Shins, The - Red Rabbits Lyrics
Hurled to the center of the Earth again
The place where it's hot, love
You know, it hurts to breathe in
And the watershed you balance on is begging it
Well did he ever know
The trees in the moonshine are a dark lattice
So you catalog every angle you notice
In a vacuum you are charged to record this
So you won't make it easy on me
And I can't go into this no more
It puts too many thorns on my mind
And the necessary balloon lies a corpse on the floor
We've pissed on far too many sprites
Born on a desert floor, you've the deepest thirst
And you came to my sweet shore to indulge it
With the warm and dreaming eyes of an orphan
But there is not enough
There is not enough
Out of a gunnysack for red rabbits
Into the crucible to be rendered an emulsion
And we can't allow a chance they'd restore themselves
So we can't make it easy on you
Undaunted, you bathe in hollow cries
The boys with swollen, sun-burnt eyes
A reward for letting nothing under their skin
So help me, I don't know, I might
Just give the old dark side a try
Don't cast your whirling eyes on the shore
'Til we even the score
I still owe you for the hole in the floor
And the ghost in the hall
Who decides who paddles over the falls?
Yeah, who makes the call
Who makes the call?
Well, I know there's an eventual
Release from every scale of crime
But the necessary balloon lies a corpse on the floor
We've pissed on far too many good intentions held by clever sprites
And they're all standing up for their rights

Great music. I hear a little bit of the zombies.
This is definitely one of my favorite songs from the Shins! I love it!

this is the first time i listened to a song and decided that i liked it, and found the album from the shared mediacenter from where my mom had randomly played it, and got a lil chunky mp3 player to listen to it in recess. these sounds were so enchanting to little kiddo me. good times. i really treasured it, and i've never not liked it since
Will he ever know
Shins shine on through the years!
Great song!!
red rabbits show up at 1:52, you’re welcome
I'm a rock guy and metalhead, and goddammit I love these guys.

i love the shins, but i try not to listen to the lyrics, for fear of being disturbed. it takes me to another word
Darn - now I'll have this melody stuck in my head for . . . the next 5 years . . .
4 years to go...
The song is obviously about the end of a relationship. Yes, there are specifics referred to, "inside jokes" or references that might have been the pivot of a lover's quarrel. But these specifics are not the reason the relationship ended. Instead, it was the shortcomings and emotional inadequacies of each person that impelled them to get involved with one another ("Born on a desert floor, you've the deepest thirst/And you came to my sweet shore to indulge it...") but too much damage has been done ("pissed on far too many sprites") to rescue the relationship.
Heard an interview with Mercer about the meaning of this song. People are not far off with the classic "breakup" but it's a bit deeper than that. It's about a boy who studies as a pupil under a master. They "catalogue every angle you notice" but the master begins to lead him astray towards a "dark side." He begins indoctrinating radical principles and the many "came to my sweet shore to indulge it" such as the "boys with swollen sunburnt eyes" but the boy isn't having it. The boy breaks from his master and the resulting fissure between the two causes drama and problems. "Who decides to paddle over the falls?" I imagine the red rabbits are fake attempts by the master to win back or beat down the boy as he learns on his own. "And into the crucible to rendered an emulsion." But the boy knows these are feeble attempts to destroy his progress "they can't allow a chance to restore themselves, no they won't make it easy on you."
Pretty cool. Can't believe I've listened to this song for 10 years and never really knew what was going on.
mind fuck
Oh my God I appreciate this more than you know! I've also listened to this for years pondering over the lyrics.
Ach! Dieses Lied hat einfach angenehme, schöne Kraft, sich beim Hören ganz viel auszumalen!
I heard it on the radio then could never get it out of my mind. I like to listen to it REALLY LOUD. Very strange, but ingenious!
Why do I always get a earthbound feeling from these guys. Or is it just alice in wonderland?
Anyone else feel like this song takes them to a completely different world
Although all shins songs do that really ahha
+Devin Kalleo hell yeah
One Year Stand I used to play a space exploring game whenever I listened to the Shins. It's twice the effect now! :D
straight to the womb
Yrmes omg I felt that for real
i'm listening for the 57th time. can't get over how perfect this song is. smart fuckers if you ask me. a bunch of isaac newtons with instruments.
This song is so nostalgic for me ✨❤️💕
Awesome song. Listening to it before bed is great.
This song is like abstract music-the artist means something specific by it, but you might not take it that way and that's okay.
these lyrics are like something from Bad Lip Reading lol but I do really enjoy this song
Damn this song is good. I love it.
Love this song so much
Nice song :)))
Flyy red rabbits !
For some reason I keep picturing Finn from Adventure Time singing this song... O.o
wow thanks now thats all i can imagine
+Ferris Romero YAY...i love Fin n
You say this and now I'm crying.
Hahaha, now you screwed up my interpretation of this song!
omg lololol
they used a tune from this song in a tune from the port of morrow album but I can not for the life of me figure out what it is!!! Can anybody help me!?
@toripai94 maybe september?
toripai94 its the song "september" that you are referring to that has the same elements of guitar solo in the break of the song except I think in september its just a slide guitar instead of steel that and red rabbits its just all around a better song in my opinion. This song is Gold.
ridiculously good lyrics
This song has to be about convincing a girl who has never smoked bud or at least not in awhile and watching her unfold into a fantasy world lol what else is a crucible but a pipe and red rabbits are lil red buds lmao thats what i think
I think you're just high lol
+Jahova Jackson Seems legit.
Bryce Krispie trewcwnt
rootin lmao nah
And it closes with steel guitar...perfect! What a beautiful song.
These lyrics are just crazy....how does Mercer come up with this stuff
Cocaine and lots of drugs.
Kenny Ludlow lots of experiences from life and maybe a little bit of melancholy thrown into the mix
I have this album on my iPod and I cannot stop listening to it lol
Best flipping song to draw to
cooooooooooozy zzang

I find it Amusing that this song got nine times more views than Pam Berry ^_^
What in the hell is this song about? I don't understand it at all, but the words are lovely and the performance and melody is haunting.
