Rush - Digital Man Lyrics
His world is under observation
We monitor his station
Under faces and the places
Where he traces points of view
Radio and radiation
From the dancers and romancers
With the answers but no clue
He'd love to spend the night in Zion
He's been a long while in Babylon
He'd like a lover's wings to fly on
To a tropic isle of Avalon
His world is under anesthetic
His reliance on the giants
In the science of the day
He picks up scraps of information
He's adept at adaptation
Because for strangers and arrangers
Constant change is here to stay
He's got a force field and a flexible plan
He's got a date with fate in a black sedan
He plays fast forward for as long as he can
But he won't need a bed
He's a digital man

If I had to pick a favorite Rush song, this would have to be it. Tough competition from Freewill, LVS, Xanadu, and all, but this just...yes.
Killer bass and killer guitar solo
As one of my more well-versed-in-guitar-playing friends said, "Alex plays augmented demented fermented chords."
Nothing better then cruising in the 72 oldsmobile cutlass with the pioneer super tuner with the jensen speakers with this tape in the player and dont forget the Bong with some kick ass weed . take me back ,
Already this awesome drum intro ... ! :-))
Mr. Winerib is a beast
Bought this on cassette in 1991, seen in concert twice. Rock on!
Kick Ass tune from the gods . i was 16 when this album came out .Allready being a fan of rush .I was blown away and i said now this rocks .no better 3 piece trio then these guys . Extremely brilliant this whole album .
The song is so badass I love to roll the windows down and Crank It Up So everyone and their mom can hear it
Love those running bass lines!
D*amn; the build-up @03:22; can a whole band solo simultaneously?
And I don't need a bed cause I'm a digital man .
That bass/drum intro is a serious jam and might have just lengthened my life expectancy.
Rushsthetic
2019. 37 tone deaf fools don't like this. Haha. Guess they are kiss fans. Chicago
Não é atoa que o Rush foi considerada a banda mais técnica
do mundo!!!

My license plate is DGTLMAN, He plays fast forward , just as long as he can, but he wont need a bed...
Geddy is always really good, but this song in particular contains some of the most sublime bass guitar work in the history of rock. 🤘
Topped with killer guitar riffs and a stellar solo... (Not to mention the drumming...).
That bass, though.....😎
What a great fn' song...1982
Very well put
Trailer Park Boys Forever!
Saw them in 94...feels like it was 1894. ☺
Saw this tour, 1982 Toronto. Junior's first concert.
This track contains probably the most complex sequence of drumming patterns of any prog rock band.
That guitar solo gives me chils. Alex Lifeson commits something like an aggression of genius on this - not one of their better known songs. Rubato, phrasing, harmonics, vibrato, chordal expression... Also I've never heard a more brief, perfectly chosen and broad understanding of guitar textures.
Great description of Lifeson's guitar genius in this song (and the whole album).
Great song , but I really specifically love that drum fill at 1:44 right before the next verse
He's got a date with fate in a black sedan...
a trio influencing a trio both initially influenced by a trio=Police Rush Cream. BTW Police very proggy so its not that far off...strontium 90 pre police band
28 people are analog men
I can hear a massive police vibe coming from those drums.

70s and Early 80s Rush is their best stuff IMO
You never know what Alex can do
That bass guitar is getting all exercised
I love to imagine Geddy doing this with his Steinberger, but he was probably actually using a J bass.
Setting playing my geddy bass , loving feeling the moments when people called me little GED. Me and my keys and 2 sets of Taurus pedals . Love ya GED, the yes thing got me crying because, you and Mr Squire are my heroes. Digital Man , Mike Cole loves you and rush . Thank you . The analog kid
Anybody else notice the similarities between the lyrics of this song and the film "The Matrix"?
The shuffle beat from Neil is so contagious its actually danceable. Yes I hear some Police in there but whether its intentional, sort of a nod to them and why not, is up for debate.
Perfection. Repeat...PERFECTION!
Ah, that bass. And that percussion syncopation! Love this song so much!
This is a real masterclass for any serious bassist... Simply awsome!!!
Has anybody ever heard a song quite like this before? I sure as hell haven't. It's tremendous. Rush's producer, Terry Brown, didn't like this song and didn't want them to record it. Thank God they stuck to their guns.
Geddy is playing nice jazz riff.m
Is this anyone else's favorite Alex Lifeson guitar solo?
I always liked Stewart Copeland's work. Definitely a great drummer with a lot of feel and ability. But I laugh when I hear people compare him to Neil Peart. The precision with which Peart executes every strike and timing signature shift is unlike anyone else before him or since. Peart doesn't simply rap the ride cymbal, for example, with extreme rhythmic timing precision in his fills. He is also hitting the cymbal in a precise radial location to achieve the exact tone he's looking for while doing it. Most people have a tough time duplicating some of his signature fills in terms of basic rhythm and timing. Making sure they hit the cymbal at the correct location every time while interweaving snare hits - that's the kind of obsession Neil has always brought to the table and very likely why he was asked to lead the Buddy Rich tributes by Rich's family. This song in particular is loaded with timing changes that flow effortlessly from one to the next. After spending a lifetime listening to Peart's work, the closest drummer to him in style and execution has been Bill Bruford - another drummer who influenced Peart significantly.
Mind blowing intro!
The worst part is at 6:18
Lmfao its the end! 🤣 ok
I know Neil Peart is awesome, I am a drummer myself but the way Lifeson creates atmospheres and plays everything perfectly for the song,he is the most underrated guitarist in the history of rock and roll.
Geddy shines here on the bass, just brilliant.
Rush,no wonder conservative rock critics hated them, too good!
That's the thing.Rush is a band in every sense so when one of them tears it up the other two are right there with him. Perfect example is Neil's beat on this tune.Different tempos, fills . Must be a challenge for a drummer to learn this right. My fave bass sound from Geddy too.
Yep he did the same on Limelight and YYZ.
This is one smooth mother fu#£€## tune!
"He play's fast forward just as long as he can"!
Re -visiting this "chat"...heard this originally...it still works...for me,my niece and her children...truth has that....enjoy!
One of my all time favorites, gives me goosebumps.
love how Neil Peart adds in Tama wooden timbales @ 1:19
Another great album from the greatest group. I also love Hold your Fire, Vapor Trails, heck, all of them.
One of my favorite RUSH tunes! The arrangement on the Snakes and Arrows tour was excellent! Definitely one of the best solo sections! up there with Free Will,The Big Money,The Trees,Red Barchetta,Kid Gloves,La Villa to name just a few😂
CosmicJazzman Muise I totally agree. Sn&A tour was an amazing tour. One of my fave tours.
Frankly don't hear too much diff between this and my Tidal HQ version! Well done!
The man said to the guys i dont know im a digital man
This entire album kicks ass.
great music indeed
GOD TAKES ME BACK WHEN ROCK RULED THE AIRWAVES
Yeah unfortunately music today SUCKS. 😔
@R Mial there has always been sucky music, and it has always been sold in preference to the good stuff, but hey,,.,. at least we're all still here!
that snare is life
Rush was always my forvorite band iwhen I was in High school in the late 70"s and early 80"s. They"re all extremely talented musicians.
One of my favorite, excellent bass lines!

Songwriters: Neil Elwood Peart / Gary Lee Weinrib / Alex Zivojinovich
Sounds exactly like the world we live in right now but this song was written 40 years ago.
Super tight orwellian surveillance police state NWO de facto One World Government
Peart needs to fall back on the snare just a tad; he needs to incorporate the rimshots that Copeland does which would solidify the reggae feel
Gettys bass lines or Lifesons guitar solo? They are both so good in this song I dont know which is better. Of course it's impossible to leave out Neil Pert
"DigitalMan" was once one of my old AOL screennames. i was asked if i was a Rush fan. i told the person id never heard of Rush. this song was actually not where i got that name from. i came up with it after listening to that "Dreams in digital" song by Orgy.
whenever I get my paycheck
i love this song!!
Probably my favourite example of Geddy's bass playing. It's astounding.
As a bassist, I totally agree! Alex's solo, however, almost makes me cry... it's THAT good!
I am addicted to the bass in this song for sure. I'm not a bassist but I definitely have respect for the triplets and as @rationalmuscle said, the swing in his playing. Phenomenal!
I've just started playing bass and that bassline during the interlude is the most fun thing to play ever.
Yep. I've been playing bass for over 30 years and this line still confounds me. I've got a lot of it almost in the bag, but can never quite get to the point of saying I've mastered it.
Yeah YYZ was the first RUSH song on bass I learned but I'm a guitar player.
So I tend to play bass like a guitar but YYZ was relatively easy for me but Digital Man?
I'm a rush fan but never heard this one. Wow awesome.....Getty really shines in this song
Lee and Lifeson - can it get any better than this?
Forgot Peart...lol!
Lee, Lifeson and Peart
Geddy Lee, the bass master general.
THIS IS SIMPLY ONE OF THE GREATEST
I love The Police influence they got for this song.
Pearl's drumming is totally awesome. just really on the top of his game on this album.
William Moran *Peart
That BASS .....
I like the drum hop at 4:48...
Dammit, I need more drums. 20 pieces isn't enough....
Michelle M I know I feel naked when I'm playing a single bass drum set.
I think this is Niel's isolated and private personality. He surrounds himself with drums and makes love to them or pounds the hell out of them.
By far the most underrated Rush song of all time.
James Ni I believe that award goes to "Kid Gloves"
Very well could be. Its right there or near the top. This album is they're most underrated
Gotta be one of the best guitar solos ever.
Yes it is!
Within the context of the best guitar, best bass, and best drums. Unlikely to be topped for a long long time...
The song obviously lent itself to some killer bass lines!
The lyrics to this song are so subtly interesting.

love the start of this song base and drums making love
Neil Peart sounds like he is not as busy on this album which is cool. He is still one of my favorite drummers however.
Yeah?? I always thought the drums were very busy on this album
I can hear Walking On The Moon in this great song. Copeland is the unsung hero of his era with The Police. Yup, this is amazing stuff.
I'm new to Signals but man do I love Analog Kid. Now I'm listening to Digital Man and I'm loving it.
The Weapon and Subdivisions are also among my favorites Songs of this album
Craig Roberts I wasn't hip on this album til about a year ago. idk why but I didn't like it much! crazy right! I can't get enough of losing it right now, epic. digital man, new world man all amazing!
This album changed my life and opened my mind to musical possibilities that I couldn't have imagined yet. I was 13 yrs old when it came out. The guitar playing literally gives me goose bumps. This was and still is my favorite album of theirs.
Those are great songs, as is Subdivisions, but New World Man is really annoying.
New to Signals??!! Well sad and happy for you! Sad you haven't been able to enjoy it for the last 36 years like i have!! And happy that you can enjoy it now!! :-)
4 people don't understand (basic) digital technologies.
Greg Holman Everything is so digital today that the graceful audio of analog is all but a lost sonic relic
1:38 0:22 wow that bass
Great song. How come Andy Summers and Copeland are playing on a Rush track
Sting shit his pants the first time he heard this - just like the rest of us
Yes, we get the joke but in reality, the drumming is too compositional to be Copeland. While there are undoubtedly some Copeland influences, there's so much patented Peart playing on this. Either way, it's a win-win.
I used to pull the night shift cleaning at McDonalds in Napa California when i was 17 this album was just cut brand new. the walkman cassette player had just come out and i used to ride my 10 speed bike across town late at night listening to this amazing album from Rush on the way to work every night. great times man lol.
Real music..m
@Ultimate_Savage - Wow, that's a cool little story. Kinda wish I'd have experienced that too
Damn right.
Of course, muthafukkas will be listening tp this shi! hundreds of years from now traveling to to the stars ( or just simmering on Earth)...
Love that story ultimate Savage thanks!
Best drum intro to a song EVER!!!!
I'm also fond of the drum intro for Nocturne. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYjhcoBh7-Y
Man American Idol 4ever dees Mother's F of another planet in my galaxy Have Figure da Power of it. €£
The mix of the bass in that drum sets it all off. Its nearly perfect.
4.11, One of Alex's best!! \m/
That's so good it makes me cry. A masterpiece.
