Every time I hear this I think of my friends dad who just passed away last March. It hurts, seeing someone you care about loose so much. My last talk with her father, I'll never forget. God, I hope you gave that man his wings.

Shinedown is so underrated...they deserve more.

I think he had schizophrenia, and the world didn't understand him. It is difficult for people to understand the struggles that accompany mental illness. I can relate to this song every time I play it, the cigarettes are for stress and the whiskey to drown the negative voices in his head. The man who wrote the song must have seen past the bullshit which is rare, and gave him a chance. While the rest of the world believed he had a lack of effort. Its these quick judgements made by uneducated people who have never been there so they cannot relate, instead of showing mercy they believe you are faking it for attention and take it upon themselves to punish the man for it. They are relentless and the strongest person in the world couldn't handle that kind of abuse all day in and out for a lifetime, its absolute torture. Worst part is the man still feels sympathy for the world, they may see him as a small man who gave up when in his reality he knows is the strongest person on the planet every day he wakes up and tries again and again. Hoping one day he will wake up and it was nothing more than a bad dream. One out of 100 people will get schizophrenia in their lifetime, many people dont even know they have it. Living dysfunctional lives and believing they are the rejects of society. We are socially awkward and are stuck in a glitch in the human mind. Wanting to be like the rest of the world so bad and frustrated with ourselves for not being able to do today what seems so simple and easy for everybody else. Ashamed of ourselves because the world tells us we should be better and try harder and we believe we are the problem.

Sound of Madness was, is, and will always be one of the best hard rock albums of the 2000's. Brent Smith has an equally amazing voice and range. Though I don't know him, I'm proud to know he's in my age range. Talent well worth the recognition he gets.

A girl broke up with me about 4 years ago and this song always reminds me of the pain, not that she left me, that she got with someone else 2 weeks later, I listened to this constantly, when I was on the bus, train, when i was gaming, Even in the pub when I put it on, used to make me cry. Now I look back on those times with happiness when I hear this, because it gave me comfort, and now even though life is getting in the way of being easy, this makes me smile. It gets easier. Kepp going, stay strong you beasts.

Don't get me wrong, I like Monsters. But Second Chance is one of the greatest songs anyone ever wrote. When Brent sings "Tell my mother tell my father...." man that's an emotional experience you just don't get very often in a lifetime.

Gosh, never ceases to amaze me how talented of a vocalist Brent is. This song has always been one of my favorites for some reason, and I’m not entirely sure why. I’ve never personally struggled with depression or suicidal thoughts. But this song has just always been a favorite of mine. I love their new stuff, don’t get me wrong, Special is my personal favorite from Attention Attention but I really do miss the pre-amaryllis Shinedown. I mean Amaryllis, Threat to Survival, and Attention Attention have all been super awesome records for sure. But Leave a Whisper-Sound of Madness were just completely awesome and will always be some of my favorite albums by any band ever.
