Sinatra, Frank - Desafinado Lyrics

When I try to sing you say I'm off key
Why can't you see how much this hurts me
With your perfect beauty and your perfect pitch
You're a perfect terror
When I come around must you always put me down
If you say my singing is off key my love
You will hurt my feelings don't you see my love
I wish I had an ear like yours
A voice that would behave
But all I have is feelings and a voice gone deaf
You insist my music goes against the rules
But rules were never meant for lovesick fools
I wrote this little song for you but you don't care
Its a crooked song oh but all my love is there
The thing that you would see if you would play your part
Is even if I'm out of tune I have a gentle heart
I took your picture with my trusty Rollaflex
And now all I have developed is a complex
Possibly in vain I hope you weaken oh my love
And forget these rigid rules that undermine my dream of
A life of love and music with someone who'll understand
That even though I may be out of tune
When I attempt to say how much I love you
All that matters is the message that I bring
Which is my dear one I love you

This version is much closer to the original than the "love is like a never-ending melody" one.

Nice try Frank; you are certainly the best, although you should leave this one to Jobim or Gilberto... 😉

  21. M.... ....

The version in english has some really weird lyrics lol

  22. P.... D....

Does't make Sense version into english of the beautiful original lyric in portuguese by the Genius of Brazilian music of all times, the extraordinary talent of A C Jobim, a certain Mr Jobim.. God bless him in the Eternity

  23. C.... ....

    Are these the original lyrics?

  24. J.... R....

I think Sinatra re-writte too much the lyrics of the original song, good version but is much better the portuguese versión, if u dont believe me search in Youtube with english subtitles

  28. D.... Y....

No. FS is too good a singer for this song.

  29. A.... ....

Antonio Carlos Jobim and Frank Sinatra, this combination can't be beat.

  30. B.... L....

I'm in love, i'm in love with this man!!!

  31. J.... A....

  32. S.... ....

A voz do Sinatra é única. Que homem. A adaptacão não daria certo. Sinatra's voice is unique, i realised a translate wouldn't work to this song.

  33. B.... N....

    Dois GENIOOOOS

  34. A.... P....

Astrud is so much better .. this uncle is best heard at casinos at dawn ...

  35. F.... ....

Great version but G. Michael & Astrud Gilberto did better. Just Smoother in Portuguese .... 👌

    F.... ....

    Concordo. I agree.

  36. D.... M....

  37. J.... ....

Sinatra in command as usual,He does sound a little uncomfortable, especially with "little roleflex" moment. Frank's voice makes the song. Antonio is a gifted musican & songwriter,He chose well for a vocalist.

  38. F.... S....

How is it possible I haven't heard this Sinatra version before? I don't remember it being on either of their albums together.

    F.... S....

This was originally recorded for a second album that Sinatra had planned to do with Jobim. Three of the songs, including this one, and "Song of the Sabia", and "Bonita", were dropped from the album that was actually released, "Sinatra and Company" and replaced with some mediocre pop songs. I remember reading that this particular song was dropped because it sounded odd for two men to sing a love song together. I think Song of the Sabia and Bonita were dropped because they were art songs. Both are wonderful, among Sinatra's best performances, and can be found elsewhere on YouTube.

  39. E.... S....

    Sinatra;Jobim and Nelson Riddle¡¡

  40. A.... ....

I love how he went off key at certain times :)

  41. R.... L....

    amooooooooooooooooooooooo

  42. B.... K....

This is the greatest musical collaboration ever. Period.

    B.... K....

    Benny Koziol absolutely

  43. T.... G....

Weird sometimes Jobin sounds like Sinatra

  44. j.... ....

The last few lines starting at 2:40 "All that matters is the message that I bring..." sound overdubbed, and don't sound like Sinatra. Different room sound, voice quality, timbre and maybe even pronunciation.

    j.... ....

This is a DUET between Sinatra and Jobim. Jobim is singing that line.

  45. M.... L....

These Sinatra/Jobim songs are really superb -- Sinatra's perfect voice with the lyrics, guitar and voice of an emotional Brazilian, together, makes for their album, which sensual, is meaningful and just gorgeous!  Thank you for posting these great selections!

  46. m.... ....

I only listened once but Frank did sound out of tune on this.

  47. L.... C....

Sinatra, the voice perfect like a suit...

  48. A.... R....

  49. E.... F....

This is a really interesting recording. I think Sinatra took a lot of risk here, and is vulnerable. Sometimes he sounds like Frank, and sometimes he sound like Joao Gilberto. It's not for everyone, but I really like it. And, I'll listen to anybody sing with Claus Ogerman or Claire Fischer!

    E.... F....

I believe that Eumir Deodato arranged this. Ogerman did the arrangements for Sinatra's earlier album with Jobim.

    E.... F....

Sinatra had a very hard time singing the songs of jobim....often frustrated...he did deliver some great interpretations in the end..i think everyone would agree

    E.... F....

    Ogerman with Diana Krall too

  50. M.... M....

    Perfecta!

  51. J.... R....

Jeez 2 men singing to each other.

  52. R.... B....

    lay off this frank..

  53. j.... ....

    total sophistication

  54. M.... G....

Yep...you're right, but very few American people know portuguese enough to understand Vinicius song in Portuguese...and people from around the world can understand English and get a sense of the song with that beautiful Tom Jobim's music.

  55. P.... D....

  56. V.... P....

nice version.... lyrics are nice in english

  57. Y.... B....

    Lindo demais, emocionante.

  58. P.... C....

Frank sang these types of songs so very well. Very suiting to his voice

  59. M.... G....

Due to the translation to English, and performances with Sinatra and others, Bossa Nova was known in the whole world...so we've got to thank these English songs...and people that like the Portuguese original song it's because they can understand it. But to most people in the world, English is easier to listen.

    M.... G....

Chip Reid - you hit it right on the head! Obrigada. 👍

    M.... G....

Yes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, ("Tom"), a good friend of Sinatra's, certainly helped to bring that bossa nova beat sound, and we're grateful -- it's a beautiful sound.  Astrud Gilberto also helped with her songs in that genre.

    M.... G....

    I'm agree¡¡

    M.... G....

Marco Guzmán - sorry pal, you are right that it’s important to understand the songs text, but if you spoke both languages you might notice that the portuguese version is extremly poetic and it was writen by a giant of portuguese poetry. Translating poetry is very dificult, but this This particulat Transliteration or Translation is a very very poor and boring attempt when compared to the original.

  60. z.... l....

    too much!!!!!!!

  61. S.... A....

Thank you for posting this sweet true Bossa Nova tune with Frank and Tom. Cheers, Shari

  62. T.... V....

Great melody, but very hard to translate or make a version in English that does justice to the Portuguese original lyrics. It sounds so much better in Portuguese!!!!

    T.... V....

While both Frank and Jobim were before my generation, Frank Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim were expert musicians. I wish today's music lent itself to the same level of mastery as this collaboration.

    T.... V....

I think it's greatly developed, not exactly the same but wonderful in its own particular way.

    T.... V....

@Michella Michella No geral, ficou bom.

    T.... V....

Talita Vallejo, As a Brazilian, I can guarantee you are really right about translating this melody into English because it does not follow the originality of the Portuguese language of Brazil, but this English version of this melody (Desafinado) was very beautiful.

    T.... V....

    So true

  63. G.... L....

So beautiful... blue eyes, never out of tune... legítima bossa nova!

  68. e.... ....

Happy Birthday Frank!!! At 100 today you sound better than ever, certainly tons better than all the young guys today that call themselves singers. You are the best, your elegance and charm is missed, thank God that your music will live forever.

  70. J.... J....

    love it

  71. j.... e....

for the "VOICE" to sing off key just says how good he was

    j.... e....

The story of the lyrics in this song tell of woman who tells a man he is singing off key and he tells her "perfect pitch" is a terror!  He tells her he wrote the song to show his love for her although his tune may sound a "bit crooked," still, he has a gentle heart!  The words state "off key" but Sinatra is SINGING THE EXACT MINOR NOTES THE EXACT WAY JOBIM WROTE THEM!   Many times, certain parts of minor keys do not appeal to every ear and can sound or come across as a bit off key, BUT, -- you have to understand the music well and take it for how it was written and meant to sound like in it's key.  Also, there are 7ths and even 9ths in this key and that can sound a bit "off" to a non-musician.  I believe this was written in the key of D but Sinatra often transposed original keys to fit his voice, as most musicians do!  I routinely dropped a key several notes to fit my contralto voice, but I may have played it on the piano in a different key, or any key, but it still had the same 7ths and 9th chords.  That's what makes the song!

    j.... e....

that is beautiful! thanks for sharing this

Incredible rhythmic delivery by Sinatra from 2:09 ... He knows it and can't repress a small self-congratulatory quiver when he reaches the word 'music' at 2:26.

  79. A.... K....

This has 300k views and some Katy Perry s**t has 900 millions. I hate to be the person that keeps bringing up these comparisons on Youtube, but it's annoying me and I have to say it.

    A.... K....

+Ahmed -- the world is corrupt and deranged. You can never expect it to be perfect because the large mass of humanity (at least 87%) is ASLEEP -- in a deep state of darkness. People who grasp the good things will always be in the minority. Always. The ignorant, proud of their stupidity, will point the finger and yell "Elitist!" This world, bolstered by the perversions of capitalism, will make tons of money for the crass and the coarse. True artistry is the pauper.

    A.... K....

Almost half a million now, my friend -- people are catching on to these vocals with LASTING beauty, which will be listened to for years and years, very unlike the "KatyPerrys" and other of today's fad singers!  EVERYONE can relate at some time or another in their lives to this music and its beautiful lyrics!

    A.... K....

katy perry garbage compare to this

  96. S.... V....

for some reason this was cut from the original album in 1969...;-/

    S.... V....

Actually the whole album was shelved. 7 of the 10 tracks recorded for the second Jobim album in 1969 made it to the Sinatra & Company album in 1971. This one didn't make it on that album, if that's what you meant.
