Sandy Denny - The Lowlands Of Holland Lyrics
On the night that I was married and in my marriage bed
There came a bold sea captain and he stood at my bed head
Saying arise, arise young wedded man this night for to go with me
To the low lowlands of Holland to fight the enemy
When the captain he gave another order and we had to march away
Saying there's many a blithe young married man this night must go with me
To the low lowlands of Holland to fight the enemy
But Holland it is a wondrous place and in it grows much green
'Tis a wild inhabitation for my true love to be in
Where the leaves they grow and the winds they do blow and strange fruit grows on every tree
'Tis the wild wild lands of Holland where twined my love and me
No shoes nor stocking I'll put on nor comb to go through my hair
Nor shall I sleep with any young man until the day I die
For the lowlands of Holland they parted my love and I

Sandy Denny The Lowlands Of Holland Comments
I listen to a dozen renditions of this song and like them all, they're all different to one another but this one seems 'differently different' to the rest. It's uniquely chilling. Sandy could take an ancient folk staple and make you feel like she invented it herself from scratch.
The background recording noise suggests this was recorded off a radio.
Thanks for the investigative work
Savage, lol

The first song I ever heard her sing live - 1971 - blew me away!
This is the first YouTube channel that I actually say is the best that I have come across. I listen to one of the songs you upload and keep seeing more. Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Shirley Collins, Judy Dyble, Joan Baez, Judy Collins... Then to the likes of Laura Marling and the amazing Linda Perhacs with her crazy but magnificent vision of seeing music in shapes within the sky - Not to mention, the beautiful and amazing Sandy Denny. Much of this, I have on vinyl and regard as my most cherished. You have so much of what I love here, mostly that music from the Folk Revival Scene of the 1960's. Sandy Denny, from her early music with Johnny Silvo, Alex Campbell... To The Strawbs, Fairport Convention and then on to Fotheringay, this lady is for me, one of the most important singers and songwriters of that genre and time. I think the version of 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' on Fairport Convention's Unhalfbricking shows this. If it was Folk, Blues or Jazz that she intended to pursue, whatever she wanted to do or would have done, she would contributed to that Music with pure beauty and in every aspect. Taken too early but will never be forgotten and it's beautiful to see that you have shared this here. Thank you very much.
Thanks for your words :-)
I love Steeleye Span's version of this haunting song, too.
such a different song
