I loved this song in 1987. Still do. If I ever meet Geddy or Alex, I'ma punch them in the weenie for not liking this song.

Domo arigato Mr. Roboto. Okay. That's Japanese, and Styx, but I think you get where I'm coming from here. Not all members of Rush liked this song, but I think it's still pretty good.

I hear this song and I think about what it would be like to be in the midst of all that history visiting China and just soaking it all in. Sights, sounds, the whole experience.

This song is epic! Inspirational lyrics backed by beautiful music! Love Rush, one and all,. But I have to say, if Alex and Geddy don't like it.... Too damn bad! Would have been a very minor tragedy had this track not made the album.

Wow, what a bunch of original thinkers in the comments. Alex and Geddy said they don't like it and everyone else mysteriously arrived at the same thought independently. Meanwhile nearly every other Rush songs gets a pass, even truly awful ones like Nobody's Hero.

The guitar alone on this song makes it great, but it's all good.

This song is pretty limp. However, there's hundreds of bands that have songs 1000 times worse. Neil turned Chinese in the late 80s or something....on a spiritual quest or some shit.

Sadly, even rush isn't perfect. But, at least they only have one bad song in their catalogue.

Doesn't surprise me it's Alex and Geddy's least favorite song. It's a mature spiritual song more for Peart who has always been the more intellectual of the bunch.

I think the main reason Geddy & Alex have such a strong dislike for this tune is that it doesn’t sound like Rush. That doesn’t make it bad, just different.

Mmm.. this song definitely conjures up memories of The Camera Eye and Entre Neue, or Jacobs Ladder, for their spatial / landscape sounds, at least it does to me.  What impresses me about this one, is the way the harmony transposes and mixes with, and between the three of them.  Listen as the focus goes from keyboards to drums to vocal, to guitar, then bass.  The refrain gently includes them passing riffs & focus between them, reminds of the early days

I'd say Scars from Presto...I can't even listen to that song. I like this song but it sounds more like a B side than an album track.

Asking who cares and then qualifying your opinion by caring about Neil's view is a little backwards. I also wouldn't call him a lyrical genius but he's incredibly talented and the words are part of what makes this song work decently.

I just love that tone in general, starting at around 8:05 John Petrucci gets a very similar tone in Metropolis Pt 1 and blended with Kevin Moore’s keys it’s absolutely sublime.

Don't understand the hate this song gets at all, even from the band members themselves.

Somehow Neil found it worth of music.

An odd track but it does fit into this album. Each song seems to about the unique aspects of the world.

One of my favourite songs on one of my favourite albums, and I own neither. such is life.

It took over 15 years for the "new" albums (anything after moving pictures) to grow on me. I love them now. That's a sign of good music. I got to see Rush on the Counterparts tour with Primus in Chicago. I still don't remember being there haha... smelled good though!

Yep. As I said in another post, I'm not big on this album overall, but this is a really well-crafted song. And just because Geddy and Alex dislike it, it seems like many Rush fans will parrot that idea.

Reginaldo Hernandez Dennis DeYoung of Styx says The Serpent Is Rising is the worst album they did, and one of the worst ever made. I guess Rush and Dennis are looking at it differently than we are.

I'm no big fan of this album, but this song is damn cool. Simple but sophisticated - great instrumentation.

Why did they record this if they hated it?

They respected Neil's vision and lyrics for the song and at the time they probably thought it was fine. I'm not sure if they ever "hated" it, Geddy and Alex might claim to dislike it or at least decline to play it live.

I just went back and listened to a Geddy interview, he says it's probably their least favorite song.

Boy howdy. 84-87 is the "What the hell happened to our hair" era of Rush.

They wouldn't come here from 1982 Signals tour gup tour they skipped. Power windows got cancelled Fucking g Blizzard in the.month of may Fucking sucked not seeing them. But they came back for presto tour

This just another production filler they have plenty of songs they never play live because they were not intended to be played in concert any serious rush knew this. They never played panacea, Madrigal, revendale etc
