Simon & Garfunkel - The Sun Is Burning Lyrics

The sun is burning in the sky
Strands of clouds go slowly drifting by
In the park the lazy breeze
Are joining in the flowers, among the trees
And the sun burns in the sky

Now the sun is in the West
Little kids go home to take their rest
And the couples in the park
Are holdin' hands and waitin' for the dark
And the sun is in the West

Now the sun is sinking low
Children playin' know it's time to go
High above a spot appears
A little blossom blooms and then draws near
And the sun is sinking low

Now the sun has come to Earth
Shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death
Death comes in a blinding flash
Of hellish heat and leaves a smear of ash
And the sun has come to Earth

Now the sun has disappeared
All is darkness, anger, pain and fear
Twisted, sightless wrecks of men
Go groping on their knees and cry in pain
And the sun has disappeared

I remember my history teacher playing this song for us during our unit on the Cold War while showing slides of Hiroshima victims to drill into us to fight tooth and nail against another use of nuclear weapons against our fellow human beings. Thank you, Ms. Conway. The US has a lot to answer for but never forget that so many of us here will never, ever stop fighting for peace.

Moved.... God bless Ms Conway and others of her ilk including you....

We have weapons now that in one blow can utterly outdo all weapons ever used in all past wars, we have hundreds of these, all pointed at each other, for world peace.
We are a fucked up species.

For God's sake, get over it, you whiny chumps. It's the way of the world, now ain't it? Get used to it. Or some get some stronger weed.

Advocating for peace isn't socially acceptable anymore. Remember the last time things got that way?

  29. s.... ....

This song always makes me think of "Imagine." Both use lovely melodies and soothing tones while describing hell on earth.

    s.... ....

Imagine by John Lennon? That doesn’t describe hell on earth

    s.... ....

@Leo Flaherty Except that it does.

    s.... ....

Similar to another song of theirs, "A Most Peculiar Man."

  30. E.... M....

    Best song they ever wrote....

    E.... M....

It is a very good song but it was written by Ian Campbell

    E.... M....

    kathys song

  31. T.... M....

JESUS CHRIST THIS IS CREEPIER THAN "EVIL FOOD EATER CONCHITA" AND "HOTEL CALIFORNIA" TOGETHER!!! Those guys are using just a stupid acoustic guitar and yet they still managed to scare us to death!!! I know this was made at some time during the Cold War and such an images were just too real for people back then, but still, singing with a peaceful tones of guitar about Malevil-like situations?!

    T.... M....

its actually a folk song by ian campbell

  32. w.... ....

This went from 0 to 100 real quick

    w.... ....

Yes, the very end is profound. I remember the Cold War and the fear it instilled in my generation.

    w.... ....

    I think thats the point.

    w.... ....

    w.... ....

lmao imagine just being like "whoa what a nice sunset" then your like "wait"

    w.... ....

@Madam Pigeon yeah...and the child u held in your arms

  33. C.... ....

I first heard this in 1994 when I was 13, and I still love it. No idea why S&G didn't rate it afterwards. Okay, they're not all original compositions, but they are sang and arranged brilliantly. And Wednesday Morning 3 A.M is still one of my favourite songs.

  34. M.... I....

I was a Nuclear Weapons Specialist in the Air Force. This song speaks to me.

    M.... I....

mark miller Finally, people that know about Nuclear Weapons.

    M.... I....

I'm a human being who prefers an existence on earth opposed to the alternative. This song speaks to me.

@Tal D I've generally understood the song as a "point of view" from a civilian in the city. Everyone seems to interpret the Sun as the bomb - but I see no reason to think that. I think the Sun means the Sun. It's a normal day - the Sun is up, people are playing and walking etc...the Sun goes down, then in verse 3, it clearly says "high above a spot appears" - THAT'S the bomb. It starts small, a curiosity...then suddenly becomes big and comes fast, and it's all death.

How soon we've forgotten the warning words of this song. The threat is still there...Like so many things that we should truly fear, we ignore. We never learn. The talking heads talk, the polls go up and down, and in the stark light of day we have forgotten.
