Rush - Chemistry Lyrics

Signal transmitted
Message received
Reaction making impact
Invisibly

Elemental telepathy
Exchange of energy
Reaction making contact
Mysteriously

Eye to I
Reaction burning hotter
Two to one
Reflection on the water
H to O
No flow without the other
Oh but how
Do they make contact
With one another?

Electricity? Biology?
Seems to me it's Chemistry

Emotion transmitted
Emotion received
Music in the abstract
Positively

Elemental empathy
A change of synergy
Music making contact
Naturally

One, two, three
Add without subtraction
Sound on sound
Multiplied reaction
H to O
No flow without the other
Oh, but how
Do we make contact
With one another?

I can think of no other band in which the drummers parts are as integral to the structure and completeness of the song than Rush. Every drum fill is not just a drum fill, it’s part of the songs DNA

  3. P.... G....

why dont. play never live , awesome amazing song RUSH is Soundratrck of my life RUSH RULES!

  4. R.... T....

    This whole album is amazing

  5. R.... T....

I fucking love this criminally underrated Rush song!

  6. S.... S....

Like the band itself, the Signals album just looks better and better over time. They will always be the standard by which I judge all other bands.

    i LUV rap.

  8. K.... S....

Not sure why I like the song. Maybe because I think in my mind the guitar is “crying” out it’s 6 notes

  9. E.... R....

My first favorite in my top ten ..super duper thoroughly OUTSTANDING ...Thank You for your soothing mind therapy through my Depressional times-so inspirational ..Awesomely well done...I feel like a Molson golden..my fave

One of my fav song from my fav band when I was a teenager! After Signals, Grace under Pressure came with a colder sound, not exactly the same vibe. I saw them in concert about 5 times, when the ticket prices were still affordable. Great shows! Memories... "although it's just a memory, some memories will last forever" (Lakeside Park).

    How goes it, Gordo? :-)

  22. H.... R....

Could never figure out why Geddy quit using the Rickenbacker after this album, the bass tone on this is fantastic, that growl and chime, so beautiful, and melds perfectly with the atmospheric sound of Lifeson's guitar.

  23. A.... V....

I can almost hear the first time i heard it

  24. C.... S....

What a song from a great album all killer no filler on this love countdown too and the rest love live rush

  35. S.... J....

Such a classic song. Signals is an underrated classic. Got me through my high school years. Subdivisions was my underdog anthem. Thanks fellas!

    S.... J....

@Steve Jay the only reason Signals is underrated is that it was overshadowed by Moving Pictures. Perhaps they should have waited a few more months before releasing it.

  36. A.... C....

In my chemistry class i was doing my assignment from the book and one question was "what is chemistry" so I wrote down the song lyrics from this song and two days later my teacher pulled me aside and asked me the question of what is this supposed to mean I simply said that it was a song and he was astonished when he asked what band it was and I said Rush and he looked at me and told me that he was surprised to see a metal head like me in today's young crowd😀😀😀

  37. J.... M....

Perfect song indeed..At least I used to think so..Sad now.. Only a few get it now.. More aware at 51.. Here

  52. S.... S....

In 1982, if they had MP3 players, I would have just downloaded 'Subdivisions' and missed out on all of the other AMAZING TRACKS on the 'Signals' Album like this one! Young people today are being denied the joy of discovery that came with PHYSICAL ALBUMS, and it's hurting new music because we've RETURNED to the dark ages of SINGLES that the Beatles freed us from with 'Sgt. Pepper'!! SAVE MUSIC > BUY ALBUMS!!

    S.... S....

I hear you. Unfortunately it's the same conundrum most prog bands had to deal with in the US (and in Canada as well, so I hear.) with the ridiculously short time limit allowed for any given song ( 2.5 minutes IIRC). This limit was designed to allow for more advertising time on AM radio Such constraints practically insured that only very few prog bands got any air time in North America until no-time-limit FM stereo music stations started to dominate the airwaves and those focusing on "artsy" prog played Rush, Kansas and a handful of lesser known US and Canadian prog bands, along with classic prog from the British Isles. Those who claim there was some sort of "conspiracy" against Rush should perhaps get more acquainted with the history of music radio in the US. Rush were victims of the time limit. They weren't the only ones of course, but are the best known example due to their popularity in the US.

    Magnífic drums!!!

    M.... B....

Indeed, and they sound good too ;)

  55. I.... M....

What's the best part of this tune? Watching Rush perform it live in 1984!!! Yes, millennials, this was a ploy to make you jealous!!
    RUSH IS FOREVER AWESOME!!!

  56. R.... R....

thank you. i appreciate it. I love it when the guitar kicks in and it's slices in like a Vaulkrie flying through the horizon. such haunting memories from my youth

one of Alex Lifesons best guitar solos ever. top notch album.

    D.... 5....

    for sure

    D.... 5....

Alex creates a very memorable solo here. Takes his artistry to another level!

    D.... 5....

O man I just came here to comment exactly that!

    D.... 5....

Such an underrated solo as well... many of their synth era solos are vastly underrated (Emotion Detector, Kid Gloves, etc), and I think Signals may be my favorite Rush album for solos.

  62. r.... a....

great album...never understood the cover though....explain...

    r.... a....

roy ashman a fire hydrant is a "signal" to the dog to pee on it

    r.... a....

cheers ..yes that is a signal in effect....mmm hoping it was a bit more mysterious than that....still brilliant though....

    r.... a....

The red hydrant is a warning signal. Red always comes forward in any image. Dalmatian's spots warn other animals that they are dangerous (historically). It's about signals that we sense, and sub-consciously understand.

  63. c.... u....

this is the unknown gem on this album.....even the hardcorest of rock elite find this a deep cut.....its by far the best cut on this album ....bar perhaps countdown

  64. E.... T....

One of the best bands of all time !!
    Rush...Ave!!!

  67. C.... C....

    rush is the poop

  68. R.... R....

This song has it all...perfect emotion, tons of atmosphere, a solo that sends chills down my spine and still that straight forward rock motion! Only Rush baby!

  69. j.... ....

Great song to listen to when taking off on a flight.

  70. L.... C....

Best Rush album in the 1980s.

  71. R.... M....

Only a genius can do a solo like this. Long life to Alex!

  72. e.... ....

    THAT. SOLO.

  73. C.... G....

This song is one of Rush's most overlooked and under rated songs from the 1980's.  I will admit that it took me a long time to realize the Greatness of this song.  But, at least I did.

  74. R.... C....

If only Rush had a decent drummer ;)

    R.... C....

Richard Cardone is that a joke?

    R.... C....

Richard Cardone I really hope that is a joke.

  75. C.... K....

Was very lucky to see all Rush tours between '77 and '85, at both London Gardens, and Maple Leaf Gardens. What memories...the white carpet on stage, and so much more. Thanks for the memories GordonYYZ.

  76. C.... Y....

my standout. what a traveling song. a must have on repeat 4 to 6x on road trips. I also was on acid playing & FEELING red barchetta as a youth

  81. L.... C....

The Best Album Rush made in 1982. this album said heres the new sound of rush for the 1980s& Beyond man!!!!!!😀😀😀😀😀

  82. c.... ....

Signals is such a great album.

    c.... ....

As the years pass I have come to realize the "Signals" is pound for pound as good as "Moving Pictures". Track by track, it is as good, as progressive, as hard and as masterfully played. I had for years ascribed it as a "synth album" but will now revise that thought as "Signals" being an ABSOLUTE MONSTER of a rock album. Almost Top 10 of all time for me. Maybe #11. Yes, it's that good. LISTEN TO IT AGAIN. AND AGAIN. and you will agree.

    c.... ....

@Nirav K Shah The more prominent synth really just layers well on top of the rest of the sound. My favorite Ged bass tone on this album by far. I love the mid-late 80s wal but it's still a close second for me.

    c.... ....

Nirav K Shah Our brains have no choice but to change our perspective of things the longer we're around. Plus, Peart's lyrics are always more relatable the older and wiser we become. They were ahead of their time.

    c.... ....

I just realized how closely related the music of both Rush and post-Gabriel Genesis truly is. Almost like you could swap Phil for Geddy and the result would be the same. Both bands are huge faves of mine.

    c.... ....

My favourite Rush album by a country mile.

  83. V.... A....

    Um orgasmo musical...

  84. d.... ....

I think Terry Brown should be in the Hall of Fame as a producer..... every album he produced for Rush is an absolute masterpiece...,,

    d.... ....

Screw the hall of fame. Alex's speech during his induction says it all.

    d.... ....

derbystardom yes! TB definitely produced their best (ie, my favorite) albums...there’s a hell of a great sound here.

    d.... ....

He hated digital man at first

    d.... ....

I disagree. It was time to move on and they made many great albums after Signals.

  85. M.... 1....

    Fuck. YEAH.

  86. f.... ....

freaked when I bought this album! love this song!

  87. S.... W....

Still amazes me today how many "professional" musicians can't go between 6/8 and 4/4 easily as these guys could.....

    S.... W....

Where is the 6/8? It must be so seamlessly integrated into the song that I can't find it...

  88. J.... ....

    "Emotion transmitted, emotion received"

  89. D.... H....

I knew a Dalmatian named "Spike", Signals by Rush he did like, and one day, being a jerk, he ate my chemistry homework, so I pissed on the seat of his bike.

I remember listening to this in my 1966 Plymouth Belvedere 2 door hardtop, I put a used tape deck in it and some cheap 6"x9"s and a super cheap "mustang" brand EQ amp. It all sounded like crap but I thought I was king of the world. I wasn't old enough to have my drivers license yet so I just sat in the driveway and listened to the future.
