Sandy Denny - Green Grow The Laurels Lyrics

Green grow the laurels, soft as the dew
Sad I was, darling, on parting from you
Perhaps in the future our love will renew
We'll love one another and promise to be true
I wrote my love a letter and he wrote me mine
I wrote my love a letter, he wrote me mine
Said: Keep your love letter and I will keep mine
You write to your love and I'll write to mine

I passed my love's window both night time and day
I passed my love's window both night time and day
And the looks that he gave me a thousand would slay
And the looks that he gave me a thousand would slay

Green grow the laurels, soft as the dew
Sad I was, darling, on parting from you
Perhaps in the future our love will renew
We'll love one another and promise to be true
I wrote my love a letter and he wrote me mine
I wrote my love a letter, he wrote me mine
Said: Keep your love letter and I will keep mine
You write to your love and I'll write to mine

Great interpretation of a timeless melody. Not exceeded. These melodies that are part of a secular line, move and today, could not compose, woul be anacronistic and even proscribed. Beautiful voice, slow, sond, with that tremolo.

  28. F.... S....

Always thought Joan Baez has the best female voice until I heard this lady. I’ve been exploring music since I was 12, and it feels sad that I learned about Sandy Denny at the age of 40, I think I will spend a considerable amount of time exploring this treasure

    F.... S....

Firas Salem I discovered her three Days ago, i'm 41. I'm embarrassed by that fact!

  29. J.... t....

Impossible not to love her voice....best female folk singer all times...that is for sure

  30. d.... ....

Such a spirit of love in this one! :)

  31. U.... R....

    Perfection voice of an angel

  32. E.... l....

Hm this has the same melody as the traditional song once I had a sweetheart .. does anyone know if Sandy wrote these lyrics or if they are also traditional? I heard sandy do a version of once I knew a sweetheart with the lyrics that usually go with the melody in the documentary Sandy Denny under review but can't seem to find it anywhere

  33. s.... ....

solo guitar and voice....and it doesn't get more deep and powerful, does it?

    s.... ....

    saskia316 agreed .... no it doesn’t :- )

  34. P.... P....

Her voice sounds like magic to me.Its the same feeling for me listening Mark Lanegan

  35. B.... M....

This is absolutely ridiculously gorgeous......i can't even

  36. D.... a....

Now I am an old man, I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to hear Joan Baez's marvelous vibrato soprano at the Newport Folk Festival 52 years ago, and then again later in person; and over the years whenever I wanted to hear "Silver Dagger," or "Boots of Spanish Leather." Joni Mitchell's "I Think I'm Falling" has always likewise been a favorite, and I love her brash candid behavior as she lives her private life in Canada. Sandy Denny had an angelic voice, and I have been in love with Fairport Convention and her heart ripping voice for so many years. I regret the youth will not have the privilege of hearing such music. Perhaps they will. Perhaps..... Why did she have to die? Why do so many assholes live to torment people when Sandy and others, (Amy Winehouse, for example), must leave us?

    D.... a....

I dont know why singers are subjected to such ppl who take kill and destroy ...the gift of song and the whirling mist of sensitivities are all from the muse god angel s choirs in heavenly places flowers that sing i dunno ..the other day i picked up my guitar and played a song ive been ill as of late but i managed to get l this song with vocals and sweet range ...i m sure i heard songers around me in the mist after i finished ....i heard sounds like voices coming from other places

    D.... a....

Singers from some where else in time

  41. s.... p....

I love Sandy Denny, but somehow I think this song is actually sung by Joan Baez!

  42. E.... R....

What is this from? Which record? Anyone know?

  43. P.... C....

Certains ont le don de partager leur profondeur spirituelle. Son cadeau était beau, envoûtant et épanouissant tout à la fois. Une voix gracile venue du fond des âges....!

Can anybody please tell me if Sandy Denny wrote this song? (green grow the laurels)
And if not, who did write it?
Or is it an old traditional song?
Any info would be greatly appreciated : )

    s.... m....

    it's a traditional

    s.... m....

It has been suggested that this song is actually the reason white cowboys got the name gringo in the south west. It was very popular during the cattle drive days and the cowboys would sing it on night watch.

    s.... m....

'Gringo the laurels'..? pmsl...ur a funny guy.

  53. s.... m....

    WOW!
20 years since I first heard this & it still makes the hair stand on the back of my neck.
    Thank-you to the good +ladysonja ; )

  55. M.... i....

beautiful song and incredible voice. wow

    M.... i....

December 1966. She'd only been smoking for a year, or eighteen months. Tobacco, perhaps a little weed. The drinking hadn't taken hold yet. But she always gave angels a run for their money.

  56. L.... J....

    never forgotten...

  57. M.... H....

No singer in pop history better voiced the sorrow of love lost than Sandy Denny. Martien

  58. b.... n....

so sad to have lost her so young, rip Sandy....

  59. D.... B....

The Battle of Evermore introduced me to this lovely voice... How dare I wait so long to post my opinion on how powerful her voice is...

    She was a soulful woman..

  62. k.... d....

    Her voice was MAGICAL.

  63. k.... d....

Someone doesn't like this? No accounting for taste.

  64. R.... ....

It has been said that it was Sandy who taught the angels how to sing..I believe that.

    R.... ....

Rossm3838 i just know she hears us all and is smiling as she knows she is still loved and her heart and mind have been given the peace and happiness that eluded her in this existence......rest easy sandy the dusky maiden will the voice of an angel.x

    R.... ....

    uniquely beautiful..always loved the lady.

    R.... ....

shame the angels wanted her back so soon

    R.... ....

You don't believe that really... but it's a lovely platitude.

    R.... ....

    lol what

  65. C.... P....

    ¡¡¡!!!

  66. m.... f....

there isn't anything more beautiful on this Earth than the voice of Sandy...IMPOSSIBLE!!!

  67. c.... o....

new favorite song..anybody know if Sandy's doing the guitar work?...i'd reckon so...

    c.... o....

+chris ott I think so. It sounds like her playing and is listed as so.

    c.... o....

thanks and i agree...i've actually since learned a (hopefully tolerable) way to play this myself

  68. c.... o....

    the very very best..thanky mucho

  69. j.... l....

they don't make songs like that anymore

    j.... l....

That's wrong. Folk, it's always there.

    j.... l....

You're absolutely right. It's a traditional song, and coupled to SUCH a voice, expresses a spiritual purity - an 'innocence' of spirit - that is quite unlike contemporary most songwriting.

  70. j.... l....

Get the fuck out of here..wow

    j.... l....

+jason london Yeah, she really was something else.

    j.... l....

+jason london Eloquently articulated, Jason ... no words could express our admiration better than that.

    j.... l....

+jason london hehHAhah... YUP! Every song i hear of hers feels like I just found 'THE best' ... till i hear another!

  71. M.... M....

    Another Sandy's pearl

  72. A.... ....

    unbelievable

  73. g.... d....

is that my 12 string that she is a playing ??

    g.... d....

+graham donachie Yes, it is. Sandy is using alternative open tuning, but I have no clue what it is. But yes.

    g.... d....

    .No,.I don't think it's a 12 string guitar , (never mind the photograph on your screen) I think it's a six-string ( flattop) guitar with an open-D- tuning....( or a dropped-D-Tuning )

  74. T.... E....

I have some knowledge of Sandys work but after this incredible performance I need to hear a lot more.

  75. t.... ....

First time I've heard this don't no how I've missed it my beautiful lovely Sandy

  76. A.... C....

Once I had a sweetheart, and now I have none...

    A.... C....

    +Andrew C. Same melody, isn't it?

    A.... C....

+ralphyboy25 yes I thought the same!

  77. m.... ....

    Truly Great Woman, bad girl.

  78. P.... ....

    The Passat!

  79. P.... L....

There could only ever be one 'The Lady'. Always in my heart, my sweet glorious Sandy.

  80. G.... F....

Some have the gift of sharing their spiritual depth. Her gift was beautiful, haunting and uplifting all at once. A voice of the ages...

    G.... F....

She was a truth seeker and story teller

    G.... F....

Totally agree..In a class of her own.

    G.... F....

    Yes, indeed.

  81. N.... ....

I heard her in an obscure piece tonight on the Sirius XM 'Loft' channel en route from work.  I got chills and nearly had to pull over onto the freeway shoulder.  I wish she had been with us for an eternity.  But, perhaps she is.

    N.... ....

your story is your answer and they are both deeply wonderful..yay good news!

    N.... ....

she died ages ago ? what are you on about

    N.... ....

    she is here

    N.... ....

She is and always will be .
While there are those who understand the meaning of real talent when confronted with it , SANDY will live on .

    N.... ....

Ballard Frogman ......as long as Sandy’s glorious voice and beautiful music are remembered, “The Lady” will *never* be forgotten. Sandy “lives on” through her legacy.

  82. H.... E....

    Love this. Beautiful.

  83. c.... o....

haint no one better, zanies,,shan't be

  84. v.... H....

I too loved LZIV's "Battle..." It was like from some other universe where my clan hails. Then totally by accident I found Fairport's "Liege & Lief." Man, what an album! It was just like this song, full of dark gothic English folk.

  85. j.... o....

you'll live an eternity in the hearts, minds and souls of all that are fortunate enough to hear your call

  86. e.... t....

Her voice cuts my soul like a crystal dagger.

  87. L.... ....

Oh, I know exactly how you feel... it's such a sweet mixture of joy and sorrow in the same moment. She moves me to my core.

    Beautiful song. I love it!

  93. G.... ....

    Just beautiful!

  94. E.... T....

A special talent lost to us far too early. Yes she was a wild child but weren't we all?
    Miss you Sandy.

  95. d.... ....

What a staggering voice.......still brings me tears after all these years.

  96. P.... A....

My favorite female singer of all time. This song is testament to Sandy's greatness.
An absolutely exquisite and beautiful singing voice..Sandy voice was so sweet and beautiful in my opinion, there was no equal to her. Sadly and sorely missed...

  97. h.... ....

    True love

  98. m.... ....

    real music. pure beauty
