Simon & Garfunkel - Homeward Bound Lyrics

I'm sitting in the railway station.
Got a ticket for my destination.
On a tour of one-night stands
my suitcase and guitar in hand.
And every stop is neatly planned
for a poet and a one-man band.

Homeward bound,
I wish I was homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting silently for me.

Every day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines.
And each town looks the same to me,
the movies and the factories
And every stranger's face I see
reminds me that I long to be,

Homeward bound,
I wish I was homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting silently for me.

Tonight I'll sing my songs again,
I'll play the game and pretend.
But all my words come back to me
in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me.

Homeward bound,
I wish I was homeward bound,
Home where my thought's escaping,
Home where my music's playing,
Home where my love lies waiting silently for me.
Silently for me.

All I can do now is fight for you-- We're the best team, enano. So we have to keep going forward..."

I remember watching a series of public service advertisements in Great Britain for the Friends of John McCarthy during the long years that they were trying to get him and others released from Lebanese terrorists.

FJM played the first part of the song on their advertisements when each of the hostages was released, but they only played the full version- and the very last verse- on the day he was released. Watching that last advertisement- hearing the very last verse play as he stood there at the open door of the aircraft and realizing what I was seeing- was one of the most moving moments of my life.

Homeward Bound was written at 'Widnes North' station (as it was known then on the Cheshire Lines 'Liverpool to Manchester Line'). There is debate that he wrote part of it at a Wigan station, but this is the one Simon credits. The Farnworth folk club, where he had been playing, was close by. So was my school (Wade Deacon Grammar) - right next door. Every time I missed the school bus, or was on yet another detention, I'd have to trudge across to the station for the train to Hunts Cross in Liverpool. On those dark winter nights it was so depressing, and every time I was there, that song was going around my head as I sat waiting. We knew the story at the time (late 60s/early 70s), so it was a buzz to be singing a song in my head, written in that very place, and fully empathising with how he felt. Bleak nights just wanting to go home! There's been a few plaques on the station wall there, but they keep getting nicked. Simon even appealed for their return at a gig in the Albert Hall. Also this: Simon’s friend Geoff Speed, who provided lodgings in Liverpool for the musician in September 1965, said: “It is probable he wrote one verse in Liverpool and the chorus in Wigan, with the song being finished in Widnes. We heard him writing the tune when he was staying at our house and then we dropped him at the station. He probably finished the song on the platform.”
