Simon & Garfunkel - He Was My Brother Lyrics
He was my brother
Five years older than I
He was my brother
Twenty-three years old the day he died
They cursed my brother to his face
“Go home, outsider
This town is gonna be your buryin' place
He was singin' on his knees
An angry mob trailed along
They shot my brother dead
Because he hated what was wrong
He was my brother
He, was my brother
And he died so his brothers could be free
He died so his brothers could be free

Simon & Garfunkel He Was My Brother Comments
This reminds me of my 23 year-old-brother who's in Syria right now.
Lost my father's brother today. I came to listen to this song and cry a little
Sounds like, where have all the flowers gone.
I happened to be listening to this song on my way to dad's hospital when mom called and told me he had passed away a few minutes ago. I would've loved to be present at dad's last moment but at least S&G's beautiful songs kept me through the rest of the long sad drive. Their music, especially "He Was My Brother," will forever remain special in my memory.

The saddest thing about this song is the genuine sentiment heard here. I mean, name a modern, corporate, politically correct ballad which has the same heart?
Sad song I cryed a couple times
This is golden. One of their best.
best song
So beautiful and emotive
Paul actually wrote this about a year before the kids were killed in Mississippi!
beatifull
If the lyrics were "Five years younger than I", this song would be really relatable for me. The first verse to be exact.
I'm sorry for your loss
Appolo my brother was 5 years older than me, he passed when he was 16 and i was 11
I knew this song was about a Freedom Rider, but it also really gets to me personally and not just from the true story of a martyr to human rights.
tragic song but lovely song too...
The song is about Andrew Goodman, who was killed earlier in 1964 in Mississippi; Simon and Garfunkel had been classmates with Goodman at Queens College.
Who should we make clean the toilets? white people?
or the dumb poop people?
The song was written about another friend of theirs, after the Goodman's death the lyrics were changed to "Mississippi's going to be your burying place" and it was rerecorded as such on the Paul Simon soundbook album
@Kodiak Express You, asshole.
“You reclaim your power by loving what you were once taught to hate.” Bryant H. McGill
This song was written as a tribute to the three freedom riders/civil rights workers who were killed in 1964. Two of them were from Queens, the previous residence of Simon and Garfunkel.
I am not saying it is! It surely applies to no end of people who have lost relatives in needless fighting, & the words are very emotive.
This is one of my favourites by them, a tribute to all our boys & girls out fighting for freedom
