Savoy Brown - Taste And Try Before You Buy Lyrics

My mother told me
When I was young
Some people try
To con you, son
You got to separate
The truth from the lies
Taste and try
Before you buy

The army man says
Sign on for five
The army give you
A real man's life
You know I don't dig
That army jive
Taste and try
Before you buy

My woman looks at me
My woman says
Now pack your bags, boy
And get out of my bed
Five long years
You still ain't done me right
Taste and try
Before you buy

Now this is my life
It's the way I be
May not suit you
But it sure suits me
You got to live before you die
Taste and try
Before you buy

I've been trying to find out why these guys never got more popular......this sh*t should satisfy just about any rocker. What gives?
They have so much good music. I mean, it's not they only have 10 good songs, and that would be a lot for many bands, but they have dozens and dozens of fabulous cuts. Never seen a musician(s) more overlooked than maybe Chris Whitley.....probably forgetting some others.

    l.... ....

Well, they did get more popular... Foghat ring any bells?

I am blessed to have recorded a version of this song with Chris Youlden  in 1979

    @whitewitchoz It's also a bad-ass album cover.

Bob Brunning, the bassist on this song, died on October 18, 2011 (heart attack). Bob was actually the original bassist with Fleetwood Mac (yep, before McVie) but he left when McVie joined. If you ever hear Fleetwood Mac's "Long Grey Mare", that's the one song Brunning recorded with them.

Poor old Bob. For some reason I missed the news of his death. Met him a couple of times back in the day. I got his autograph and Peter Green's at Fleetwood Mac's debut gig at the Windsor NJF Festival in August '67. Some weekend that was! Topped off by Cream on the Sunday night!

    No pun intended!

There's a guy named Steve in Evanston, IL who owns a store called Vintage Vinyl. John Cusak used him and his store as a loose model for the film "High Fidelity". He actually has some of the old 60's sampler albums on CD! Some of the stuff I used to find on those albums I've never seen elsewhere.

Wow you too huh?I lived in Europe in the early 70's when I first heard this classic off of "World of Blues Power" (the old Decca release you mentioned)I played this album over and over.
    Sure takes me back.

Me too! Plus "The World of Blues Power Vol 2", Both great albums!

The photo of the guy on the album cover looks like it influenced the look of the cartoon character Shaggy from Scooby Doo , because I know this came out first.

OK, another four months...this was one of my favorite Savoy Brown tunes. For years I only had it on an old Decca sampler of blues/rock folks like Peter Green, Eddie Boyd, etc. I FINALLY found this import album and realized that it was from there. No US release!
