Sinatra, Frank - Everything Happens To Me Lyrics

Black cats creep across my path until I'm almost mad
I must have roused the Devil's wrath 'cause all my luck is bad
I make a date for golf and you can bet your life it rains
I try to give a party but the guy upstairs complains
I guess I'll go through life just catchin' colds and missin' trains
Everything happens to me

I never miss a thing, I've had the measles and the mumps
And every time I play an ace, my partner always trumps
I guess I'm just a fool who never looks before he jumps
Everything happens to me

At first my heart thought you could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick to end despair

But now I just can't fool this head that thinks for me
So I've mortgaged all my castles in the air

I've telegraphed and phoned, sent an Air Mail Special, too
You answer was "Goodbye", there was even postage due
I fell in love just once and then it had to be with you
Everything happens to me

I've never drawn a sweepstake or a bank night at a show
I thought perhaps this time I'd won but Lady Luck said "No"
And though it breaks my heart I'm not surprised to see you go
Everything happens to me

Everything happens to me

I’m pushing 60 and this feels like my story . However I am blessed compared to many. I have worked 37 years for the same employer. I only make 15$ an hour.
I’ve been divorced 3 times and I have been bankrupt twice.
My 25 year old son killed him self with fentanyl and heroin last December
I drive 35 miles each way to work , there’s a freeway closed almost daily because of a serious car accident
The fact is though if anyone I have known in my life that is gone,
They would give anything for one more day.
Jesus is my salvation, He is King of the Universe.
Even though I’m not worthy of Him
I believe in Him and He is my comfort through life

It's only my personal point of view, but I think Sinatra and Kennedy are the main idols (legends) of the American culture. Forever.

  21. F.... k....

    A nice song... Thanks Frank....!

  22. M.... L....

Thank you for posting this great song of Frank's, it's slow and sad, unlike his 1940 version with Tommy Dorsey , you can hear the pain he feels!  Probably his 1956 recording.

    M.... L....

This was recorded in 1981 with a Gordon Jenkins arrangement..

  23. E.... B....

whenever I am having problem after problem this is my song to turn to, perfect.

  24. D.... T....

Thanks for sharing Pal!!! the lirycs, the lirycs... thé expression...Eternal Frank!

  25. f.... g....

It seems to me that these are special lyrics written for the occasion by Sammy Cahn, just like he did for Teach Me Tonight in 1984. Well, Sammy did special lyrics for Frank over five decades and... these here are great! Comme d'habitude...

    f.... g....

Or was it Tom Adair, who wrote the original lyrics?

    f.... g....

    @David Reidenberg .. Yes

  26. s.... ....

Even a better reading of the lyrics, more emotion too than the more famous 1956 version....GREAT!!!

  27. R.... C....

It is definitely one of the best songs ever for me.

    R.... C....

    Good luck pal

  28. .... ....

Finally I am listening to sinatra's song. He is always my favorite

  29. j.... w....

Yoiu have to dig that long-held note @ 2:20, they say he learned that technique from Tommy Dorsey many years back, when he was singing in the band!Great song, and Frank make's it!!! Thanks for the posting!

    j.... w....

Correcto !

  30. M.... H....

My Dad wrote this song when he was 18 years old in 1936--he sold the rights for $200.

    M.... H....

+Madeline H  Really?  I thought it was written in 1940 when both composer and lyricist were working for Tommy Dorsey's band. Both men were in their 30s. Who was your father?  Dennis or Adair?

    M.... H....

    What was his name?

  31. D.... ....

Oceans of liquor, and I still can't forget her.

I was just dumped for the third time by the same woman. I completely agree

  32. D.... ....

Yeah, but Pal, I hope there's something at the bottom of a glass, because I can't seem to stop draining them to see...

  33. D.... ....

BTW Just finished watching "The Man with the Golden Arm" on channel 13 - wow.

  34. P.... M....

If you don't dig this, then you don't dig Sinatra at all. This is the 1981 Version left off of the She Shot Me Down album. I prefer the 1974 Version, with the same Gordon Jenkins arrangement. This is what real meaningful singing is all about. Bravo, Frank!

    P.... M....

+phoenix 78 Beautiful, Sinatra at his saddest & best!

  35. N.... ....

    Beautiful rendition.

  36. M.... L....

This is the version Nancy plays on Siriusly Sinatra.  I like this slow version the best of all his versions of this song.  He recorded it first with Tommy Dorsey in 1940, and again in 1956, '74 and '81.  I would bet this version is his 1956 version, about the time he was singing that type of song, like what he called "The Suicide Albums!"  (Where are You, No one cares, In the wee small hours, and Only the lonely.)  The lyrics are different from the 1940 version also, more melancholy -- sadder.

    M.... L....

The 1956 version was on the LP "Close to You", with Hollywood String Quartet, Nelson Riddle conducting. That version had the same lyrics as the Dorsey version, which was the first recording of this Tom Adair-Matt Dennis song. Dennis also wrote "Violets for Your Furs" and an almost-always Sinatra closer "Angel Eyes"...

  37. A.... S....

Love this version of the song.  Much more melancholy than the earlier, shorter version.  And his voice is perfect for it at this stage in his life.  "But pal you don't find rainbows in the bottom of a glass."  Great!

    A.... S....

Oh yes! Ole Blue Eyes is a favorite

    A.... S....

+Andrew Sokol Yes Andrew you nailed it - and, now I'm chasing rainbows with the losers from the class.
