Shawn Colvin - Get Out Of This House Lyrics

Go jump in the lake, go ride up the hill
Get out of this house
It's a house of your making, it's a house of ill will
Get out of this house

Go listen to Buddha, go listen to Joe
Get out of this house
If anyone asks, you tell them you don't know
Get out of this house

I spent 11 long years in a hothouse zone
I spent 29 more trying to get home
Well, I never got home, but I did what I did
And I got myself this house, and you can't come in, oh

Yeah
Get out of this house
Get out of this house

I'm the queen of my castle, I'm the king of my room
Get out, get out of this house
I got more than I need, more than I ever could use
Get out, get out of this house

I spent 17 years trying to save my soul
I spent 23 more down in the hole
Now my soul is all right, but I might get found out
And I got myself this house now, and I can't get ou-out

Get out of this house
Get out of this house

If I see you again, it will be in my head at the end of a cloud
If you see me again, it will be in your head telling you to get out

You act like a baby, you talk like a fool
Get out of this house
Go back to your mama, go back to high school
Get out of this house

Go jump in the lake, go jump out the door
Get out, get out of this house
I've had all I can stand, and I can't stand no more
Get out, get out of this house
Get out of this house

Shawn Colvin Get Out Of This House Comments
  1. J.... B....

The first time I heard "Get Out of This House" was in the summer of 1998. I was watching VH1 and Shawn played a concert for an audience of mostly children. I remember seeing the preview and seeing a clip of her playing the harmonica on this song. On the original track, producer John Leventhal played harmonica. Before singing "Get Out of This House," Shawn was saying how John usually played the harmonica in her band. She invited several kids up on stage who played harmonica. Each one got a quick turn before she performed this song. It has stuck with me ever since, just as her signature song, "Sunny Came Home," had done months earlier. I had a friend and neighbor, who is a musician, who had the "A Few Small Repairs" album. I remember being at his house one afternoon in the fall of 1998 and seeing the track listing. While I didn't listen to the album, I correctly guessed the song with the harmonica was "Get Out of This House." It wasn't until a few years ago that I discovered that I was right. I love this and "Sunny Came Home." Shawn received a Grammy nod for "Get Out of This House," but lost to Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart." "Sunny Came Home" won Song of the Year and Record of the Year the following year, at the 40th Grammy Awards.

  12. S.... B....

Why are the best songs so underplayed? This is such a good one, love it

  13. r.... c....

Miss those times. We need singers like shawn colvin to make a comeback. What an uplifting song . Good times 😃😁😀

  14. A.... ....

Go eat you some gouda. Go drink you some joe. Get in to my blouse.

  15. A.... ....

But where I'm I gonna go?

  16. P.... D....

I saw Shawn solo in London in July 2018. She's lost nothing -a great performer. There's an arrogance about this track, it's feels that good!.... For guitarists try tuning EADGAE, key of A minor, with a G harp.

  17. B.... A....

Is this song in any way related to Sunny Came Home?

  18. L.... L....

    Today's tune for me.

  19. H.... R....

gosh she sounds sooooo much like Sheryl crow here.. that said.. what an awesome track from "a few small repairs"

  22. J.... ....

    I've always loved her voice

  23. n.... ....

Great stuff....If this isn't influenced by the late great Tom Petty...... just brilliant. :-)

  24. D.... W....

This song got a lot of airplay in Singapore when I moved there in 1996.

  25. F.... B....

    Great tune, stupid looking video.

  26. T.... S....

Many, but a memorable song from Colvin. It's crazy but so meaningful. I miss that time, not so long ago when there were so many great female singer songwriters, with Colvin heading the charts.

  27. B.... B....

    My new anthem.

  28. D.... ....

Get out of this White House

    D.... ....

    Dartanianswordsman Hillary did...problem?

  29. K.... G....

  30. M.... C....

    Me to Theresa May...

  31. D.... ....

    Yeah Donald Trump...get out!

  32. e.... ....

I really like this song and have it on my 'walking' ipod playlist, but unfortunately nowadays the line "You act like a baby, you talk like a fool, get out of this house" always makes me start thinking of one big white house and one man I would rather not think about on my morning walk. :-(

    e.... ....

    hey I like trump

    e.... ....

    expatlar go empty Hillary’s shitbag

  33. t.... ....

John is such a genius. John Leventhal to me is one of the most brilliant musical minds of our time.

  34. P.... ....

Going thru some big life changes right now, deciding to move out of a bad town. Will miss a few people but... gotta do what's best for yourself. Seems the perfect song right at this point in my life mid 20s

  35. D.... P....

I first heard this song in 1998 when I was cleaning tables at a fast food restaurant late in the evening after a rainstorm that left the air smelling like moisture, the blacktop outside all wet with the parking lot mercury vapor lights reflecting off the water and the storm clouds all pinkish/red from the setting sun.

The song was emanating from the speakers embedded in the ceiling but they were so muffled I only heard part of the lyrics and remembered the harmonica riff.

Today I finally found the song on YouTube after skimming through hundreds of videos and found this one. A 19 year long earworm has been solved.

    D.... P....

D P Same. I heard “sunny came home” from an album back in 1999. I recently found what it was called. It bothered me for years.

    D.... P....

    Lol(earworm) ..AWESOME! Great story.

    D.... P....

    That's a dedicated search ... Persistence

    D.... P....

Yep, back in 2019 for this!

    D.... P....

Congrats! Last week I finally (5 yrs! searching) found BIRMINGHAM by Amanda Marshall...both great women singers!

  36. P.... C....

    This is a great song.

  37. U.... S....

    Love this song.

  38. D.... M....

Who is she pissed off at, anyway? Ex-husband?

  39. J.... C....

Nice song. Never heard of it before.

  40. D.... ....

It has a "Neil Young" flavor to it....very nice.

    D.... ....

    The harmonica solos definitely do!

    D.... ....

That was what I thought when I first heard this song. Even the way she moves around in the video as she plays her guitar is very Neil Youngesque

  41. R.... D....

My theme song from here & on out

  42. j.... r....

    wonderful song..............terrific

    j.... r....

I am the only one at the car wash and listening while I wait.

He will get a $10 tip but he doesn't know it yet. :) I get slow days.

  43. T.... K....

I tried to zoom in few times but is she playing a Guild Electric?

    T.... K....

Yes, looks like a late 50's or early 60's Guild Bluebird.

    T.... K....

@Johngonefishin That must be a rare one..This is now 20 plus. yr. old song. Cool axe though

  44. T.... C....

Feel The Bern > & light the sky and hold on tight, the world is burning down ....

  45. D.... F....

go listen to Buddha, go listen to Joe

  46. L.... R....

My beautiful house is a far away memory 21 years of fun & heartbreak

  47. L.... R....

I did . Left it all behind

  48. J.... S....

    OUTTA THIS HOUSE!
    OUTTA THIS HOUSE!
spirits be gone from this house...

  49. R.... S....

    I relate.

  50. r.... ....

The 1990's: best decade ever for pretty much all genres of music.

    r.... ....

    me too derek, me too

    r.... ....

Speaking of the 1960's, check out the genius who has influenced scores of artists including Shawn, the Bronx singer/songwriter Laura Nyro. On 19th April 2017 The Guardian online featured an article on Nyro in commemoration of the 20 years since her passing on 8th April 1997. Nyro was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2012 by a weeping Bette Midler. Many regard her as America's greatest songwriter. She is considered an artists artist, and probably the most influential female musician of the last 50 years. Joni Mitchell described Nyro as 'holy wine in the bloodstream'.

    r.... ....

    Love Laura.....LOVE her.

    r.... ....

rbryant100 You know, I can't really argue with you on that.

    r.... ....

Amen! But on a serious note, I don't think the 90s is THE only great decade for music. I do, however, believe that the 90s were the LAST great decade for music in general. As a 90s kid myself, I do admit there have been great eras of music in the past as well such as the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s.. well, basically any era up to the 90s is great era hehe. 90s was the last era where singers really sing and don't have to depend too much on autotunes and all kinds of gimmick to polish their music/performance.

Even my mother, a very wise woman in her 60s, who was born in 1959 (so she's basically a 60s-70s kid) also admitted that the 90s was the last era/decade where she can still enjoy the music. From 2000s and onward, it has been nothing but downhill. As my mother often says, todays (general pop) music has lost its "soul" and "essence". I can't help myself but to agree with her statement.

  51. R.... ....

This song came out when I was deciding to end my marriage. It was perfect. I felt like she was speaking to me in the opening lyrics, telling ME to get out of my house.

    R.... ....

me too real poodle, me too

    R.... ....

Crying. Because it was the same meaning for me and the end of my marriage

    R.... ....

my soul is my house, and nobody can invade or hurt it

  52. U.... W....

Another great song from the 90's.

  53. S.... A....

So , if I have this correct, She got herself a house and she can't get out, and I can't come in. .But she wants me to get out. Bad lyrics, Shawn. Stick to thee harmonica.

    S.... A....

Go back to listening to Donna Lewis, you fruit

    S.... A....

@Ali Ali The house is a metaphor.

    S.... A....

@John6yt I'm joking. Duh. I love this album.

    S.... A....

@bertrandhustle I'm joking. I love this album. I want to see how many people take me seriously. :)

    S.... A....

hey, her first album is great. it has kevin killen, and anything with kevin killen is great. :)

  54. R.... O....

Nothing exemplifies this woman's determination to get shed of this jerk than that harmonica, especially when it makes its return towards the end.

    R.... O....

+Ross Odom i feel the exact same way.

    R.... O....

yeah, but its being actually played by a man, for real :) (john leventhal, the producer, you see him on the electric in this video)

  55. A.... ....

    sheryl crow is that you?

    A.... ....

    Alison kraus shawn colvin

  56. O.... A....

    Still great. Classic.

  57. b.... ....

There was an episode of the Garry Shandling show where she performed this solo and it was the first time I heard it.
Absolutely beautiful and I've been trying to find it ever since

  58. J.... E....

Reminds me a lot of Lucinda Williams and Lucy Kaplanski or Lynn Miles all rolled up in one. Love her voice.

    J.... E....

She's more than the sum of any of those parts!

  59. p.... e....

Shawn is awesome and this song is wonderful
Sounds as good now as it find back when it came out
If she told me get out, I surely would

    p.... e....

I'd get out too. She might burn it down if you don't. ;)

  60. p.... e....

This is a simply great song
Shawn is awesome and this sounds as fresh as it did when it came out
    She's a national treasure
Brilliant song-writer and such a gorgeous voice
If she told me to get out, I surely would

  61. k.... P....

    Feisty Song. Love it

  62. c.... ....

Robin Wright on House of Cards looks like Shawn Colvin alittle doesn't she?

  63. D.... H....

If anyone asks tell them you don't know, get out of this house.

  64. A.... L....

    She's brilliant yeap

  65. T.... L....

    Brilliant music.

  66. R.... G....

Virgin radio in the UK plugged this song at the time- i was hooked on it straight away-great vid, great singer!

    R.... G....

Aw, I miss Virgin Radio, they were really great that time

  67. J.... B....

Great Song. She played this on 'Larry Sanders'.

  68. C.... I....

do you love a person who does it though?

  69. j.... ....

This song is badass!!! Reminds me of Tom Petty's "Jammin Me".

  70. A.... S....

    inspired by Bob Dylan

    A.... S....

    Harmonica? Most definitely!

  71. E.... G....

Yeah... you're like me. Have to have the CD and the sound quality.

I'm sure you can find that album in a used CD joint

  72. t.... ....

Yes, I did that. But, if it ever gets deleted, I can always have the CD handy to copy it again.

  73. E.... G....

You know you can just copy it to your hard drive right?

  74. k.... ....

If you've ever seen her live, you'd know she totally rocks on stage.

  75. T.... A....

I always think of my family when I hear this song. They told me my future wife was not good enough for me a week before I got married. We've now been happilly married for 20 years .... with 2 great kids.... a beautifull house ..... and my family.... they can't come in !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. g.... ....

I love that "mid-South" twang in Shawn's music. You can tell Carbondale left a permanent mark on her.

  77. A.... A....

She sounds like Sheryl Crow in this song.

  78. D.... R....

Stellar ! I can't believe I only discovered her now, Better late than never.

  79. S.... J....

    Ace vid. Awesome Shawn.

  80. a.... ....

Oh this song just pulls me back to late 90s :)

  81. .... ....

get out, get out of this place

  82. R.... R....

Truth ! She is the bomb. Once hooked you will never let go. She is so good that you will always look for more of her music.

  83. R.... H....

Actually this is folk, not country music. And you may be coming in late to the party, her first record was back in 1989, but it is never too late to become a fan. Go check out her website. shawncolvin , com.

    R.... H....

Shawn was 40 years old when this video first came out.

  84. R.... H....

And yet you still came to this page and listened to the song. After looking through your profile and the utter trash you listen to I can see why you would not appreciate a song like this. Shawn has more songwriting and performing talent in her discarded TOE NAILS than every band you listen to combined.

  85. A.... ....

LOL people actually like this song? I picture 100 single middle-aged women at a concert rocking out like "Yea, get out!" Such a silly image. Terrible song. :(

    A.... ....

    Arlo Agreed lmao

  86. C.... M....

i've re discovered her. what a find!

  87. b.... ....

Wow...I forgot how much I liked her music! I saw her live back in the 90's...truly singing 'bout what life experiences are about. Rock on Shawn!

  88. c.... ....

@chalkman4 Thanks, I never would have known.

  89. c.... ....

Heard this song at Lowes a few days ago while getting some stuff and immediately stopped to listen. Great song.

  90. c.... ....

@cookieman38111 Thats Vasquez Rocks in California near the 14 freeway. Been there many times myself.

  91. W.... M....

I'm sure the version of this video I'd seen before was edited differently...?

    W.... M....

There may have been a censored version, I cannot confirm or deny...

  92. c.... ....

Yo, that commercial has to go!!!

  93. c.... ....

    Where was this filmed???

    c.... ....

cookieman38111 I would love to know as well.. so amazing!

  94. S.... G....

    I miss the 90's:(

  95. s.... ....

Shawn, thank you for being such an amazing songwriter and continuing to make great music! :)

  96. m.... ....

@IvoniceAstrid May I suggest ''Sunny came Home''? It's a simple little ditty with cool self-empowering lyrics!

    Cheers, eh!

  97. I.... P....

i feel a bit dim now, today is the first time i've heared of Shawn Colvin ( mind you i am in England and country music isn't exactly in abundance on the air waves... so not completely my fault ;-p ... i love this song, i love her playing... it's got a touch of Neil Young .. and great lyrics ... brilliant :-)

  98. r.... ....

@crackerman3772 It goes out of this house.

  99. c.... ....

Damn' 15 years ago! 1996! Where does time go?

  100. l.... ....

The entire album was awesome. Thanks for the post.
