Scott Walker - Jackie Lyrics

And if one day I should become
A singer with a Spanish bum
Who sings for women of great virtue
I'd sing to them with a guitar
I borrowed from a coffee bar
Well, what you don't know doesn't hurt you
My name would be Antonio
And all my bridges I would burn
And when I gave them some they'd know
I'd expect something in return
I'd have to get drunk every night
And talk about virility
With some old grandmother
That might be decked out like a christmas tree
And though pink elephants I'd see
Though I'd be drunk as I could be
Still I would sing my song to me
About the time they called me "Jacky"

If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for just one little hour
Cute in a stupid ass way

And if I joined the social whirl
Became procurer of young girls
Then I would have my own bordellos
My record would be number one
And I'd sell records by the ton
All sung by many other fellows
My name would then be handsome Jack
And I'd sell boats of opium
Whisky that came from Twickenham
Authentic queers
And phony virgins
If I had banks on every finger
A finger in every country
And every country ruled by me
I'd still know where I'd want to be
Locked up inside my opium den
Surrounded by some china men
I'd sing the song that I sang then
About the time they called me "Jacky"

If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for just one little hour
Cute in a stupid ass way

Now, tell me, wouldn't it be nice
That if one day in paradise
I'd sing for all the ladies up there
And they would sing along with me
And we be so happy there to be
Cos' down below is really nowhere
My name would then be Junipher
Then I would know where I was going
And then I would become all knowing
My beard so very long and flowing
If I became deaf, dumb and blind
(was: If I could play deaf, dumb and blind)
Because I pitied all mankind
And broke my heart to make things right
I know that every single night
When my angelic work was through
The angels and the Devil too
Would sing my childhood song to me
About the time they called me "Jacky"

If I could be for only an hour
If I could be for an hour every day
If I could be for just one little hour
Cute in a stupid ass way

don't remember any other singer attempting this song.

Marc Almond must be a figment of my imagination.

  23. n.... ....

Poor guy. He was saddled in pop music with a great tenor voice.

  24. N.... I....

You tried to write this now and the snowflakes would be up in arms about references to: queers (homophobic); opium (encouraging drug abuse); Chinamen (stereotyping); ass (Offensive); procuring young girls (Hmm, probably a bit dodgy, but it is just a song).

    N.... I....

Oh dear you have no concept of irony.

  28. R.... M....

This song came out in 1965, was Sinead O'Connor alive? Actually, it was written originally by Jacques Brel and translated....

    R.... M....

I think along with the still at the beginning it was a way, though not needed, to try and get past the content ID system. Given it is a blatant lie that is the only thing I can think of.

  29. t.... ....

I'm surprised people were okay with someone singing "stupid-ass" in 1967.

  30. L.... c....

The rop and the colt. Very good of the movie Cemetery without Cross.

  31. R.... v....

writer Sinéad O'Conner? She must be ahead of her time.

    R.... v....

This is a Jaques Brel Song. There is a song "Jacky" on O´Conners debut album, for what she is credited there. Has nothing to do with this song here. Who ever credited her on this song here must be an android without hearing aid or something.

  32. j.... e....

wasn't this written by Jacques Brell ?

  35. M.... M....

  36. p.... c....

Have to admit I haven't listened to many of his songs I the past (Just singles etc) that has changed now such a good singer good looks and durability

Having only been conceived in the last quarter of 1969, I cannot make any claim to be a 60s child, or lived through it. lol. I have said many times over a lot of music on YouTube, that I am so glad that YouTube came along for those of us, born too late & never got to go to live concerts of these people but they are here for us all to share & enjoy. Thank You!

Music losses from Scott Walker to Dick Dale. What's sad is there are no creative replacements. At least there is a visual and audio records for musical security blankets and future times. Thanks for sharing.

  64. Z.... A....

Thanks Scott for so many great songs. Your voice was unique and although the sixties became more famous for songwriters rather than singers, your voice will always be like a thread of pure gold through that amazing decade. Hope you dont Rest In Peace , but meet up with Brel in the great Bordello in the sky and Party.

  65. T.... H....

    Rest In Peace Sir.

  66. p.... m....

"In a stupid ass wa-a-ay!" The fuck. This was aired in the 60s . . . The emperor has no clothes, I suppose, but still, your commenters are delicious. I eat them up.

  67. J.... F....

This song is never mentioned when talking about Scott Walker. It’s a bloomin’ classic, great words!

    J.... F....

    That's why its never mentioned!

    Fantastic stage presence.

Scott Walker showing Bowie how it should be done, RIP my man😪

    C.... B....

@Frances Moore You are right: Bowie is world-famous and will be for a long time.. Its not fair to compare them, its like comparing a man that sings ok with ehmmm... David Bowie!! Just look at how many succes and money David Bowie had, and how so many people in the Netherlands were crying when we heard the news of his death on the radio or read about it in the papers. The eight o'clock news opend with David Bowie that day.... S. Walker dies and it isn't even in the papers... enough said. Sorry I understand you are a big fan and I like that song'Jackie' too! <3

    C.... B....

Sunny A...... I respect your preference for Bowie. However, he was a huge fan of Scott Walker. Scott led the way for Bowie and others. Scott’s creativity was the catalyst for many bands to emulate him and feed off his talent. Scott in many ways was ahead of the times and it was a few years before the music world caught on and capitalised on his music. David Bowie craved celebrity and fame and took every opportunity to ensure that happened. Scott Walker did the opposite and craved privacy and wanted nothing to do with celebrity. He led a very private life. That is why there was a low key announcement of his death.
David Bowie cried when Scott Walker sent a personal birthday message to him! He also produced 30century Man. A retrospective of Scott Walkers music.

    C.... B....

Sunny A. It’s like comparing a chair and an apple

    C.... B....

@Frances Moore thanks for that intelligent take. Bowie had a cute cute voice and talent in all directions. I don't know much about Scott Walker but he is also idolised and judging from this performance, rightly so. ps i have just committed to singing this at Karaoke. I only did so on the basis that I vaguely liked the song and have a good friend called Jackie. Was shocked to learn how good Scott Walker's singing is on such an awkward song. I feel like i have made a major booboo as I can barely hold a note!

    C.... B....

I’m sure Scott Walker had respect for David Bowie and I’m sure the respect was mutual on both sides. I like Scott Walker’s music a lot he was a very innovative musician with an amazing voice. On the other hand there is BOWIE , one of the most amazing musical talents ever ! Bowie actually changed music and I will probably not see anyone else like him in my lifetime. To say Bowie’s voice never came close to Walker’s shows how naive you are and as for creativity well let’s just let history speak for itself. Bowie didn’t get the nickname of CHAMELEON for no reason, I suggest you read up on his legacy. 👨🏻‍🎤⚡️👩🏻‍🎤

  69. S.... C....

The ultra low def is a stop down.

  70. D.... G....

    R.I.P you avant garde mastermind.

  71. N.... F....

First heard this sung by Marc Almond but you know what? This is miles better!

    N.... F....

Yes, Marc Almond was inspired by Jaques Brel, who wrote this song. Marc A did a CD covering J Brel songs called "Jacques". .. Just sayin........:-)

  72. G.... G....

Your amazing music will live as long as there are human ears (or alien ones?) to hear them.

  73. D.... A....

    RIP Scott Walker.

  74. M.... C....

    Wonderful!!

  75. S.... G....

It's evident he really enjoyed singing this Brel song. And it's great version. Noel Scott Engel did the UK a favour by choosing to make it his home for most of his life. We had the privilege of enjoying that voice for many years and still can. We didn't see much of him in recent years, that was his decision, but now he's gone knowing we will not see him again we feel it more profoundly. When asked "who had/has the best voice in pop culture" my answer has always been Scott Walker and always will be. No Regrets Scott and thanks for the beautiful music and memories.

    S.... G....

    Susan Gough beautiful tribute

It has been..a VERY long time since I have been authentically astonished by anything ...AT ALL. But THIS...THIS IS COMPLETELY UNHINGED. I am deeply frustrated that I only now discovered this guy.. it's like BlowFLY and Sinatra's ACID love child.

  79. D.... M....

What a great version. Brel is for sure applausing from somewhere.

  80. g.... p....

nothing feels stable in the west anymore, the icons who gave our times their flavour rapidly pass on, our political and economic structures continue to crumble, post modernism has left us unable to judge our cultural health.
As societies we've always placed immense importance in our creative health so it's apt our decline is soundtracked by the passing on of those who gave our time in the sun it's dramatic arc..

  93. C.... G....

Very Iron Maiden :D I certainly can hear this song being sang by Dickinson and played by the Maiden!

  94. M.... R....

Scott was a brilliant interpreter of Brel's masterpieces. Thanks for all the pleasure you have given us.

  95. D.... ....

I can see it now...Scott gets to Heaven's door and Jaques is there to greet him, "Mr. Engel...thank you for singing my songs, and giving them a timeless feel...let me buy say thank you and buy you a drink, and help you get your wings." I got turned onto Scott many years ago, and of all of the people who covered Brel's songs...Scott's versions are my favorites. He took them to another level, and I'm grateful to my good friend who I stayed with, on a trip to the UK, who would sneak into my bedroom (His music room) in the morning, and wake me up to "Jackie" and so many others Scott classics. I was instantly hooked. A shame to hear of his passing this morning. He was one of the greats!! And almost unknown in the states. And that's also a shame!!
