Sergio Mendes - Waters Of March (Aguas De Marco) Lyrics
A stick, a stone
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass
It is night, it is death
It's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms
A fox in the brush
The knot in the wood
The song of a thrush
The wood of the wind
A cliff, a fall
A scratch, a lump
It is nothing at all
It's the end of the slope
It's a beam it's a void
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground
The flesh and the bone
The beat of the road
A slingshot stone
A fish, a flash
A silvery glow
A fight, a bet
The range of a bow
The bed of the well
The end of the line
The dismay in the face
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike
A point, a nail
A drip, a drop
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks
In the soft morning light
The shot of a gun
In the dead of the night
A mile, a must
A thrust, a bump
It's a girl, it's a rhyme
It's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house
The body in bed
And the car that got stuck
It's the mud, it's the mud
A float, a drift
A flight, a wing
A hawk, a quail
The promise of spring
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
A snake, a stick
It is John, it is Joe
It's a thorn in your hand
And a cut in your toe
A point, a grain
A bee, a bite
A blink, a buzzard,
A sudden stroke of night
A pass in the mountains
A horse and a mule
In the distance the shelves
Rode three shadows of blue
And the river talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
In your heart, in your heart
A stick, a stone
The end of the load
The rest of a stump
A lonesome road
A sliver of glass
A life, the sun
A knight, a death,
The end of the run
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of all strain
It's the joy in your heart

Bono paid tribute to this on the last Joshua Tree tour, during "BAD".
👍👍👍😍
Brazil lost this musicality. unfortunately
Extremely happy that he played this at his concert at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 5 May - I was in my element - my favourite and the "joy in my heart".
I'd be honored if some WATERS OF MARCH fans would take a listen to my acoustic interpretation of the song (keyboard & vocal, English lyrics) on my YT channel in tribute to the writing of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
My favorite version. Makes me feel like I'm walking down a beautiful villa.
Ahhh!!! Real music 👌💯

This cover of 'Waters of March', is the the first that I've listened to. So, that all the wonderfully gifted musicians who followed to cover this song; I was obligated to listen. Because, Sergio Mendes...
I could'nt just listen to this beautiful music and I had to let out on how I remember this song, it was my brother's favorite band Brasil 77, when there's a new album out in the market, he would surely buy it, in my chidhood days we would cover our ears so that won't hear the music blaring in our house, God, how I wish I go back in time listening to it together with my brother, he's gone now and reminiscing is the only thing keeps his memories alive in me.

Amazing song ....like an eternally revolving Escher staircase ....genius !
My Mother is Cuban American and loved Cuban and Bazilian artist... As child, my Mother would play Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. Also, Carlos Jobim, Willy Chirino, Ibrahim Ferrer, Vinicius de Moraes, Joao Gilberto, Celia Cruz; to name a few. Some were censored and some where not... Sweet, Wonderful, Gorgeous Music... Yes, I like old, corney stuff... Love it!!!!
I,m loving it Just put you in that mood to relax with a martini

Isso! How is this the first time I've ever heard this rendition? Where have I been? The song is amazing (anything by Jobim is incredible... gosto bastante da bossa nova!), but this version speaks to me. The arrangement and orchestration kick ass! Muito obrigado!
이곡은 질리지가않아~
마음이 평온해진다 ^^
This song was always on the periphery for me (neither great nor terrible). Then I heard this version and I was entranced. I found the lyrics online and the song came fully alive for me. A light came on. Now I love this song. Yes, it's love. Coincidentally I am reading "House and the Universe" from Gaston Bachelard.
she sings beautifull
Brazil 66 and 77 my foundation in music and my love of jazz and this is the epitome
ttttttt
que melodía tan increíble
Soy guatemalteca, pero al escuchar a Sergio Mendes, siento que su música me dice lo que me encantaría ser brasileña...! Tal vez es una manera de expresar lo que me encanta su música. Gracias por compartir estos videos.
Just something fantastic...
Bought all Sergio Mendes albums since listening to Pretty World. So many memories and girlfriends swinging through London to Sergio. Just magic.
Sergio Mendes is awesome, Pretty World is a classic
Wonderful!!! I can sing this all day. This is such a great stimulant for any gloomy day! Such a treat!!! thanks...
musica maravillosa,por siempre.

Jason Ford Thanks for your post! It's my favorite thing to do, read the lyrics as I listen to music on YouTube.
+Brian -- Yes, I agree. The song moves propulsively through those gorgeous lyrics. The whole universe coming to life at all possible scales. Look for Gaston Bachelard's book "The Poetics of Space" -- the chapter titled "House and Universe."
again pls. a stick a stone.. not... worth it??! i dont G... the song... they just gv you headaches or something like that.!!?? ..
time out.. let me think.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤐👀🙄
they.. (girls) still gv a joy to ones heart... though. they gv .headaches too.... 😜🤔🤔
Wish I could sing it without looking at the lyrics...lol...one of my favorite songs...thanks to Antonio Carlos Jobim!
is a guy or girl singing?
It is two ladies singing at the same time. One of them might be Lani Hall, who happens to be married to Herb Alpert, chairperson of A&M Records. Sometimes Lani would overdub her own voice (sing both parts) but this sounds like two different voices (meaning, the other singer who usually performed with the group, singing, too) I say "might be" because there were times when other singers sang with Sergio Mendes' groups.
I heard a little bit of this song in the movie Joy (2016).
I was eleven years old when I heard this album for the first time and ever since, I been in love with Brazilian music and the sound of Sergio, great vocals and great percussionists always.
This was the first version of this song I heard as a child---took me years to find out who sung, and I was glad when I finally found out.
I love it
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hot song! One of my favorites of all time! This song makes me crazy, in a good way of course.
obra de arteeee...con jobim en guitarra!!!
I heard this song for the first time 4 years ago. I heard the DJ Spinner mix and was blown away. I couldn't locate that mix tonight and found a non remixed version of the song with Ledisi. It was by chance I clicked on this, having found the non remixed version to my liking. It seems every version I find is better than the last.
Does anyone feel like.. he or she needs to dance when listening to this song?,... Everybody says it is lovely or gorgeous,.. why not you folks say that you cannot refrain dancing with it?,. ...........or maybe it`s only me ?
Wow! Love this song 💙 One of my favorites
In the southern hemisphere March is the beginning of Fall. The intense sunlight, the brutal heat and humidity of summer is ending. It's a celebration just to be walking outside and enjoying the the things around you!
My amazing Mother would play this, takes me back. She is gone and this makes me smile, thank you for loading!
~ Michelle, You are a gorgeous woman. sjf
Michelle Seeley Your mum had a great taste in music👍🏼😊
Awesome been years since I heard it beautiful xx
Absolutely gorgeous! One of my favourite versions of this (number one is Elis Regina's, of course!)
+Felix A. Vargas A. Hahaha! No, picky means I am very selective with the music I like, sometimes too selective.
AhOk thanks a lot ;)
Elis lives!
claroclaro pero a los que nos toco la globalizacion esta version es tambien Magnifica
Carlos, me siento conectado ahora a través de la música y youtube. It es increíble!
Antonio Carlos Jobim played guitar on this track.
É DO BRASIL
Another truly great Sergio Mendes arrangement.
VERY perky and cheerful delivery of a song about something tragic. Somehow makes it poignant to me.
@mowgli2071 straight up almost cry every time i hear this song, but there's some cognitive dissonance because the tonality is happy
It's the promise of Spring.......
Fabulous song! Sergio's version is second to none! Jobim is da bomb. What *is* there about this song. Tears come - don't know why :-)
David Edwards This track makes me cry!
I've just spent 3 hours listening different versions of this famous song and this one is the best!!
Elis' version is stunning as well. 'Has a different vibe in this Mendes version which I attribute a lot to Lani Hall's vocals. Both have a different purity, for lack of a better expression, but maybe it's the mud, it's the mud... lol
i gotta go with the Garfunkel version
For the love of my life !Let's rumba, samba one day my love......
Love this song, my friends from the neighborhood look at me crazy when I play good music, everything to them is hip hop and rock. I get bored when I here the same things over and over.
@dwight dboy hester es ... when i HEAR... no here. je
Don't give up
God, I love this song!
Grew up with this version of this song, then one I got into jazz, found out all these other versions. It's a great song, beautiful and catchy, thoughtful and fun. No wonder people have covered it to death, lol.
Jobim was a master in writing simple lyrics to his songs. This song is very visual.
My favorite stanza is near the end.
"A pass in the mountains, a horse and a mule,
In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue"
It's like you are in the mountains overlooking Rio watching a glorious sunset.
Just magnificent!
There is a stanza that was left out of Sergio's rendition. It comes before "A pass in the mountains"
"A pin. A needle. A sting. A pain. A snail. A riddle. A wasp. A stain."
Jobim left us much too soon.
Ever hear the CD "Sinatra Sings Jobim" with arrangements by Jobim?
Simply Awesome..

A dislike wow I graduated from MPHS WE STEPPED PFF THIS ALBUM MY CPUSIN BOUGHT IT GREAT TUNE
What a brilliant piece of music and song! And so easily likeable too....
This is definitely my favourite version. Though I love the one by Elis Regina as well :)
One of my favorites! So much joy it brings tears to my eyes!!!
These lyrics remind me of Zen Buddhism, or Daoism.
Probably... What about melody?
Nothing comes to mind, apart from the obvious.. being the genre that it is. It's good though.
my new favorite song.
There are 5 dislikes of this tune? How is that possible? How could anyone not love everything about this song, the concept, the melody, the chord progression, the singers, the arrangement, the lyrics....? I'm blown away that anyone could dislike almost anything bossa nova, but this tune? It's a classic. It will be around forever -- fortunately, long after the 5 individuals who actually gave it a thumbs down.
@J Lacey
I know absolutely nothing about the mathematics of music, nor can I read it, but I know what I like, and I dig this song.
I've been listening to Sergio Mendes&Brasil '66 since I was 12 years old in 1968.
Lani Hall's voice always gave me aural pleasure, as well as her harmonies with, was it Janice Hansen?
J Lacey Just be thankful that you are not one of them !
J Lacey "The melody and the chord progression stand on their own."
26 people wouldn't know what a _chord progression_ is if it smacked them in the face with a stick, a stone and a sliver of glass simultaneously.
P.S. W a a y more than 26, to be honest.
Some people love the song so much, that they turn their smartphones upside down to like it again. Others simply have fat fingers... Plus a few trolls that dislike whatever humans like.
It came from the Trumps !
enjoyable!
The Music of Romance....
I am in HEAVEN.....!!!

siemon j. franken Thank you👍🏼
Thanks for the lyrics friend
Best English rendition of this classic song
Regina and Jobims version the best one in Portuguese.
Not quite the right order for this version but still nice
sergio mendez = soccer
What a classic, even my kids love this
so fresh😉
I heard it said that Jobim wrote this "stream of consciousness" lyric and it got him out of a writing block…Interesting!
Literally!
A wonderful period in my life; I was 17yrs old when this came out. the arrangement, lyrics, vocals, instruments, are beautiful. the 70's jazz-fusion period will never be repeated. Now in my 50's I think about when I was 17 and with everything ahead of me. Love-it! Love-it!
