I don't consider this song romantic. He clearly raped and killed Moonskin. But it's a great song nonetheless.

I will re-post my reply to some comment here, as it should increase the visibility of my message.

Generally, my aim was to argue why the lyrics do not necessarily have anything to do with rape and murder.
Please, do not get me wrong, I'm not trying to strip this song I happen to be in love with from its romanticism.
While my interpretation might be far from some fuzzy projections, I still deeply appreciate the beauty of the song, with its imminent sense of tragedy fueled with the excruciating longing for beauty.

I'd say it's more about symbolic death, when sexual fulfillment is found, and the god-like entity, once worshiped, is demystified by the act (and thus, symbolically killed or sent to a distant dimension, where the symbol no longer holds and power, remains but a distant memory, another tragic reflection of the past).

For me the line "the milky stream of life goes dying" is a clear metaphor for the climax followed til the bitter end - with ejaculation and the surrounding hormonal bath (which obviously supported the illusion) fading away, it is done. Or should I say, "consummatum est"? ;)
No blood, no gutting, no massacre.
Only a shadow of a spiritual experience, too fleeing, to be grasped or sustained.

As for "to shake death's hand" part, Samael, with their Swiss background, is very likely to be familiar with the French expression "la petite mort" (the little death) which is commonly used specifically to refer to orgasm, with its momentary state of ego loss or its dissolution, with that bittersweet taste of melancholy and insatiable hunger for transcendence.
It is as if "the same quest" that he follows "as a ghost" has something metaphysical to it, as it's clearly about something more than seeking consolation and oblivion in carnal pleasures.
Also, I would say it's normal for some temperaments that sex can be wild and intense, and even some level of violence is fine, if agreed between consenting adults; it might seem that there's something total and ultimate in the experience.

Yet, as much tempting, promising and stimulating the partner may seem, she is destined to fail the expectations of the one, whose desperate efforts are mere attempts to feed the black hole within.
(Quite often the modern psychologists state that only someone internally complete is capable of loving another in a healthy way.)
To diagnose the root cause of the tragedy: he takes romanticism and eroticism as means to the end of spiritual enlightenment or fulfillment; something ultimate. Since it is as deceitful as seeking eternal bliss in opioid drugs, they are doomed to fail and fall, regardless of the being he initially chooses to deify, as the state of sanctity projected originally on the woman, portrayed as an unearthly phenomenon, a statue (an abstract ideal trapped in a moment of time, nothing any person could ever live up to).

Please note that "nail" happens to be a... not exactly sophisticated synonym of having sexual intercourse. Introducing the cross and intertwining it with the overall wordplay adds an ironic, grotesque touch to the picture, which seems to go well with the initial "silly lover, silly romance / how pathetic / constant (...)".

As if we all were bound to fall victims to the same, ever-recurring patterns of delusions, as nailing and being enchained seems to have something in common as well, disturbingly.

wow..I absolutely agree, and me too, first thought at rapture or bad experiences by getting adult and that carried cross on which he will, may nail another star seemed in first impression like an allusion to the christian belief, to Jesus, carrying the cross.. superstar nailed.. but I considered that's all it is - an allusion used as metaphoric instrument.. All in all for me now seems more like a tragic romance, a failed love story, a girl broken, destroyed by love and romanticism.. All this stuff for interpretation is one thing that I love a lot at Samael... for not-knowers it seems like a black metal/deat metal band with gothic influences..and they expect undeep lyrics about zombies, dead stuff, Satan, Killing and hatred... but they have deep messages, kind of yoda-style/buddhistic confession, but with a whiff of anti-monotheistic fighting spirit (mentioned be "The Cross").. Samael are one of my favorites from the beginning.. no.. I confess.. I bought the Double "Worship him/Blood Ritual" but I didnt really liked the "Worship him".. but from that point on.. I loved them.. Samael had some downs "Reign of.." wasnt really a masterpiece and "Above" was so not-Samael.. I don't really count it to their discography..And the new song "Red Light" became one of my over-top-tracks!!! May Union arrive some day!!!

Maybe it would not be so clear and natural to read (sometimes a bit between the lines, I admit), if it weren't for the reader - the kind with voracious hunger for life, non-binary in terms of gender, pansexual... One that might have been trapped in a similar pattern before realizing, and as such, inflicted upon oneself a regime to overcome it.

Its my favorite album of theirs as well. 'Angel's Decay' is probably my favorite song, but I listened to it so much years ago I almost don't like it anymore.

Love this song, yet it's painfull to listen it. This was my first girlfriend's and my "song" years ago. Damn i miss her, almost always cry when listening this. The lyrics don't help, they fit so badly to my my feelings.
