" to those three, probably my favorites of his albums because they are so full of emotion and longing.) OUCH -- they grab my heart right down to its bottom!

  2. R.... 1....

One of Frank Sinatra's beautiful but depressing songs. Sad to listen to but beautiful as well.

    R.... 1....

If you like this one, I recommend another similar song "i Can't Believe I'm losing You" from the Softly As I Leave You album.

    R.... 1....

@catman916 Okay cool I'll check it out.

  3. C.... ....

Unbelievable rendition of heart break! With a smooth delivery! Class squared

  4. T.... ....

This is the best version by Frank. The Nelson Riddle version is a bit faster paced, simlar, but not as poignant and melancholy as this one. A true master at his craft. I would consider this a lost classic from FS.

  5. N.... S....

A moving masterpiece by the maestro of torch songs, it doesn't get any better than this.

  6. L.... g....

    İt's so nice

  7. M.... P....

There was a time, when I was young, that my friends and I made fun of their dad for listening to Sinatra. As I got older and could afford my own sound system, I explored all types of music. Much to my surprise, I found myself returning to Sinatra again and again. His impact on the American experience is hard to comprehend. Music- a legendary recording catalog containing countless classics. Film- High Society, Guys And Dolls (It doesn't get any better). Vegas. The Rat Pack...His influence on popular culture was unprecedented. He was bigger than anyone before or since. With so many recordings of so many quintessential classics it's near impossible to define any one recording as a favorite, but, this has to be near the top of my list of favorites. This is magic.

  8. J.... M....

This is SO magnificent. I have the CD. It’s all the more poignant, knowing about Ava leaving him. Nancy played it on Seriously Sinatra Christmas Eve Eve, and said “This was such a sad period in Dad’s life”. Thank you for posting. This is the greatest singer , other than Bocelli, who ever walked this earth. Frank, I met you personally, five times. You even used our car in Chicago for the Villa Scalabrini Orphanage Benefit, which you did for free. There never has been, and never will be, another singer like you. Thank you for the music, which lives on, and thank you for the memories.....

  9. s.... l....

I wish I heard this sooner.

  10. J.... ....

    What a poignant song.

    J.... ....

and performed as only Sinatra could do.

  11. C.... ....

It's nice to know there will always be cheating and lying women.... There is nothing new under the sun.

    C.... ....

@Jule66 nor will there be an excess of heartbreak and beautiful music in this world..

    C.... ....

I’m sorry but this is literally the most pathetic thing I’ve ever read. Even under this songs comment section. Hopefully you’re in a better, more open minded state of mind.

    C.... ....

THE ACT OF CHEATING IS NOT GENDER SPECIFIC! Both sexes can be guilty, women are just more discreet about it!

    C.... ....

@Sunlac Why preface your comment with "I'm sorry" -- that just a trending fad in today's lingo that will fade. You're not sorry or you wouldn't have gone on to say anything about it.
(Most of these comments are made by the very young, and those thumb icons are clicked on by kids playing around, we ignore them. There ARE negativistic people out there who comment that way just to be confrontational! Ignore them, to react just feeds their frenzy!

    C.... ....

M.J. Leger I’m actually sorry for anyone who has that mentality. Because it’s a terrible thing to think. And it doesn’t get anyone anywhere. Plus I didn’t feed into his frenzy. I called him pathetic. Also shove that lingo spiel up your ass because I genuinely meant that you backwards face ass hat. And don’t act like you’re anti villain or something. You’re just as pathetic as this other guy.

  12. M.... L....

I love this melodic but kind of sad song -- it's probably what Sinatra would have told the bull-fighter who took away Ava from him! I have it on the "No One Cares album.  Thanks for posting this so I don't have to pull it up on my own album!  Like always, his phrasing is so impeccable. (This is probably my favorite revenge song as I certainly relate to it!)

  13. B.... M....

    bellissimo brano! Benito mirabella-International-piano bar-

  14. C.... R....

Bob Dylan sang this song in concert yesterday at the Chateau Amphitheatre Washington State. He's recorded quite a number of "Sinatra" songs and other standards on his last two albums, but no recording has been released thus far of this one.

    C.... R....

Bob Dylan was a great song-writer, but his singing voice was terrible!

    C.... R....

Not on the recording. In my own mind the recorded version is as good as Sinatra's; not that Sinatra was technically a better singer - he was but Dylan, at least on the recorded version did the song as good a turn as Sinatra.

    C.... R....

Boy, do I agree! Bob Dylan is way out of his element singing these type of songs.

    C.... R....

Bob Dylan's talent lies in songwriting, NOT singing, his voice is terrible in every way, no breath control, no enunciation of words, bad phrasing, etc. He should just stick to song-writing.

    C.... R....

@Kakwirakeron R Montour Not possible! But everyone is entitled to their own opinion!

  15. R.... J....

FS's most heartbreaking track, because three days earlier he had slashed his wrists over
the break up of his corrosive marriage to Ava Gardner. According to James Kaplan who has written the definitive books on Frank, he would have bled to death if Jimmy Van Heusen hadn't decided to visit to pay a random visit. It is astonishing to think he managed
to record this sorrowful track, after such a truly terrible incident with such heartfelt beauty. .
It is no error that it finally appeared on the darkest collection of torch songs ever to be recorded, "No One Cares" known as The Suicide Album.

    R.... J....

    @catman916 Totally agree. Possibly the
most overlooked FS album of the Capitol
    period.

    R.... J....

There are many books about Sinatra, and a good many of them are fables, written to make money, and not based always on the truth.  And Frank himself called 3 albums the "Suicide albums."  I have all three plus one that should have been included but he recorded it later.

    R.... J....

It all depends on what you're looking for out of his voice "catman."    Personally, I prefer the older, more mature voice of Sinatra.

    R.... J....

catman916 --Thanks for the post of this lesser known song. I believe it was issued as a 45 as well, though. Whoa, those are tough, scalpel sharp lyrics.

    R.... J....

My daughter has always called them "slit
    your wrists" songs.

  16. C.... ....

    Who would thumb this down??

    C.... ....

Some jerk, but most of us pay no attention to those icons because kids and creeps play with them so those thumbs don't really mean anything!

    C.... ....

    M.J. Leger right!

    C.... ....

Only 200+ likes when some of today's junk is in the millions...crazy world we live in :)

    C.... ....

    Some dumb ass

    C.... ....

    Idiots!!!

  17. B.... L....

I called in to legendary Philadelphia DJ Sid Mark on his Friday with Frank show and told him this was one of my very favorite Sinatra recordings and he said  it was a favorite of his too. It is beautiful.

    B.... L....

That's a great story. It's good to know that my favorite Sinatra song was also one of his own favorites.

  18. M.... D....

Catman thanks for the post.Never again in the turning of the earth shall we experience it again.

  19. T.... ....

Hello again Catman 916! This song from Mr. Sinatra, "I Could Have Told You" is simply beautiful. I discovered it only about a week ago and immediately fell in love with it.
It is a haunting refrain! As usual Frank makes it sound as though he is talking about himself and by extension you and me. This quality of singing was part of his musical genius. Thanks for posting it. It is now at the top of my iPhone YouTube favorites list.

    T.... ....

What a wonderful discovery for you, Jeff. This is among his best and my favorite ballads.

    T.... ....

This track was recorded three days after he tried to commit suicide over the
failure of his marriage to Ava Gardner. The fact he pours so emotion into the
song makes it all the more heartbreaking. As beautiful as it is, I can't listen to
    it too often.

    T.... ....

I agree with you -- sad, but he does it so well, maybe too well!

  20. c.... ....

On further research, I discovered that it was released as a single on both 78 and 45 RPM.

    c.... ....

yes, with Don't worry bout me on the flip side. It started a comeback for Frank after a few false starts.

  21. B.... L....

Absolutely one of Frank's very best!

  22. o.... ....

A singer of this talent comes along once in a lifetime (if a lifetime is 500 years). We'll never be able to repay Frank for what he gave us.

  23. s.... ....

This is Sinatra at his best. His imitators could never duplicate the sound of his tone here. Also, one of my favorite songs, a Sinatra gem !

  24. r.... ....

    No one better...

  25. c.... ....

@mrshiggs1 Yes, it is a sad, beautiful ballad, superbly sung by Mr. Sinatra , one of my favorites.
