This song isn't about Scotland, and the band and location being Scottish is completely irrelevant to the meaning of the words, so it seems somewhat odd that the comments only seem to express sentiment or patriotic fervour. In fact I wonder how many people would be so keen on it if they actually understood the lyrics..?

donnie munro's voice was always too sugary for me - thats why i dont like the old versions of many songs - and why do you think they rerecorded so many old songs with Bruce? he has a better voice - flat and all

My best friend and her partner and I were meant to meet up at this event but their car broke down and my Mum took ill so I didn't make it. This was played at her funeral - I don't care who sings it, it's the lyrics that count.

Bruce simply slays it on this one - I've loved Runrig since first hearing them in 1986.  It's great that they have a new strong singer - and that he's from Nova Scotia in Canada is just icing on the cake :-)

If you really want to see them do it soon, they have some shows coming up next summer in Germany and Denmark but the boys are getting ready to call it quits pretty soon. Bruce is still pretty young but the some of the boys are getting up there, can't blame them for wanting to take it easy and enjoy retirement, they've been at it since 1973.

Donnie is way way above Bruce in the singing of this song. Note that the song has been altered in timing to accomodate the more limited vocal range available to Bruce. Timing is everything in music. Does not do it for me at all . Not that it matters anymore ! Just sayin.

Only recently discovered this band, living here in U.S. Sad to discover they are closing shop. Some of these tunes I cannot get enough of, and will hypnotically listen to them over and over. Have not found a real clunker in the collection. Truly great ambassadors for the Scots.

utubr10 they’re stopping as a band next year with the last concert August 18th. 😞 But there’s still tickets to get for some of the shows before that I think in England, Germany and Denmark. Runrig will Liv on in our hearts, and as each of the band members will still do some kind of playing they’re still worth following.
This is one of my favorites especially in Bruce’s version.

I've been there twice when I was in the US Navy. Flew down from Keflavik Iceland on P3s, landed at the RAF Base in Kinloss and then hitchhiked to Inverness to see Loch Ness. An unbelievable country.. my favorite of all. Well, maybe not the food, but the people and the land.. oh yea. My family is from the Stewart line.

I've just recently discovered these guys. I am so impressed and am an instant fan. I have to admit of thinking about Woodstock, looking at all that rain and mud and the togetherness of that crowd. That was a soul stirring event for those people, I have no doubt.

Such a good song, reminds me of a time before things went a wee bit wrong in my family, good times :)

It makes me sad to see any thumbs down on this song because I suspect the majority of the thumbs down come from fans of the great Donnie Munro. Whether you think Donnie sang it better or not I just don't see how you can think Bruce's version deserves a thumbs down.

I like the softness of the voice of Bruce more... Sorry, but true. There's no better Runrig-singer for me than him. Different people, different opinions.

@wynyardjohn Agreed. I have listened to and loved this song by about 10 singers now. I loved the version by Skerryvore particularly. However, I still love it best by Runrig with Donnie and Bruce 1a and 1b or vice versa.
