Sinatra, Frank - A Cottage For Sale Lyrics

A little dream castle with every dream gone
Is lonely and silent, the shades are all drawn
And my heart is heavy as I gaze upon
A cottage for sale

The lawn we were proud of is waving in hay
A beautiful garden has withered away
Where you planted roses the weeds seem to say
A cottage for sale

From every single window I see your face
But when I reach a window there's empty space
The key's in the mailbox the same as before
But no one is waiting for me anymore
The end of our story is there on the door
A cottage for sale

These were the kind of song Frank Sinatra thrived on and could sing better than anyone.  He called himself "a saloon singer" and the ballads that suited that title are what he sang best.  Three albums, that he called "the suicide albums" were 3 of my favorites:  No One Cares, Only The Lonely, and "Where Are You" -- but I would add "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning" to those other three.  Some of his best work is in these albums.  He sang his very last song on Feb. 25, 1995, at the golf club in Palm Springs named for him, "The Best Is Yet To Come" and sang it quite well for an 80-year-old man, (his son led the orchestra) but it was his last song, he was starting to forget lyrics and, being a perfectionist, could not stand that so that was when he decided NOT to sing any more.  At the celebration in honor of his 80th birthday, he was brought up on the stage and sang a few bars of "New York, New York" to a rousing applause.  But he was smart, and knew when to hang it up for good.  (He died on May 14, 1998 at age 82. We sorely miss him, but are fortunate to have so many of his great recordings.

As I listened to this song, I couldn't help but wonder if the listener was to think (1) that a married couple were now separated or (2) that one spouse had died.  I decided to read a bit about the song and learned that lyricist Larry Conley (in 1929) had left the lyrics ambiguous, so that they could be meaningful to the widest possible audience.
