Rush - Lock And Key Lyrics

I don't want to face the killer instinct
Face it in you or me

We carry a sensitive cargo
Below the waterline
Ticking like a time bomb
With a primitive design
Behind the finer feelings
This civilized veneer
The heart of a lonely hunter
Guards a dangerous frontier

The balance can sometimes fail
Strong emotions can tip the scale

Don't want to silence a desperate voice
For the sake of security
No one wants to make a terrible choice
On the price of being free
I don't want to face the killer instinct
Face it in you or me
So we keep it under lock and key

It's not a matter of mercy
It's not a matter of laws
Plenty of people will kill you
For some fanatical cause
It's not a matter of conscience
A search for probable cause
It's just a matter of instinct
A matter of fatal flaws

No reward for resistance
No assistance, no applause

Don't want to silence a desperate voice
For the sake of security
No one wants to make a terrible choice
On the price of being free
I don't want to face the killer instinct
Face it in you or me
So we keep it under lock and key

We don't want to be victims
On that we all agree
So we lock up the killer instinct
And throw away the key

i suck for not paying more attention to this when it first got released ..it’s just gifted SUPERB Rush 🎸🥁 well done Professor... you will live on here 👍🥁👍

  5. J.... W....

I'm a huge Rush fan, but this song is lame.

  6. O.... F....

The music of Rush is magic, it's fantastic.

  7. t.... ....

I haven't really come around to Hold Your Fire yet, but maybe one day. Moving Pictures used to be my Rush "cut off point", but now I love up through Grace Under Pressure, and Power Windows is starting to grow on me.

  8. J.... B....

The problem with Hold Your Fire is that it was put out by Rush. In any other band's catalog, Hold Your Fire would be extraordinary. But with Rush? This is the band that gave us Farewell to Kings, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Presto, and Clockwork Angels. Oh, and Grace Under Pressure. Oh wait ... also Counterparts. Oh right ... 2112 .... I could go on.

Hold Your Fire is a great album. It's just a candle against the sun of their other work.

    J.... B....

You forgot every album before A Fairwell to Kings

    J.... B....

You are not a RUSH fan unless you like at least 75% of their catalog, including some of their 80s and 90s stuff. Otherwise, you are just a "classic rock" normie. Too many pot heads who think Caress of Stee and 2112l was their greatest work and the rest was mediocre.

  9. O.... ....

Never a big fan of this period of Rush.

    O.... ....

Orion6699 same ... but that makes us idiots looking back on it now 🥴

    O.... ....

You are not a RUSH fan unless you like at least 75% of their catalog, including some of their 80s and 90s stuff. Otherwise, you are just a "classic rock" normie. Too many pot heads who think Caress of Steel was their greatest work and the rest was mediocre.

R.I.P. Neil the best drummer in the world

Geddy's Wal tone during this era was phenomenal. I was always a bit sad he didn't revisit that bass and sound.

  13. C.... M....

Hm. Never heard this song until today. I can see why. Anyway... You know those videos that start up and you try to figure out the city, hoping it's going to be a city you've lived in, then it just ends up being a boring place like New York?

  14. C.... G....

This is a good record, but pales in comparison to Power Windows that preceded this one.

  15. J.... B....

Rediscovering this album, hadn’t heard it since I used to jam the cassette tape: brilliant album. I LOVE the “pop” of Neil’s snare & also Geddy’s bass tone, & Alex is genius as always. RIP NEIL, maestro

  16. T.... ....

I really like Alex's guitar tone on this album

  17. R.... P....

a lot of people don't realize that Geddy's heavy use of synthesizers is one of the things that enabled Rush to thrive in the 80's. Rush was always good at keeping up with the times, that's why they went back to the hard rock style when Grunge & Alternative took over in the 90's. RIP NEIL WE WILL MISS YOU FOREVER & EVER 💙

  18. m.... ....

I just talked to Tony, the director of this music video .. such a nice guy!
I've been trying to figure out what movies the movie clips are from .. so far all I have is " The Last Mile" anyone know the others ?

  19. R.... B....

Neil still had 33 good years left here... Well maybe a few really bad ones in the 90's... ♥️

Exit the WARRIOR stage left. What a legacy

  24. J.... S....

the relevancy this album possesses-the messages; motifs in and of life, humanity, sociology-this album seems more relevant nowadays in that; if people actually practiced what they preach, any of us could be better, help one another more properly. not to mention the subtly of highly industrious motives and how holding onto VALUES might save your ass.
Hold your Fire is such a heavy hitter. (not to forget the ensuing album Presto(🤯) and any other album really. Rush’s music has been my Bible.
    Rest in Pace, Neil.

  25. J.... F....

    Underrated album .

  26. T.... N....

I put Hold Your Fire in the car CD player, crank the bass to 5, and instantly it is complete work of art.

  27. E.... B....

The awsome Roland D-50 all over the place!!!

  28. O.... N....

Maybe Neil didn't want to have a killer instinct, but he certainly had a drumming instinct.... R.I.P. I'm so devastated, after all those days....

  29. J.... L....

My first rock concert ever. Rip Neil Peart!!
In my mind you are the best drummer hands done for gen x!

  30. D.... M....

What film is that at 1:45?

    T.... ....

Been wondering the same thing since around 1990

  32. W.... ....

Locking up the killer instinct keeps the killer instinct going. Throwing away the key means to prevent awareness, to lock away something and not talk about it is to allow a wound to fester.

  33. W.... ....

Being self aware of the killer instinct/violence inside is what makes it eventually go away. You have to first realize you're violent as a human. That very awareness without motive burns away the aggression.

#RipNeilPeart minute 4:38 has probably been underestimated for many fans, but this is an example that some times songs need drum solos as well as guitar solos.

just 3 guys playing this song I've been trying to figure out how I've been trying to play all of geddy lees parts and i just can't. taurus pedals, keyboard, and bass

  47. T.... ....

I think Rush was recorded this in Japan and was totally introspective but there's no bad rush record I've played she shit outta every one still learning music I think I have less patience to learn new shit but I still love the process it's all I have music is all I want in this life & the next

  48. R.... ....

    *So. GOOD.*

  49. j.... l....

I played this tape to death in my ford escort it got warped and wrapped around the pinch roller . I extracted it and put it in  another cassette case , and kept on playing it ..love the timing on these tracks ..plus the professor or drums very dense musically..amuch like vapour trails some 14 yrs later ..rock!

  50. D.... W....

Why does Alex remind me of A Flock of Seagulls during the mid and late 80s?

  51. A.... ....

The folly and greed of mortal man insures that Rush lyrics will ring true forever!

Amazing drum solo at the end of the song! The production may be a little thin sounding on this album, but it still rocks. I like that Rush was hard rock, but sounded and looked different than the "Hair Metal" bands during this era.

  58. M.... C....

This was the 1st Rush album i got. I didnt like it at 1st then rush became my favourite band ever . Great album

  59. R.... M....

I had no idea there was a video for this.

And the Alex solo's a fuckin million times better when you can see it.

  62. T.... M....

Awesome 3 man band. Fu$# modern day "music" !!!!!!!!!!!

  63. c.... ....

Aside from Lifeson's incredible solo work, his arpeggios, unique chords, and use of open strings make him such an amazing rhythm guitarist as well. Definitely in the top 5!

  64. P.... F....

    Great song! Thank you!

Love this album! It's awesome they got Willem Dafoe to stand in for Geddy in the video...

Rush 'paint pictures' sonically during this great era from them! The songs are utterly sublime and musical to the core!

  69. M.... T....

Love this song, love this era of Rush (Signals thru Presto)... I know many would disagree, but I feel like they took more chances with the song writing and sound. May not have been the most popular, but still some great songs, if you give them a chance. AND... Neil Pearl drum solo at the end... how can you not like this song!

  70. c.... ....

    great tune great vid

  71. S.... J....

I love how Rush manage to inject their own brand of humour into a serious subject.

  72. T.... S....

love how Neil tuned and made those beautiful Ludwigs speak to us.
    sadly he went to DW.

    T.... S....

    Soooooo true man

    T.... S....

@Medmac2112 The T4E and VT were the same kit, except he switched to V-drums for the electronics on VT.

    T.... S....

sgtpepper1138 I knew that, but they sounded better on T4E in my opinion. Fresher, better tuned, less worn out.

    T.... S....

@Medmac2112 I wouldn't say that it's because they were worn out, it's because 2 different drum techs were tuning it. Lorne, his last drum tech seems like a heck of a nice guy, but I don't like how he tuned his high toms, they sounded like timbales, then again, maybe that's how Neil wanted them to sound.

    T.... S....

sgtpepper1138 True that, I much preferred Larry’s approach to the high tom tuning.

  73. d.... ....

Great video- Geddy sure loves rouge...

  74. t.... O....

    Great tune

  75. K.... A....

Such a great song from Hold your fire , along with many others from this very underrated album ... brings back memories of my youth.

  76. C.... O....

"Hold Your Fire" is my favorite Rush album.

    Until I hear another one.

Then that one is my favorite Rush album.

(Well, maybe not "All The World's A Stage...")

  77. S.... T....

My dad showed me this song! Lucky to have a father who is a great musician and exposes me to great music

  78. B.... H....

    Totally underrated album. Love it.

  79. f.... ....

Considered the gayest rush album by critics and fans through out the world, but I think still had some good songs, such as force 10 and mission. Production lacked the same dynamics and punch and fullness as Power windows, despite having the same production team inexplicably. The band went for a more layered sound and Neil’s drums were less full and dynamic in the mix which was a retarded decision by the band, who have a long history of poorly produced and mixed records and DVD’s of live shows, especially the more recent ones.

  81. D.... C....

Studio drum sounds became harsher and harsher as the 80s progressed. The snare drum is too harsh.

    D.... C....

Daniel Cutting how dare you 😄

  82. g.... ....

Power windows was a much better album

  85. L.... C....

Meu Deus, como eu amo essa banda, muito maravilhoso, rush sem igual, sem palavras...

  86. A.... S....

    Holy crap that was awesome

  87. Y.... T....

Rush lost me for a while during the mid to late 80's with the techno rock keyboard driven stuff. I kept waiting for them to get back to the basics. Then it happened, PRESTO

    Y.... T....

You Too i feel ya ... but now i think i missed out ... i was listening to Winger and Faster Pussycat instead of this beautiful trio ... i hate myself for it 🥴 what a goof !

  88. L.... ....

A Song easy to get addicted to

  89. R.... ....

This is when Alex was struggling to find where the guitar fit into the music. I like this, but it isn't an album I would start a newbie off listening to.

  90. C.... P....

This is one of my least favorite Rush albums. But with that said it is still a Rush album and thus has some great songs. This is one of them. It is maybe the most underrated songs that are good on the album. Like the live versions of this album better but almost all live versions are better. There are the few exceptions like Between Sun and Moon from the Counterparts album.

  91. W.... S....

Is that red room the same one the police used ?

  92. S.... ....

The coincidence of this song being next on the list after Red Sector A, is not lost on me...

  93. K.... ....

The outro to this song is absolutely killer !!

  94. C.... D....

Honestly. Even Rush's lackluster albums are amazing! This song would've been perfect for the clockwork angels string ensemble

  95. .... ....

옛날 생각나서찾아 들었는데 참 존나 조잡하고 역같네 ㅅㅂ 각 파트가 허접한게 딱 옛날 속았구나 그수준 이 ㅅㅂ

  96. L.... J....

Rush sure sucked after Moving Pictures?

  97. J.... M....

    Wal Bass!😏👍

  98. T.... S....

    Neils outro is simply amazing.
