Rufus Wainwright - The Maker Makes Lyrics

One more chain I break
To get me closer to you
One more chain does the maker make
To keep me from bustin' through

One more notch I scratch
To keep me thinkin' of you
One more notch does the maker make
Upon my face so blue

Get along, little doggies
Get along, little doggies

One more smile I fake
And try my best to be glad
One more smile does the maker make
Because he knows I'm sad

Oh Lord, how I know
Oh Lord, how I see
That only can the maker make
A happy man of me

Get along little doggies
Get along little doggies
Get along

You don't need to be gay to recognize that BBM is the most honest love movie ever. It's just a movie about a man who falls in love, and in the name of that love he gives it all, even his life. I'm a straight guy, but never before have I watched a movie with a love message as pure and honest as this one.

This song reminds me of such a horrific time. Horrific spooky time in my life. But on a Sunday afternoon. On CBC radio.
It was okay. A long nap. It was all okay. The window was still there to absorb the sun. I used to know Rufus.
When I was a teenager. Waking to this song.. My friend was deadly asleep on the other side of the couch. I wanted him 2 wake up. I was sick.
Back to the..... It was a few moments of safety and calm not alone. But completley alone. Was a long time ago. Scary time ago.

    Who is Jack and Ennis?

    J.... G....

Janet Gilbert The two main characters of the amazing movie Brokeback Mountain, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllehaal

    J.... G....

So, you are saying you are a punking homo? What if I just like the song? Ironically, hetero, I feel like I am less than in your eyes when I proclaim it. I thought you guys were persecuted. I still don't care what you do in your bedroom or on your kitchen table. Just allow me to like the song.

    J.... G....

Janet Gilbert I don't really get your comment. Did you write it for me? I just responded to your questions.
My name refers to pumpkins and to the begining of my name.
    I'm a strait person.
You can just like the song. I don't care why you listen to it, you asked a question and I responded, that's all.

  22. J.... G....

    P.S. I'm really not Janet.

  23. J.... G....

Is there a musician out there that can lay down the harp tabs for this song that would follow the vocal? Please? [email protected]

  24. D.... T....

I think we have to think back when music was hidden or not played for many reasons. In the day of one of the greatest's men that would bring his music and message was ignored, Yes it was! His music has lived on for so many years now, why? because people could relate to him. Most people they still relate to his music today and will for years to come. So many musicians learnt from him as they did from the blues In the Early days. Bob Marley (yes its him I refer to) had to knock down walls for his music/message to get out there and thank God he did. If you check back on some of Bobs early days (video films about his life) you will see that people around him that believed in his music and that it was being suppressed. So they took things into there own hands to stop this discrimination / political motives to stop his music . There is a quote in one of the videos about his life, that the people around him took offence to this injustice. They would visit the DJ's of that time with baseball bats and in a gentle way persuade them to play his music for the people :-) Well it worked and we are all richer for it! Now these kind of actions would land you in a whole load of trouble in this day, but the artist of today must still be as strong ! if someone is not opening the door fully before they dismiss you, then jam your foot into that door until you are listened to and then the public can see if what they like to hear! Artist of today (you Rufus) have a duty to allow all people to hear your music, and if it's taken by the people as music they want to hear then you know that shoving your foot (baseball bat :-) ) was more than worth it. You see music evolves and the next generation learn form the last (They will make it their own) based on the strong culture of real musicians and singers. I don't want to see the next generation of music listeners being brought up on senseless violent songs just to be gangster, or 10 year olds being brain washed that the people that they look up to, should shake their ass and ware next nothing to be cool. You guys has as more responsibility as the politicians (believe it or not) the music that youngsters listen too, shapes their lives. So why this rant? because I want to see people like you Rufus putting that foot/baseball bat in the door and make sure music goes they way it should, a . spiritual experience, a loving experience, a thought provoking experience, Music that makes you grow . and the next generation of musicians learn from and make it their own. If the good musicians don't do this, then the youth are doomed to trash and at times violent music. And we all know that the youth listen music way before they will ever consider listen to any politicians. Its a heaving burden to carry I know

First thing I have know idea what the comment's below are on about.Jack I swear?? how knows! My comment is where have they been hiding this guy!!! Why is this artist not all over the charts.. I wonder if the music industry can be this blind, my answer is yes! To you the Music industry STOP feeding what you think sells in that week of culture, we are being deprived of some great music and you are stunting the growth of real talent and what the next generation will use as their marker for great music and continue learning from the greats! Rufus if you read these posts I'm not sure? you must take this industry on, and let people all over your music. It's well over due that we are feed what the industry think we want and let the real artist take the stage. Love your music

  39. A.... R....

I adore You, Mr. Wainwright. Thank You for your sensibility. Thank You for your sensitivity. Thank You...

  40. M.... ....

    Sounds like Thom Yorke.

    M.... ....

It reminded me of him too.

    M.... ....

Dude, literally everything sounds like Thom and Radiohead because Radiohead has pretty much done every variation of alternative music there is. I don’t know if Rufus is a Radiohead fan or the other way around but Rufus and Radiohead are my favorite music artists of all time. (1. Radiohead 2. Rufus Wainwright 3. Sigur Ros)

  41. j.... t....

Ledger's death made this movie impossibly painful.  Following his life, you could see how he struggled with his sexuality and unfortunately, it ended in the Hollywood fashion.  As a gay man, it is beyond words sad to see such a promising light extinguished so soon and so needlessly.  RIP, HL.

  42. P.... ....

CBC Radio One brought me here...

  43. T.... ....

    Oh...lovely!

  44. V.... C....

Brokeback Mountain is devastatingly sad as is, but with Ledger's passing it has become almost impossibly devastating for me to bear. You see, when I watch a film where a character passes away, I desperately try to console myself with the thought that the actor himself is actually alive and well. I doubt I'm the only one who employs this technique. It's like a defence mechanism against sadness, for those who, like me, are greatly affected by the stories told in films. Only, with this film, it no longer works. The thought that Jack Twist was only a fictitious character and that Gyllenhaal is thankfully alive and well is of great consolation of course. However, the thought that Ledger passed away at such a tragically young age is heartbreaking. What an amazing man with so much to give, of which he had already given much during his relatively brief but truly brilliant career. Forever loved and greatly missed. RIP <3

    V.... C....

    Brokeback mountain scared me

  47. N.... K....

    Get along, little doggies...:(:)

    N.... K....

Do you understand the significance of this line in this song? It's the only part of this beautiful song that I don't understand. : /

    N.... K....

I think it's about how so many people often just do what are told to do by society, not following their own instincts and beliefs, but the "herd instincts"

  48. N.... .....

    Jack fuking Twist...
    miss you guys :(

  49. T.... ....

Wow.  What a beautiful performance of a beautiful song.  Rufus has incredible control of his voice and knows just how to use it.

  50. x.... ....

    nobody's business, but us.

  51. M.... N....

Today is the 10th anniversary of the premiere of Brokeback Mountain and I am looking back for memory with this movie, start with this first :'(

  52. D.... W....

Dude breaks my heart every time I hear this.

  53. s.... ....

Oh but when he looks at you when he sings...lord i get the chills😍😍i wish i knew how to quit you rufus..

  54. M.... K....

Here I am alone, thinking of Jack and Ennis, the final scene with the shirts...and am crying....

    M.... K....

Yeah, the father was a duck. But, his Mom was sweet

    M.... K....

Martin Kennedy what movie is that?

    M.... K....

brokeback mountain, it's an amazing film. this song makes me cry so hard just listening to it, it was a beautiful ending credit song for that movie

    M.... K....

Hats off to Ang Lee!! Brilliant Ending. If you are Human, if you have feelings, your heart would fill with remorse & sadness at that closing scene.
Irrespective of one's sexual orientation, if a scene depicts moving representation of Love, it is bound to influence, bound to stir our souls...

  55. U.... E....

    jack fucking twist! :(

  56. A.... G....

Deeply moving! There is some universal truth about it that will make this song endure.

  57. J.... S....

A nice touch that the background flashes white only at the end when he calls to the Lord by name, and one more flash in his final reference to The Maker.

  58. L.... ....

    Exquisite!

  59. A.... F....

    Devastatingly beautiful. Wow

  60. B.... D....

I just wish I could understand all.....the words in his songs.  My favorite....which blew my pants off....was Beautiful Child!!  .......Would like to know the lyrics, though.

    B.... D....

+Barb Donnelly "Beautiful Child" was the first one of his songs that blew my pants off, too. Been hooked ever since. As far as I can tell, "Beautiful Child" is about the pleasure/pain of artistic creativity ("room filled with toys"), the challenge of facing down the weight of history ("these small goddamn hills"), and the tyranny of public morals ("burning crosses....pin the blame on you, and myself").

  61. S.... O....

the song make me sad....and Rufus voice was perfect match to the song .
How can i don't love this......the song and the film.

  62. A.... ....

    Absolutely love this song.

    Just ugh.

  63. C.... ....

    jack, i swear...

    C.... ....

+CodeDarkBlue what that is mean. idon't get it.

    C.... ....

it could be a swear, to chase broken dreams in his memory one day to live with jack , or it could be a swear for future, to be real and not to hide his homosexuality. we´ll never know.

  64. P.... D....

He's on tour don't miss it!

  65. .... ....

Anyone who was ever forced to be away from someone they love must surely love this song. It expresses with simplicity and elegance that painful feeling. I love it.

  66. E.... C....

Dit vind ik zo wonderschoon. Rufus I love you
    Ellen

  67. N.... C....

    cool song and singer!

  68. m.... ....

I hope Rufus is grateful to his parents for not only his genetics, but the rigorous training that his father dragged him through.  It has made him into something amazing.

    m.... ....

I read that his father divorced his mother and left he and his sister when Rufus was about 3. Then they moved up to Canada, and he didn't spend much time with his dad. They weren't sharing custody. So, how could that be?

  69. V.... E....

How this song got passed over for an Academy Award nomination is a mystery.

    V.... E....

@peloquin1979 There's truth and power in artistic inspiration. People are generally afraid of that kind of Truth, because it reminds them that they are not in charge of the universe. Its why music scores like "Rudy" and "Unforgiven" aren't nominated for Academy Awards. Too much "secular divinity" in them. It scares people.

    V.... E....

@peloquin1979 Probably because homophobes wouldn't understand (hear) perfection if it hit them over the head with a 2 X 4.

    V.... E....

As the second music cue in the end credits, it wasn't eligible. According to the Academy Rules for the Original Song award (Rule 15) it has to be either "used in the body of the motion picture or as the first music cue in the end credits."

    V.... E....

    @kundry07 That's too bad.

    V.... E....

    @Vera Evans
To be clear,  the "Academy Awards",  mean nothing.  They're a reflection of a popularity contest and the contestants are vapid and empty of truth and meaning.
I can't even recall any of my favourite movies/music even being nominated!  But that's the thing-  the important, honest and truthful things of this world are ignored...  while the dull ignorant,  and ponderous BS,  are 'promoted'.
    But knowing this,  is  half the battle.  ;-}

  70. W.... B....

I have to say that the very first time I heard this song, on the soundtrack to Brokeback Mountain, I thought that what I was hearing was the voice of a very deep voiced Black Woman!  It was only after I researched into the very complex life of Rufus Wainright that I could actually understand how I could have thought that!  As it was sung on that soundtrack, it was true artistry!

    W.... B....

Do I sense a Nina Simone fan? No? Haha, either way, that's true

    W.... B....

same here , i thought he is women :)

  71. M.... K....

I will be at SomervilleTheatre, June 18th YES!

  72. B.... D....

    I love this song :3

  73. E.... K....

This is my new favourite song - Rufus is a genius like no other.

  74. j.... ....

Absolutely love this song. Warm, heart felt and relevant. Brokeback Mountain was so beautifully sad especially knowing that Heath isn't here to celebrate it.

  75. K.... K....

"One more notch on my face so blue"? This is almost as good as "newborn hay"! Don't get me wrong -- I don't care much what the lyrics are when he's singing. But boy howdy. Did he write this song?

  76. M.... K....

Thank You Mr. Wainwright for being the special person you are and a great Musical genius as well!!!

  77. M.... K....

    right on!!

  78. M.... R....

    You're so right.

  79. M.... W....

    Awesome!!!

  80. s.... ....

    keep tryin'

  81. D.... N....

No. No, it's not. Just shows you have great taste. ;-)

  82. J.... C....

"One more chain I break, to get me closer to you. One more chain does the maker make, to keep me from bustin' through". So true. Frankly the saddest song ever written.

  83. B.... ....

A very simple music video... yet, the music fits in and the I can see the emotion through Rufus. This reminds me of Someone Like You by Adele.

  84. b.... p....

The opening shot really reminds me of Valentina Igoshina's performance of Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu.

  85. S.... W....

Rufus' sexuality is relevant because his haunting voice and mysterious look make a hetero woman melt into a puddle. Is it wrong to be smitten by a young, beautiful gay man? I hope not...

  86. V.... ....

Hey, did you guys hear about this Rufus Wainwright guy? How he's probably the greatest singer and songwriter of his generation, but all people talked about on his Youtube videos was his sexuality and not his remarkable talent? I feel like I've seen that somewhere before.

  87. W.... ....

    Great point!

  88. s.... ....

This is a hauntingly beautiful song crafted by a master lyricist and poet.

  89. w.... ....

Very wise comment mate! People are people, judge 'em for that and that only!

  90. w.... ....

Good point RaverRasta. However I meant it as an analagy - how discrimination is illogical, rather than left-handedness and being gay are similar. Also I don't think the survival of the species is in much danger! From what I've heard from gay friends, it's something you know as soon as you know that you can be attracted to another human. BTW Bart Simpson is another lefty, so you're in great company!

  91. D.... ....

Apparently 124 people can't do simple math

  92. A.... P....

It seems that is really hard to just listen to the song, and stop with stupid comments.

Everybody knows that he's gay, but it doesn't matter right now. It also doesn't matter if one is homofobic, and the other is an homo protector. People, Rufus is a singer! Let's listen to his music. Let's admire him for his music. Let's love him for his music. Just stop labeling people.

    Get along little doggies!

    A.... P....

Thank you ♡ I love Rufus for many reasons, his voice is amazing, he is gorgeous, and his talent is mind blowing. What more needs to be said. ☆♡☆

  93. J.... N....

That's the most beautiful sad song I cry every time

  94. M.... B....

    Wonderful music. That's what matters.

  95. e.... c....

Freddie Mercury was also openly gay and you don´t see Queen videos full of racist comments, why is that? Because he is a legend? His mustache? I think Rufus sings better, I think he takes better care of his health and I think youtube is filled up to its top with fucking haters, racist, ignorant idiots, very few people knows this guy`s music and you have to ruin it just talking nonsense? C´mon, the day we learn to get along is the day we´ll evolve

  96. E.... ....

Ohh he's just counting the ones that are openly gay and those who are in the closet also...kinda fair :)
