Rush - Tai Shan Lyrics

High on the sacred mountain
Up the seven thousand stairs
In the golden light of autumn
There was magic in the air

The clouds surrounded the summit
The wind blew strong and cold
Among the silent temples
And the writing carved in gold

Somewhere in my instincts
The primitive took hold

I stood at the top of the mountain
And China sang to me
In the peaceful haze of harvest time
A song of eternity

If you raise your hands to heaven
You will live a hundred years
I stood there like a mystic
Lost in the atmosphere

The clouds were suddenly parted
For a moment I could see
The patterns of the landscape
Reaching to the eastern sea

I looked upon a presence
Spanning forty centuries

I stood at the top of the mountain
And China sang to me
In the peaceful haze of harvest time
A song of eternity

I thought of time and distance
The hardships of history
I heard the hope and the hunger
When China sang to me...
When China sang to me

Rush Tai Shan Comments
  1. B.... ....

Geddy hates this tune. They're a rock band.

  2. G.... G....

I loved this song in 1987. Still do. If I ever meet Geddy or Alex, I'ma punch them in the weenie for not liking this song.

  3. r.... ....

    Rush only believe in themselves
    None are believers in christ
    Sad Pray for them

  4. S.... B....

Every song on this album is awesome! Love the Bass guitar

  5. m.... b....

Antes yo tambien odiaba esta cancion porque es muy triste pero ahora me gusta. No es tan buena como turn the page

  6. T.... F....

Great song. I think their worst song is "Countdown". Terrible song I think.

  7. R.... D....

Geddy's least favorite song... but it's not that bad.

  8. R.... W....

I'm a huge Rush fan...this song is terrible...even worse than Rivendell.

  9. o.... ....

Domo arigato Mr. Roboto. Okay. That's Japanese, and Styx, but I think you get where I'm coming from here. Not all members of Rush liked this song, but I think it's still pretty good.

  10. C.... S....

the opening bit sounds just like Shenmue

  11. D.... 5....

I hear this song and I think about what it would be like to be in the midst of all that history visiting China and just soaking it all in. Sights, sounds, the whole experience.

Stirs the imagination of you let it.

  12. P.... B....

This song is epic! Inspirational lyrics backed by beautiful music! Love Rush, one and all,. But I have to say, if Alex and Geddy don't like it.... Too damn bad! Would have been a very minor tragedy had this track not made the album.

  13. M.... L....

I like thus tune and most of the album

  14. l.... ....

    Beautiful arpeggios in that outro.

  15. S.... ....

I never disliked this song. That said, I never liked this song either. It makes good "white noise" or an intermission on the album :)

  16. S.... S....

    a dream with a mission....

    S.... S....

A spirit, with a vision,... is a dream, with mission....  Rock on man!

  17. G.... M....

I love this song! this is my favorite album!

  18. A.... ....

Yeah, nope. Don't disagree with Geddy on this one.

  19. E.... N....

I think I'm the only Rush fan who likes this song. Even Geddy and Alex don't like it.

    E.... N....

I like this song a lot!

  20. c.... ....

Wow, what a bunch of original thinkers in the comments. Alex and Geddy said they don't like it and everyone else mysteriously arrived at the same thought independently. Meanwhile nearly every other Rush songs gets a pass, even truly awful ones like Nobody's Hero.

The guitar alone on this song makes it great, but it's all good.

    c.... ....

Wait... what? Nobody’s Hero? Awful?!? Yikes

  21. B.... D....

Some of the music reminds me of These Dreams by Heart

  22. C.... R....

    Sounds like 80s

    C.... R....

    because it is, 1987.

  23. A.... M....

This song is pretty limp. However, there's hundreds of bands that have songs 1000 times worse. Neil turned Chinese in the late 80s or something....on a spiritual quest or some shit.

  24. C.... D....

Sadly, even rush isn't perfect. But, at least they only have one bad song in their catalogue.

    Edit: Catalog

    C.... D....

    Which song?

  25. J.... ....

Imagine being so talented that this is your "worst" song!

    J.... ....

I thought dog years was considered their worst song.

    J.... ....

Mike Reiss I love Dog Years

  26. L.... W....

You never know what rush will play how Rush will sound they can bring out the culture Rush can put it down

  27. M.... C....

This song is awesome. Geddy said he and Alex don't like it, but, I don't believe them!

    M.... C....

Miles Codias I’m with you. I think lerxt and Geddy are fucking with us by saying such an abominable thing that this song sucks

  28. M.... S....

My absolute favorite Rush album. There isn't a bad track on it, including this.

  29. A.... D....

Geddy probably hates it because the bass isn't featured that much in this song

  30. R.... D....

Doesn't surprise me it's Alex and Geddy's least favorite song. It's a mature spiritual song more for Peart who has always been the more intellectual of the bunch.

    R.... D....

I'm not sure if I agree with that statement.

  31. C.... E....

I think the main reason Geddy & Alex have such a strong dislike for this tune is that it doesn’t sound like Rush. That doesn’t make it bad, just different.

    C.... E....

Mmm.. this song definitely conjures up memories of The Camera Eye and Entre Neue, or Jacobs Ladder, for their spatial / landscape sounds, at least it does to me.  What impresses me about this one, is the way the harmony transposes and mixes with, and between the three of them.  Listen as the focus goes from keyboards to drums to vocal, to guitar, then bass.  The refrain gently includes them passing riffs & focus between them, reminds of the early days

  32. N.... M....

Great song from a great album. This whole album is a masterpiece.

    N.... M....

A masterpiece yes, Neil Martin. My absolute favorite Rush album.

  33. M.... M....

Geddy's least favorite Rush song of all time. I couldn't agree with him more.

    M.... M....

I'd say Scars from Presto...I can't even listen to that song. I like this song but it sounds more like a B side than an album track.

    M.... M....

    @Brenden DeSimone Red lenses.

    M.... M....

I probably prefer this over prime mover. That song never did much for me. This one at least has nice keyboards.

  34. L.... S....

Who cares what Geddy and Alex think? Neil, the lyrical genius, loves it and so do I.

    L.... S....

Along with the rush song "there is trouble in the forest and the creatures have all fled".  From the Trees.  lol

    L.... S....

Asking who cares and then qualifying your opinion by caring about Neil's view is a little backwards. I also wouldn't call him a lyrical genius but he's incredibly talented and the words are part of what makes this song work decently.

  35. B.... ....

They may not like it , but THE MUSIC ECHOS the Lyrics PERFECTLY !!!

  36. U.... T....

    Wow this song is shit

    U.... T....

    I agree

    U.... T....

    You too?

    U.... T....

    Yeah man!

  37. b.... ....

Alex's guitar tone on this song is heavenly.

    b.... ....

Would love to know what effects he uses to get that tone!

    b.... ....

I just love that tone in general, starting at around 8:05 John Petrucci gets a very similar tone in Metropolis Pt 1 and blended with Kevin Moore’s keys it’s absolutely sublime.

  38. a.... ....

Don't understand the hate this song gets at all, even from the band members themselves.

  39. E.... F....

Somehow Neil found it worth of music.

  40. E.... F....

An odd track but it does fit into this album. Each song seems to about the unique aspects of the world.

  41. D.... H....

One of my favourite songs on one of my favourite albums, and I own neither. such is life.

  42. C.... ....

Hold Your Fire is such an underrated album.

    C.... ....

All in opinion, but one of my favorites

    C.... ....

    Sure is I love it

    C.... ....

I think T4E is easily their worst.

    C.... ....

It took over 15 years for the "new" albums (anything after moving pictures) to grow on me. I love them now. That's a sign of good music. I got to see Rush on the Counterparts tour with Primus in Chicago. I still don't remember being there haha... smelled good though!

    C.... ....

    ChevKen true

  43. S.... Q....

Alex's note progressions at the end is the best part of the whole album.

  44. C.... J....

It bums me out that Geddy and Alex don't like this song. It's one of their most underrated tracks in their discography.

    C.... J....

Yep. As I said in another post, I'm not big on this album overall, but this is a really well-crafted song. And just because Geddy and Alex dislike it, it seems like many Rush fans will parrot that idea.

    C.... J....

Christian Joseph Allbee - Every band has a song or songs they dont like just the way it goes !

    C.... J....

Christian Joseph Allbee I wonder why

    C.... J....

One of my favorite songs from probably my favorite album

    C.... J....

Reginaldo Hernandez Dennis DeYoung of Styx says The Serpent Is Rising is the worst album they did, and one of the worst ever made. I guess Rush and Dennis are looking at it differently than we are.

  45. F.... K....

I'm no big fan of this album, but this song is damn cool. Simple but sophisticated - great instrumentation.

  46. G.... W....

Why did they record this if they hated it?

    G.... W....

They respected Neil's vision and lyrics for the song and at the time they probably thought it was fine. I'm not sure if they ever "hated" it, Geddy and Alex might claim to dislike it or at least decline to play it live.

    G.... W....

I just went back and listened to a Geddy interview, he says it's probably their least favorite song.

  47. J.... C....

Sounds like something from a Martial Arts Soundtrack.

    J.... C....

Jeff Crowther Jr. A 1988 Steven Seagal movie

    J.... C....

Yeah, I can see this as the song played at the closing credits of some martial arts movie...

  48. T.... C....

This song is about as good as Geddys haircut at the time.

    T.... C....

Boy howdy. 84-87 is the "What the hell happened to our hair" era of Rush.

  49. J.... ....

It's not a bad song at all. I would listen to this any time over modern pop music.

    J.... ....

Tai Shan = a dustbin full of marbles rolling down a metal staircase

  50. d.... c....

    goosebumps

  51. H.... E....

Musica parte da trilha sonora de minha vida

  52. V.... ....

Why do people hate this song? It's pretty.

    V.... ....

Vacant - Listen i dont give a shit what anyone thinks , I've closed my eyes and listened to this Beautiful song i get lost in it thats what music is about !!!!!

    V.... ....

Your absolutely right ! Rock on Amigo !!!!

    V.... ....

People are haters, and will just hate on shit just to be hateful, no other explanations really.

    V.... ....

    I think it's beautiful.

    V.... ....

    Because it sucks

  53. s.... n....

    One of my favorites !

    s.... n....

Don't tell Alex and Geddy tho

    s.... n....

Adol Fitler Alex & Geddy hated this song so much they didn't vote against it.

  54. g.... m....

Lol , even lifeson agrees this blows

  55. T.... A....

I must have skipped this one I can't remember hearing it before lol

  56. p.... d....

ya Alex Lifeson Even said this Song Sucks

    p.... d....

phil duff Yeah Alex and Geddy didn't vote against it being on the album so big fucking deal.

    p.... d....

I think Alex and Geddy are fucking with us fans when they say this song sucks.

  57. M.... T....

Geddy and Alex hate this song.

    M.... T....

    weird but true...

    M.... T....

Mark T the way I heard about this song was that this was not what they were used to playing. It it is is one of their best in my opinion .

    M.... T....

Geddy and Alex are fools, lol.

  58. S.... J....

Danny Sexbang doesn't care much for this song

    S.... J....

Reginaldo Hernandez Hi mo I never got to see it time stand still doc.
I.think that really cool having Apache blood in you pretty awesome in my opinion.
I know the boys loved Chicago IL they certainly did some awesome concerts down there from what I'm told

    S.... J....

Reginaldo Hernandez I got see them 7 times here in Edmonton and once on Vancouver BC. Snakes and arrows.
They wouldn't come here from 1982 Signals tour gup tour they skipped. Power windows got cancelled Fucking g Blizzard in the.month of may Fucking sucked not seeing them. But they came back for presto tour

    S.... J....

    Reginaldo Hernandez lol

    S.... J....

one of the better songs from the modern era but then Rush have not produced anything good since Signals. The rest of the repertoire since then has been average at best

    S.... J....

jonybeam I thought Power Windows and Clockwork Angels were good

  59. V.... A....

    Tai Shan.....among the silent temples!!!!!

    V.... A....

waiting for the third building of the tabernacle unless i am mistaken.

    V.... A....

...and the Writings Carved in Gold...

  60. A.... M....

Geddy hated this song so much they never played it live LOL

    A.... M....

Yeah, but what does Geddy know about Rush? He even thinks "Caress Of Steel" is a weak album. He's a hack critic.

    A.... M....

    what ? no way...link?

    A.... M....

What did Minnesota fans do to piss them off like that?

    A.... M....

This just another production filler they have plenty of songs they never play live because they were not intended to be played in concert any serious rush knew this. They never played panacea, Madrigal, revendale etc
