Shins, The - Sleeping Lessons Lyrics
Go without 'til the need seeps in your love anymore
Collect your novel petals for the stem
And glow, glow, melt and flow
Eviscerate your fragile frame and spill it out on the ragged floor
And if the old guards still offend
They got nothing left on which you depend
So enlist every ounce of your bright blood
And off with their heads
Jump from the hook
You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise
See, those unrepenting buzzards want your life
As sure as you have eyes
They got no right
Just put yourself in my new shoes
And see that I do what I do
Because the old guards still offend (petty guards and shiny hands)
They got nothing left on which we depend
So enlist every ounce of your bright blood
And off with their heads
Jump from the hook
You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise, you despise, you despise, you despise, you despise

Shins, The Sleeping Lessons Comments
First time I heard this song I was 16 sitting with a couple cousins at a Christmas party in the basement passing around a joint with the only light coming from the Christmas lights tacked to the ceiling. Good times.

My castle brought me here
This album made highschool easier to handle ngl... When you hear a great album, you want to listen and appreciate the quality of music.
Been altenating between Cage the Elephant, Buillt to Spill, Granndaddy, Beach House, and The Shins. Taking a break from that reading Bulfinch's Age of Fable mythology, such clarity these last few days.
Sound for sore ears.
My mantra as an artist, since I was 16.
Off with their heads
Lets not underestimated folks, the shins were pioneers.
I screamed when I saw clay and Justin have this poster in their room (13rw) I got so many happy memories when i first listened to this and now I’m sad
Omg there is so much more views
makes my ears go "aaa"
I still have a hard time believing this song is real. It's like finding a magical fairy or some shit. Makes my lifetime every time I hear it.
1000 different versions of yourself...Dopple gangers!
this song gives me a sudden urge to just break down into tears
Who's here from Drew Gooden?
This song saved my life. Gave me a view outside of the box.

Things sure were different when I heard this for the first time.
I am one major step closer to THIS! Here I go!
Isn't it crazy how hearing one song can bring back of flood of memories and emotions from your youth? Im not even that old but hearing this song makes me feel both like a fifteen year old kid and the 27 year old woman that I am at the same time.
Highschool feels ❤❤
McKenzie, if you're reading this, I love you.
Love u 2
Step 1: close your eyes
Step 2: try to forget
Step 3: dont forget
Step 4: sleep
And they got no right
As sure as you have eyes
They got no Right
Damn, this saved my day.
2011-2019 still love this song❤❤❤
0.75x speed
There's an algathym that makes it work, pulling out dangerous agreements doesn't. Adults have to gather the room
A miss step???
I've been listening to the shins for a few years now and they still amaze me even coming back to their older songs. It's my freshman year of highschool and I've been through a lot already, but the shins have helped me get through a lot.
One of the best albums in human history.
Winter is coming, February, or April
I feel like the only reason I'm here or even know who they are is because of my absolutely absurd daily drug intake
Not quite true, my man. I don't do drugs and goddamn, they're a freakin charm for me, too ❤️
thank you shins, for the music.
Only identified madness can be cured!
Saw them open their set at LeedsFest with this one about 10 years ago. Excellent
When I was little this song always reminded me of Alice in wonderland for some reason
*lps doodle * off with your headsssss
Migrants, immigrants, history that should be taught in schools. Of why they strive be in the country s , who's polices created there environment. Weather it be cold war dictators, to a consumption of drugs of that same society. Americas foreign policy has created a hatred that's not going away. The next generation has to understand why there s such disdain for the colonial past. And there lives living up with it. Read history, understand now
A song that helped me inhale
You sick self forfilling prophecy. You are pretty sick!

I like music that makes me feel like the main character in a coming of age movie
did i hear some passion pit like vibes

The first time you hear a song you love but haven't heard for years, truly priceless.
This song give me IBS... But in a good way.

The beginning reminds me of a Sleeping at Last song
Imagine the band clicking on this video and reading so many genuine comments from all these different people about how their music makes them feel something else. They are truly extraordinary.

You’re gonna go off to college soon… and you’re gonna start listening to bands like Godspeed, You Black Emperor! and the Shins… and then you’ll dye your hair black and become a lesbian…
The picture made me throw up a lil bit, but the tune is exquisite.
2:26 tho
I remember hearing this my freshman year of college. I bought the album from Target. Years later I am still listening to it, here and there.

After 6 months of BMT then tech school, I finally returned to my hometown to see my family and friends. On the last night I spent with my friends before leaving for my first base, they drove me back to my parents apartment and we were going over old memories and talking about the future...and this song was playing in the background. I was kinda blown away knowing it’d be years before I’d get to see them again and how we’ve grown up so fast and the only way I can honestly describe how that feels is this song.
What the Oracle tells you is for you, and you alone.
Go without,
'Till the need seeps in,
You low animal,
Collect your novel petals for the stem,
And glow,
Glow,
Melt and flow,
Evascerate your fragile frame,
And spill it out on the ragged floor,
A thousand different versions of yourself,
And if the old guards still offend,
They got nothing left on which you depend,
So enlist every ounce,
Of your bright blood,
And off with their heads,
Jump from the hook,
You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise,
See, those unrepenting buzzards want your life,
And they got no right,
As sure as you have eyes,
They got no right,
Just put yourself in my new shoes,
And see that I do what I do,
Because the old guard still offend,
(Their pudgy hearts and slimy hands)
they got nothing left on which we depend,
So enlist every ounce,
Of your bright blood,
And off with their heads,
Jump from the hook,
And you're not obliged,
To swallow anything you despise.
thank you so much for this
They better have explained this.
As a young adult, I now understand why my Dad played this album ALL the time and during EVERY long car ride.
Wow just discovered this 😌 beautiful. This song takes me places
Sophomore year. Getting high in the back of my best friend's car late at night.
