Screaming Jets, The - Eve Of Destruction Lyrics
The eastern world
It is explodin'
Violence flaring, bullets loading
You're old enough to kill
But not for votin'
Then what's that gun you're totin'
When even the Jordan river has bodies floating
But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Don't you understand
What I'm tryin' to say
Can't you feel the fear
That I feel today
There's no running away
There'll be no one to save
With the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy
It's bound to scare you boy
But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
My blood's so mad
Feels like coagulating
And I'm just sitting here
Contemplating
I can't change the truth
It has no regulation
A handful of senators
Won't pass legislation
And marchers alone
Can't bring integration
When human respect
Is disintegrating
This whole damn world
Is too frustrating
But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Think of all the hate
There is in Red China
Then take a look around
To Selma, Alabama
You might leave here
For four days in space
But when you return
It's the same bloody place
The beating of the drums
And the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead
But don't leave a trace
And hate your next-door-neighbor
But don't forget to say grace
But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Yeah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Screaming Jets, The Eve Of Destruction Comments
The one version of this song that makes it listenable. Better than the whiny, cringey, horribly voiced original
When we lose our free rights and free speech fucking oath we are on the eve of destruction.. silence is the true sign of fear mongering going on
Eliminate about 90 % of the instrumental crap,
this would be pretty good.
Amazing cover! They made it their own, without losing the essence, of this incredibly powerful song. If you’re not going to cover this song, this well, don’t cover it.
Sounds like they're in a hurry to sing it
this whole fukn world is so frustrating! the jets rock. xx
Awesome cover of this song!!!
the best version of this song :)
I had the privelige of meeting paul Gleeson daves father in forster on holidays what an inspirational man paul
better than the original !
all on the eve of destruction...great sound of dave gleeson
Mafia 3 brought me here :)
Great cover of this song! "keep On Rockin In The Free World".
I love the "Jets"... But I way prefer Barry McGuire's version of this song...
The Jets version sounds to "boppy" for what is supposed to be quite a straight up serious song
McGuire's version captures the essence of its intent - and the raspy lyric sets the tone perfectly...
nup. the screaming jets do the best cover. bring it up on your utube. ♡
they are a great band
i like it.. bright sound up tempo peppy.. but i agree with someone below barry's growl is what made the original and is the only downside here
I have listened to the original and so many covers of "Eve of Destruction". The Screaming Jets are by far the best and if you don't agree then just throw your arms around me ♡
@Cassandra Bevan Right on!!
Peace & Love
Sorry, I wanna keep my arms. I agree though.
Definitely best cover, but throw your arms is a hunters and collectors song. I thought I’d give you a helping hand, because your comment sent shivers down my spine... I think you know, that I know better :-)
Cassandra Bevan I agree with YOU 💯💯 Percent good quality NEWCASTLE 🎤🎸🎧 BAND 💯💯 Percent
I like this version. :)
they didn't have to copy all the melody variations of the original.
as a remake, I prefer the Dickies.
"the original is better" is the most annoying thing to see in the comments box of cover songs...the point of cover version songs is for the fun of it, an/or to put a different musical perspective on the song...shut the hell up and enjoy the music, haters.
Yep! Well said
Indeed, good sir.
Just as annoying as "better than the original".
i hope they at least had fun, cuz they sure didn't put much of a new twist. except the solo at 2:00.
The lyrics were delivered with more feeling in the original, this seems to be a perfunctory reading by comparison.
Eureka Se. 1, Ep. 6 :D
Aussie Rules. Oi Oi Oi. We had something before the pokies and globalisation. It was called pub rock. The Screaming Jets still going strong. Never say Die Aussie
What a shi*** cover! blech!
fine cover, well done.
you should have lived here mate in the 70s 80s like I did !
The Dickies version kicks the shit out of any other version of this song!!
nice cover
the original is better....
@famileri AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI

aussie, aussie, oi ,oi ,oi
What you say is correct but why leave in Red China and omit Selena Alabama? i would have no problem if they omitted both or neither. Marketing involvement I would expect. When I was in China I played a DVD of Australian music and I had forgotten that it included a small piece of film from the Ti'ananmen Square incident (Russell Morris's Real Thing). No one batted an eyelid at it even though most, especially a couple of policemen, knew what it was.
@baird55aus I don't mind the "in your own backyard" line, Selma Alabama was topical when the song was written, but most people under 30 would have no idea what it meant nowadays.
As for the "Red" it refers more to communism, as in "The Reds" from back in the Cold War period - this song was written in 1965 which was pretty much the middle of the Cold War.
@baird55aus It was actually Selma Alabama. Their song they can change it how that want. Although Yes I like Selma Alabama better. It makes a stronger point. Research what Selma Alabama is.
What this "In your own back yard" rubbish what happened to "Southern Alabama"
Grant teaches me at TAFE, best teacher ever.
How many bands did a song with the same name as this. Cause this ones better.
Go the Jets. Used to love seeing these guys live.
Anyone get an ad for Korean Air come up in front of this? Random ad generating computer thingy has a sense of humour.
does anyone remember them when the core of the band went by the name "Aspect"?
Tremendous now and awesome then.
this is prety much my fav song from this time
its true as and the beat is perfict
The Aussies have been kicking the collective world’s rock-n-roll butts since the 70s. Rose Tattoo, the Screaming Jets, the Angels, and of course, (transplant) AC/DC.
Airbourne, the Jets are newer versions, and Hell ‘N Diesel is the newest I have heard.
American rock is just flat dead.
Thank God I, an American, have access to “pub rock” due to the Internet.
How can one not enjoy Rose Tattoo?
just as the holy trinity of england hard rock was "purple ,zeppelin, sabbath "
I feel the aussie one is acdc , the tatts , the angels ,,,, but put "the choirboys " there too.....an alberts band like the rest ....and also "Heaven " -oh yeah.
i saw the Jets at the Grand Prix this year and they played this song....was great
not a bad cover but missing barry's mature growl
