Rush - Nobody's Hero Lyrics

I knew he was different in his sexuality
I went to his parties as a straight minority
It never seemed a threat to my masculinity
He only introduced me to a wider reality
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that he was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But he's nobody's hero
Saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero...lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero...not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero...not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying
Nobody's hero

I didn't know the girl, but I knew her family
All their lives were shattered in a nightmare of brutality
They try to carry on, try to bear the agony
Try to hold some faith in the goodness of humanity
As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that she was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But she's nobody's hero
Is the voice of reason against the howling mob
Hero...is the pride of purpose
In the unrewarding job
Hero...not the champion player
Who plays the perfect game
Hero...not the glamour boy
Who loves to sell his name
Everybody's buying
Nobody's hero

As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that you were gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

But he's nobody's hero
Saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero...lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero...not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero...not the glamour girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying
Nobody's hero

    Such a wonderful lyric.
I felt this when we saw regular UK citizens attack an Islamist terrorist as he tried to kill innocent people on London bridge - they were HEROES .... the man had two knives, a gun , in his back pack and a (hoax) suicide vest on... (they did not know it was hoax)

2 died, but they ensured it was not more ! HEROES -

A crap directed video. From concept to editing to content. Completely falls flat. The live background video in their old concerts was done right. See Rush live. Be amazed.

  52. L.... V....

    Excellent song thanks for sharing

  53. M.... M....

This music is a critic of how the goverment trends to help common sense hero, like cientists and firefighters, just to promote thenselves. But we have little heros in our lives, like our friends and family, that even without carrying the heroic type, should have the same respect.

  54. M.... 2....

Rush was so ahead of their time

  55. M.... W....

I think the line "Everybody's buying Nobody's Hero" sums up the essence of the song. The masses laud the "achievements" of celebrities who are simply famous for being famous, yet neglect Society's true heroes who make sacrifices to give rise to tomorrow's true achievers. They can't be bothered to consider the teacher who supplies her students with the necessary tools to make the Future's progress but can give you a play-by-play of the Kardashians' daily activities. And to think this song was released 25 years ago before we even heard of the likes of the Duggars or Beyonce. The masses deserve what they get.

  56. R.... B....

    Essa música é sensacional!

  57. A.... M....

    Sensacional...Rush atravessará milênios....

  58. C.... S....

Wow, the lyrics really touched my heart. I already knew the song but I've never really paid attention to its meaning.

  59. E.... B....

    It gets me every time.

  60. F.... A....

    ¡Qué buen tema!

  61. M.... W....

I cannot get enough of this song!

  62. A.... ....

"Is the voice of reason" (real news, intelligent well read people, empathetic people, people steeped in reality and science and facts), "against the howling mob" (lying loudmouth Trump the charlatan and buffoon and his cadre of simpleton sheep, Trump's unqualified government appointments that are now leaving in droves, Trump's constant lying and fake news; his lack of experience in politics and international diplomacy, etc. ... the list goes on with this incompetent embarrassment and his brainwashed followers).

  65. J.... S....

    Absolutely phenomenal band

  66. R.... R....

Deep lyrics and melodies, they still drive me to tears after so many years. Rush was one of the best rock bands ever. Just a little underrated here in Europe. Huge talent. Great song.

  67. c.... ....

Rush for me ends on this álbum!

  68. M.... ....

I am so sick of people supporting anti-reality. You are either male or female. If you do not feel this way, then there are two paths: your choice, or you think you were born this way. If you choose it, then you obviously know you are fucked up. If you think you were born this way: Really? Can you remember when you were 5 years old? You know nothing of your life from the age of birth until at least 5 years old. These are the very important formative years. Most likely, there are things in your early life that tilted you in the wrong direction. So, please, stfu about your fucking being born this way. You don't know shit. And, then it is funny how people are now "choosing" their sexuality. No fucking conflict there, is it? Fucking idiots.

    M.... ....

Were you born a piece of shit bigot or did you choose to be one?

    M.... ....

Get help you pathetic ignoramus! One's sexuality is innate. It is not chosen. Who are you to tell us whom we should love? Utter simpleton fool.

Alex always has awesome guitar sounds, open chords, full of harmonies, so distinctive, I wonder if Neil recorded with a DW Edge?, nice wood sound, solid punch, fat!

    D.... ....

DYK-music In a 1994 interview, Neil mentioned using A Solid Percussion snare drum on most of the Counterparts tracks.

  74. m.... ....

Beautiful and sad song- glad they made a video to tell this story. Shame Rush never made a conceptual video for Ghost of a Chance- another of their songs I find beautiful & haunting (pun unintended).

  75. S.... A....

    Rush is so great!!!!!

  76. M.... ....

The lyricist (Neil Peart) isn't saying that heroism is a silly idea; quite the opposite. He's saying that real heroism is often overlooked due to our inflated, fictional depictions of what constitutes a hero. These lyrics affirm the idea of heroism by celebrating the 'unsung heroes' who persevere through adversity & tragedy in a heroic manner ("grace
under pressure" to quote the title of a Rush album), yet never receive the widespread recognition & fame associated with the more commonly depicted & overblown notions of heroism.

"Nobody's Hero" is from the album _Counterparts_, whose last song, "Everyday Glory", is somewhat of a counterpart to this notion of heroism. "Everyday sunrise / Another everyday story / Rise from the ashes ablaze / With everyday glory" and, "If the future's looking dark / We're the ones who have to shine."

Clearly Peart, believes that people can be heroes (i.e., act in a heroic manner); he's just pointing out that most heroes go unnoticed & never get proper credit for their slice-of-life struggles & accomplishments. The flashy, bombastic nature of melodramatically depicted heroism can make us lose sight of the more down-to-earth, slice-of-life forms of heroism. Although these more humble forms of heroism are often overlooked & ignored, they are still very real, and very worthy of notice, appreciation, and praise. Instead of dismissing the notion of heroism, Peart is re-affirming, and more clearly defining, real-life heroism.

Well spoken and well said, my friend.

  78. S.... ....

I'm largely a conservative, but Nobody's Hero has it right. I lean somewhat to the left socially, and I completely side with the meaning of this song (mostly the first verse is what I'm speaking of). It is one of the few songs that can bring me tears.

    S.... ....

one of the things the conservatives arent given enough credit for is their open minds. And I'm a liberal.

  83. T.... I....

Been following this band since their intro into the US. Quite a deep tune.

  84. u.... ....

I can't like this song enough and have more respect for RUSH for creating it. Whether it's about a gay person or a girl lost to violent crime....both sometimes go hand in hand thanks to the homophobic bullies who have picked on or beat on someone that was different from them . Those type of people have issues with their own sexuality and too afraid to honestly look in the mirror at themselves. I like the comment from Michael Little " This song is basically a musical middle finger to homophobes.... they deserve it!" Or ANYONE who bullies someone different from them. Whether religion, sex, sexual orientation, race etc. Those who are going to trash my post, you are the ones that need to look at why you have all that hatred and take that look in the mirror!

    u.... ....

  88. T.... ....

this song came out at the end of 93, mtv barley showed it.. cause the music scene really changed. it was all the grunge stuff.. and alternative college music that dominated the charts and mtv at the time. Great song..

  89. M.... H....

This song somehow always moves me to tears. "The voice of reason against the howling mob" is needed more than ever these days

  90. B.... P....

yah, been there.,I could give a rat's rosy red butt who does what in their personal life, what I look at is how good are you at what you do?, been around tuff guys that would absolutely FREAK at the thougt of even going into a gay bar

  91. t.... ....

I  have a RUSH tattoo that's a collage of album covers, along with a line from this song. "Try to Hold Some Faith in the Goodness of Humanity" Sometimes it's hard to do. But those words being tattooed above my heart are a constant reminder. Not only of my love for the band, but of  the meaning behind the song. To always TRY to believe in the good in people. The unsung heroes you meet everyday. Not everyone goes around waving a flag at their accomplishments, saying "look at me!!" Those people are the true heroes, the one who don't ask to be put on a pedestal. Off my soapbox.. I love RUSH, and I will miss seeing them live. No matter how many times I've seen them, it's always the best day ever, when I get the pleasure of a RUSH show.

    t.... ....

thurmanmusic Happy New Year my fellow Rushian! You my friend clearly get this song, and this band. I've seen them so many times, but I could see them countless more times! They can never be replaced. Rock n' Roll ain't the same without em. But their music and the memories will live on forever.

  92. W.... ....

I love this song and video !!! I had no idea Rush made a video to there track "nobody's hero". The truth heroes are the ones you don't hear about.

    W.... ....

You wouldnt have known with that crap they play on music tv ,they never did give rush much airtime. But some of the others were played to death. That’s why. I love rush so much they did it without any help from mainstream help.they never did bow down and said many times if they fell flat on there face oh well but they didnt. And the truth is in the pudding.

one of the songs i wish i saw them perform live..

  96. c.... ....

    What a beautiful song.

  97. A.... D....

I wish more people could understand the true meaning of this song. I feel like the opening line gives off all these misconceptions when it's really about all the people that do good things and never get anything in return for it. That's why I like this song, because I've seen it with my own eyes. But I don't think a real hero wants to be recognized and adored by everyone, it would just take away what makes them heroes in the first place by being put on a pedestal. I'd like to take this time to thank them though, because it's these small acts of kindness that seem to be waning in today's society.

    A.... D....

That's what I thought it was about from the start... About heroes that nobody knows, if people listened to it for longer than the first minute they would know that 😂

    A.... D....

    MASKS SHOULD NOT BE NECESSARY!!!

    A.... D....

Well and rightly said, Allen. Thank you for your comment.

Very well explained and understood. Do good, the right things without asking anything in return.

This was ALSO about making a stand for LGBT acceptance. Deny it all you want, but that was what they were doing. It seems passe in 2020, but it was BOLD in 1993.
