If I'm reading this right, the point of the human tableaus in the swamp is to appear like mannequins at first then to move which horrifies the boat riders because they are ment to find them "grotesque". The idea being that there visages challenge the worldview of the classicly "attractive" teenagers. However, I think that idea losses some of it's punch these days. Back in the 18th and 19th century in the time of "freak shows" and when the obesity epidemic was in its infancy there was a much stronger idea of what a "normal" appearance was. Even as recently as the 90s their was noticeably different reactions to obese people on the street. Now in 2019 the figures in this video just look like normal people in costumes, and the students freaking out over them look silly. It looses a good deal of it's punch. The "ugly" still get discriminated against, but the idea of what is normal has expanded since this video was made. (Or that is the feeling I get when watching it anyway).
