Seals & Crofts - The Boy Down The Road Lyrics

Long long ago in a house up the road
Lived a maiden so beautiful.
Day after day she looked the same old way
As the sun shone off her hair of gold.
Someday I would go there and ask for her hand
Just as soon as I become a man.

In the afternoon she'd sit in the shade
And wave as I watched from down the road.
Time after time I wished my head to lay
In her arms and at last she would know.
Then one day a stranger came to call
And took her far away from down the road.
I watched 'til the dusk from the fields down below,
But in vain for the night began to fall.
Then came the message that summoned me to town,
And my knees gave way to the ground.

They say that this message came with her dying breath,
The very last words she ever spoke:
Give my love to the boy down the road,
And tell him not to cry, for I know.

I ALWAYS LOVED this song. Their harmonies are exquisite, to be sure, not to mention their string work, chord changes, etc... What ever happened to them? They don’t seem to have stayed as long as their skills/talents would’ve carried them. Probably got sick of the service to self Recording Studios’ BS, just like many other artists.

Well, they Blessed us with such Wonderful tunes that we will Love & enjoy for all of our years, yes? ~*~

  4. M.... ....

I always thought the music captured the mood of the story very well.

  10. J.... P....

in this day of unaware individuals,no one has time. to take in the beauty of music like this.you have to have sensitivity and actually be involved with life that surrounds you! what a loss to humanity! for this music is priceless!

  11. W.... H....

remembering, playing it on my guitar and singing along some, ... such memories. so touches my heart, ... heartwarming, sad. beautiful, ... ty for the share.

I live in a military town.  When this song was 'recent' I spoke out during a gathering how nice this song was.  A soldier scoffed.  That is a mindset of many in these pursuits.  I think that they might 'only' understand love when "love" is deprived to them.

+Andre R. Newcomb You're right--it has a gorgeously sad melody with a matching melancholy narrative behind it. For someone with the kind of ears and perception you seem to have, I'm sure it was a no-brainer how nice this song was. As for soldier boy, the song's story was probably completely lost on him: it doesn't have a repetitive chorus barking orders on what to think or feel every forty-five seconds. This song builds a subtle experience. You have to bring your brain and a sense of illusion for it to hit home, make crystal-clear sense. Some people have very little of one and less of the other.

  15. E.... S....

I remember and cherish this song from my past. I was and still am a hopeless romantic. So much great songs and
times when younger.. Not like it is now..

This was great! Not many truly romantic songs out there. This one touches the heart.

This brings back such veryhappy carefree memories of a MUCH easier time. I wish my kids could enjoy some of what I did. They certainly enjoy my music more than most of the modern crap. They think Im a "hippie!"

  19. 9.... ....

WOW ...  Eventho'  I wore the grooves of this vinyl,  I'd forgotten! Thank you, what a special album they created.

  20. J.... S....

just as haunting now as it was 30 years ago

  21. D.... M....

thank you for making it easy to find this song, i was a teenager when this came out and the memories of listening to this album brings mixed emotions all strong in content.

  22. D.... ....

    This still gives me goosebumps

  23. P.... B....

This song evokes memories of my youth in grade school when I used to stay late and all alone in the art room being creative and playing this song over and over again on an LP (it was the last track as I recall). It took me many years to find this song again-I was almost beginning to believe it was just a dream. Thanks to Youtube we are reunited again. I'll get the box of Kleenex ready...!

  24. l.... s....

God I love this song. I was always one to love music, and love the songs that weren't popular. this song I just LOVE the ACOUSTIC GUITAR, and as always the Harmony. My sister had this album when I was like 5. she was 11 years older. I'm now 46 and I think that this is one of my favorite songs to this day. Laura Sirmons

  25. C.... T....

I grew up on this song and it still evokes the beauty and wonder of growing up that I felt every time I listened to it as a child.

  26. A.... E....

I disagree as I have possessed the album containing this song for 40 years and this song has not lost any of its pathos and passion over this time

  27. J.... ....

I read the lyrics long, long before I heard this song....I'm generally disappointed. S+C completely fumbled the ball and conveyed only a scant trace of the power of the story. Kudos for 'Summer Breeze', but this song is just roaring to be remade.
