MY FAVORITE SEAL ALBUM OF THEM ALL!!! Definitely his darkest (production went a long way on that end, all because Seal and producer Trevor Horn were buttin' heads over what general direction to take on it-lol) yet quite possibly his most rewarding in retrospect. It's too bad his label (Warner Music Group) didn't feel the same way and made him shelve his next studio recordings for what would've been his official follow-up album: 2001's aborted 'Togetherland'. If I was him back then knowing how I was treated by my employer in that moment, I would've just walked out and gone indie. Wasn't like he had much of anything left to prove at that point after reaching full-fledged worldwide stardom off his breakthrough 1994 sophomore release. My 2 cents, of course...

This is one of best albums ever made.

I think the reason for so many dislikes is because this album was the follow up to the very successful Seal 1994 album. It also took him four years to produce and release it. One reason was because, after being ZTT Records and thus Seal's distributor in the US, Warner Bros had went behind ZTT Records owner Trevor Horn's back after the success of Seal 1994 and offered Seal a record contract separate from Seal's contract with ZTT Records. Naturally, this angered Trevor Horn, who had first discovered Seal as a London street musician or what they call busker in the UK, took him in, signed him to a deal with ZTT, and produced his first two albums which were very successful. It would take Seal close to two years to convince Trevor Horn to come back into the fold and help produce this album. Trevor is known in the industry for being a perfectionist in the studio, but he didn't put in very much perfection into this album since he knew that Warner Bros was going to benefit from the sales of it more then he would. And this has been the case ever since with all of Seal's releases post ZTT Records. Warner Bros thought they were getting a good deal when they signed Seal because he had recorded a cover of Steve Miller Band's song "Fly Like An Eagle" for the Space Jam soundtrack and produced the song himself without Trevor Horn's help. Seal's cover of that song also became a huge seller, so they all thought nothing to worry about. How wrong they were.
