Rush - Mission Lyrics

Hold your fire
Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame 'til the dream ignites
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission

I hear their passionate music
Read the words that touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart

When I feel the powerful visions
Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct
I wish I had that drive

Spirits fly on dangerous missions
Imaginations on fire
Focused high on soaring ambitions
Consumed in a single desire

In the grip of a nameless possession
A slave to the drive of obsession
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission

I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
But dreams don't need to have motion
To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action
Pride turns on the drive

It's cold comfort
To the ones without it
To know how they struggled
How they suffered about it
If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

We each pay a fabulous price
For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission

I'm a musician. But when this song comes on, I'll put my instruments away and just listen. I don't want to spoil the song

  3. G.... C....

Bloody love this album , I need to dig it out again

  4. V.... K....

Neil at 3:53 with the extra "chick" of the hi-hat. I've always wondered since 1987 if that was on purpose, or if they forgot to remove it post-recording or something. Sounds a little off the beat and out of place....

  5. d.... ....

Man that takes me back. Geddy’s vocals are amazing on this song. And Alex’s solo at the end is...well, I can’t find the right adjective to do it justice. Heavenly? Beautiful? Liberating?

    d.... ....

    Transcendent.

  6. A.... W....

I'm 60, and have seen every tour since Signals. My top 3 Rush songs...Tom Sawyer, Subdivisions, Mission...Geddy's passionate vocals in this song are unrivalled!

While the late 80s were not their greatest in my opinion, it was still better than anybody else out there. Thank you Rush for being a part of my life since the 70s.

  10. T.... d....

I could not imagine my life with out rush’s music in it.

This group is one of the best groups I've ever heard in regards to the heavy rock genre in its beginnings, I've been listening since 70, 80, 90 and 2000, I congratulate you Rush are great musicians, greetings from Quito / Ecuador

Alex is outstanding...i am a professional Drummer,,and yes as a drummer i am a very good listener....His Commend of that Instrument is often overlooked...he has such a signature sound, approach and Feel.....his solo passages on this track hold your attention without being Flashy & busy...his command and use of chords within the solos are GENIUS..

Mission A Spirit with a vision is Dream with a MISSION! I can hear this song over and over again. What a beautiful song! Thanks Moe. Larry, and Curly!

  31. K.... E....

Anyone who can't appreciate Hold Your Fire is not a true music lover, by far one of Rush's greatest albums that's sadly overlooked.

  32. W.... S....

    A late 80s rush album...is an album with a mission 😂

  33. L.... C....

Love this song. Can play with this record, or any so good it's like I'm sitting there with the band.. Imagine what that's like?i can't explain how awesome it is or the place it takes me too... But at the ending where giddy says, we each pay a fabulous price, for our visions of paradise.. But... A spirit with a vision, is a dream.. With a mission. Always makes me tear up with great emotion and I'm always crying during playing that great end solo with Alex... It always churns me all up inside. Thanks Alex and company for teaching me to be a true guitar great! So much great work. I always said if you can play rush you can play anything. I was right!

  34. D.... W....

sophisticated lyrics , amazing music, motivational, and for 3 musicans they can rock like no other band ever. too many great songs to even name...

  35. R.... S....

That Solo at the end givee me chills every time. I never understood how much feeling could be expressed through a guitar until i heard that. Amazing

    R.... S....

Absolutely! Ever listen to David Gilmour from Pink Floyd? Amazing emotional guitar solos.

    R.... S....

    Roberr Scraver I agree...haunting melodies

    R.... S....

    Best part of the song

    R.... S....

The guitar work in Teramaze 'Broken' is very similar... exceptional use of effects, but you can just feel the passion... Or, like the sax solo in Iona 'Beachy Head'... You can feel the musicians just pour themselves out...

    R.... S....

The show of hands version is best

In order to salvage the Earth for it to be inhabitable for our great grandchildren, we need to start planting Hemp Everywhere, just like George Washington famously said about his Mt. Vernon estate. Cannnabis was the backbone of all human civilizations and they thrived for thousands of years,...how long will the USA thrive? Nature is always best for nature, man made energies are all flawed and became technologically obsolete decades ago! Once we Re-educate each other to the fact that; "Weed Kills Greed",- "As a Humanitarian Cause , (quality of life & sustainable environment) there is no down side for our society & infrastructure to Utilize Cannabis in 60,000 more sustainable improvements both Biologically & Environmentally". I believe that It is a massive "Panacea": definition = able to help with the majority of problems! Nearly all of todays Problems could have been avoided, had we utilized cannabis. Environmentally and biologically, it is our only sustainable option and salvation, research shows how imperative it is to utilize for local & global SUSTAINABILITY. You & I, since 1937, paid for the Destruction of our Earth, using Flawed energies (incl. fossil fuel) and Building Materials, when we should have used Hemp! Henry Ford was not ahead of his time, he was right on time! Someday, we will be driving carbon negative vehicles and living in carbon negative homes. Here are just a few examples (60,000 sustainable improvements) of how hemp could save our environment. Henry Fords 1941 hemp car was built with hemp and ran on hemp fuel, it was 4.7 times better for the environment than even todays Electric Car! Bruce Dietzen re-created Fords car using the frame of a Mazda Miada and proves how Clean it truly is. The Ultimate Goal is to build cars that are Carbon Negative! His Hemp car is carbon neutral. Building todays average car, takes about 10 Tons of carbon footprint to produce just one car body. When it hits the road, the average car emits about 6 Tons of carbon dioxide every Year. Bruce's hemp-car is built using 100 lbs. of hemp (woven like carbon fiber) for the body, that is Lighter than fiber glass and 10 times Stronger than steel. Henry Fords production methods involved using up to 50% plant material in All products for carbon neutrality. He wanted US all to grow Our own Food, Fuel, Medicine, raw plant materials for selling to all Industries, ect. Just like our forefathers, who used hemp as money, Ford wanted everyone to be prosperous. ------------ Didn't you know?, pot was to become the billion dollar plant , as thought , when published in 1930's Popular Mechanics magazine , and they created the marijuania tax Stamp, all Farmers required to have in order to grow Hemp, however the Stamp was impossible to get, then laws that prohibited growing Hemp have existed until recently! Bruce was featured on an episode of Jay Lenos Garage, driving his hemp-car. Jay Leno believes that "Engineers" are gonna save the world, doesn't he know about what happens to these engineers? like Fords partner, Rudolf Diesel = murdered, Ford was slandered (they could not murder him also, he was a major icon), and the list goes on, Nicola Tesla died broke, Tom Ogle= murdered, ect. Engineers did their part, the System is broke when these great engineers are Neglected for Education! Red Alert! - FIRE PROOF Hemp Houses! If we had followed H. Fords vision of Sustainability, we would have built all buildings, out of "hemp-crete". When mixed with lime, it petrifies much stronger than concrete. Superior to concrete = dries fast, stronger & lighter, mold, bug & FIRE resistant. Your house Would Not burn down if it built this way, it would still be standing just like the brick chimneys. Pesticides are not needed to grow Or inside hemp Houses, and is termite proof! Mold is from water leaks, effects millions in illnesses. Saves money by being better Insulated in both hot & cold, while also being breathable. Saving precious natural resources and massive toxic pollution from burned structures. It Purifies its environment where it grows, even from Radiation. Our infrastructures are crumbling and every state cannot afford to keep up, all because WE did NOT Utilize Potman Potman .org -- Bruce Michael Dietzen : I might add that using plant materials like hemp to make durable goods like we do at Renew Sports Cars holds a tremendous potential to remove CO2 out of the atmosphere and make profitable use of it. This will inevitably become one of the most effective ways known to man to mitigate the climate crisis. All plastics will one day be bio-based and designed to be recycled... and not biodegradable. The more we use and recycle, the more CO2 we remove from the atmosphere. GREAT LYRICS, but was never sold on the entire song !!! Love Rush, but Hold Your Fire was a Little Soft for ME. Still Beats anyone else.

  53. M.... R....

This is probably Rush's most under rated album.

    M.... R....

I will stab a motherfucker for Tai Shan.

    @arsxxmoriendi 🤣 - agreed

    M.... R....

I don’t like it when someone says, “I stopped listening to Rush when they started using all of those keyboards and synthesizers.” Maybe if I had been a teenager when 2112 came out, I might not have liked the 80’s Rush very much, but I wasn’t a teenager when 2112 came out. I was 3 I think. I became a Rush fan at the time of Hold Your Fire. I had just started high school and of course the older guys knew more about Rush than I did so I was exposed to older albums through them. I was a drummer who also played piano and I had a Roland synthesizer of my own, so I loved the 80’s Rush albums and of course the 70’s albums. I didn’t get into Roll The Bones or Test For Echo as much as Counterparts but I consider them to be good albums.

    M.... R....

Production wise it’s thin and not very riffy. Alex’s guitar is too effected and far back in the mix. The sound is altogether too processed. This is too bad because lyrically it’s among Rush’s best work.

    M.... R....

@Ultrahighgain i feel Alex shines best with less to do, he seems to do more with less.

  54. r.... ....

A spirit with a vison is a dream with a mission.

    R.... G....

They are a band , like Yes, that doesn't need an opening act .
Back in the day, it would have been great to see Rush open for Yes ...
    Their timing was ..... off

  62. B.... W....

one of their more melodic songs. Love it

  63. A.... C....

When they played this on the snakes and arrows tour in wembley arena london, i had more than a tear in my eye it was so beautiful, powerful beyond words

    A.... C....

I had the exact same feeling same year in Montreal. Just a feeling of being blessed ... shivers down my spine throughout the song. Like how lucky am I to be alive and to be hear witnessing this brilliance fed straight into my being. That’s what I was thinking!

  64. B.... F....

If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

These lyrics mean so much to me. They taught me how to enjoy the situation I'm in. To not feel bad about my life circumstances, because the people we think are great and look up to, feel the same way. Not all of us are destined for greatness, but that isn't a bad thing like we're lead to believe.

    T.... ....

I am a gifted and highly creative person and, yes, there are SO MANY times when I would gladly exchange it for something more 'sane'. Imagine times when you've tried explaining to someone about something you considered beautiful and wondrous but they just stared back, uncomprehending. Then imagine having that happen over and over and over - it's just one of the things I find depressing. Creativity and drive aren't 'great' or 'better', just... different.

  67. P.... ....

I can't make it through this song without crying from joy.

    P.... ....

haven't really cried in years. I'm way too serious.

    P.... ....

Yeah, this song has made me cry. If you're an artist... you know... and it hurts.

ALEX LIFESON DOES NOT GO BY THAT NAME, HE CHOOSES ALEX LIFESON AND IS ALSO HIS LEGAL NAME. YOU ARE VERY DISRESPECTFUL!!! 💩

    M.... K....

@BITCHY BITCH That is very true ... His stage/legal name, " Lifeson" is a semi-literal translation of his surname, "Zivojinovic"which means, "Son of Life" in Serbian ... So in my opinion it'd be nice to apologize to Milan Kolarski because they're not incorrect nor are you. It's the all caps which signifies, "yelling." All three changed their names. Alex swapped his last name or actually transl
ated it, Gary goes by , "Geddy" and Neil, "The Professor on the drum kit" his name is actually Cornelius ...

  72. S.... S....

Though this isn't their best song, this song and "Tom Sawyer" introduced me to Rush. Neil's lyrics and drumming skill are unmatched, a true legend of his time AND the future. So sad he is retiring.

  73. F.... A....

    good songs...

  74. R.... H....

R Gray I understand but they are my two favorite albums its your right to hate them ,Rock on Brother !

    R.... H....

    I do not hate them !! :)

  75. F.... ....

Rush stuck with that "Big money"".. "New World Man"... type of chorused guitar, simple drums, keys, for way too many songs on too many albums.
Once this sound infected their music they were never the same rock band.
By the time they tried to go back to their beginning sound, which is mostly Alex's guitar riffs, he was no longer able to come up with clever guitar parts, and just sounded like something from that early 90s period out of Seattle.
They even forgot how important it was for them to have really clever album covers...so, you have this red shit as an example, with "Roll the Bones" and "Snakes and Arrows" as the only 2 clever album covers they had past Permanent Waves, tho Signals was almost clever.

    F.... ....

radio played hits weren't killed by repetition such as Limelight and Subdivisions to name a few.

    F.... ....

    What astonishing horseshit

    F.... ....

Don't judge an album by its cover. They were reflections of their current state of mind, let it go.

    F.... ....

people happy with life fantastic here 😎🎶🎧

  76. 1.... ....

OK, ok I give lol :) I have made comments on other pages here that Signals is the last "good" RUSH album, but this one, after careful review and consideration is the last, for me.

    1.... ....

+1970borntorun If you like this one, Presto will grow on you. They are very similar; both are brilliant albums. Chain Lightning (Awesome solo recorded backwards... cool), The Pass, Anagram, Available Light, these have some of the best lyrics of any Rush albums. It is a very deep album. And what about Roll the Bones? After 2112, that was the album that turned me onto all of their other stuff. I love every single album and every single song in its own way. Every song either has a lyric, a solo, or a hook that grabs me. It is ALL GREAT!

    1.... ....

Well, I'll admit to there being hidden gems in Rush's catalog, the problem I have (and I'm def not the only Rush fan that feels this way) is that they slowly but surely got away from their melodic, groove-oriented roots, and in it's place they crafted a darker more industrial sound. Yeah, as a musician I get that musical evolution is necessary, but that doesn't always equate to good music.

  77. R.... G....

So now what ? Neil is retiring....and Keith Emerson is gone.......what is next ?
    I'm moving to Greenland

    R.... G....

Fucktard......only dipshits of the highest order would use that term .
Throw yourself in front of the next bus .
    just joking...........quit insulting strangers

    R.... G....

Keith & now Greg Lake gone. What an amazing group ELP was in their prime. The last time I saw RUSH at Bristow Va. 2015, I got emotional when it dawned on me that after all the times I've packup up the vehicle and set out for their shows.... this very well could be the last? It was a superb show too! Neil supposedly not well but the band was on that night! Will miss their tours no doubt after all these years.

    R.... G....

Mike Rugh Whoa, dude. Where the fuck did that come from?

    R.... G....

Hey Mike take it easy ... it has been a while .
    Take care of yourself

    R.... G....

That is a mature way to think of things ....indeed, we never know when it might be the last time

  80. R.... H....

R Gray Go fuck your self !!!!

    R.... H....

+Reginaldo Hernandez that is impossible....have a good life

  81. s.... ....

"I hear their passionate music. Read the words that touch my heart...I wish I had that instinct. I wish I had that drive."

    You do, Neil. You do...

    s.... ....

    They All Do!

    s.... ....

    Yes! he really does!

    s.... ....

Yes he does, and he's saying it for everyone in his lyrics.

    s.... ....

It's a first person narrative, not an autobiographical point of view. Obviously Neil wasn't describing himself in these lyrics!

  82. k.... ....

4:39 and after is definitely the best part.

    k.... ....

    3 minute mark..and after

    k.... ....

It's all good if you truly appreciated classic rock.

  83. R.... H....

Presto and Hold your Fire are my favorite Rush albums sure they have all the rest but I really enjoy Mr.Peary's lyrics on these two albums I'm 52yrs old and actually cried when Mr.Peart said he was retiring but all great things come to and end ,Long live RUSH !!!

    R.... H....

    +R Gray 😒

    R.... H....

R Gray I love presto- and hold your fire... and I've been to 35 shows since 83. I know lots of rush fans hate the mid late 80s rush but to me it's their most beautifully composed music... I of course love hemispheres- aftk- caress of Steele- signals all of it. the fact that they streatched their music in so many ways is possibly the best thing about the band... but I digress

    R.... H....

R Gray The only thing that sucks about Presto is its production quality.

    R.... H....

    TheCiscoKid2112 nerd

    R.... H....

I am not a fan of Hold Your Fire but I do like this song.

  84. p.... w....

"A Spirit with a Vision is a Dream with a MISSION." Great lyrics! Now try 'Wisdom of the Buddha' if you have a few minutes, folks. Its where most of Neil's inspiration arises from

One of the greatest songs from Rush and some of Neil Peart's best lyrics... Fantastic playing and production too... Hold Your Fire is my top favourite Rush album, anyway.

    M.... M....

@Marc Moingeon I love their techno-driven albums the most. Moving Pictures through this one. Signals is my absolute favorite. They really don't have any filler songs on this one.

"MIssion " isn't even one of my top 5 songs from the album!

Ode the one of the greatest bands & icons of of rock n roll history! Geddy Lee & Steve Perry from journey, have legendary voices of rock music!

  94. T.... ....

I find this quote from Geddy Lee very important for the comment section of this song:
Geddy Lee (1988): "It basically grew out of a conversation Neil and I had about the kind of people we consider ourselves to be, people who always knew what they wanted to do in their lives and always had this ambition and desire, but couldn't make a choice as to what to do. It was always very clear that we had to do what we do - whether we were a success or a failure - we knew we would always play music in some way. 'Mission' also looks sadly at the people who have never really been sure what they should be doing and have never had a clear-cut idea where to put their creative ability to reach a final, ultimate conclusion."

    gracias por compartir ....

    T.... ....

    Yesssssssssss!

    T.... ....

The last sentence is me :-(
    ...have never been really sure....

    T.... ....

They are (were) very fortunate to have that clarity, be able to do what they love and were meant to do, and make a living doing it. I don’t know what that is like, but it must be great.

    T.... ....

We all die ,that's the ultimate final conclusion!
