Rufus Wainwright - I Don't Know What It Is Lyrics

I don't know what it is
But you got to do it
I don't know where to go
But you got to be there
I don't know where to fall
But I know that its comfortable where
I don't know where it is

Putting all of my time
In learning to care
And a bucket of rhymes
I threw up somewhere
Want a locket of who
Made me lose my perfunctory view
Of all that is around
And of all that I do

So I knock on the door
Take a step that is new
Never been here before
Is there anyone else here too
In love with beauty
Playing all of the games
Who thinks three's company
Is there anyone else who wears slightly mysterious brusies
I don't know what it is

Take a lookin around
At friendly faces
All declaring a war on far off places
Is there anyone else who is through with complaining about what's
Done unto us

So I knock on the door
And I am on a train
Going god knows where to
To get me over
To get me over

Give me heaven or hell
Calais or Dover

I was hoping the train
Was my big number
Stopping in Santa Fe and the Atchison-Topeka
Though I'm chugging along, put away by the crossing hand
We'll be heading for Portland, or Limburgh or Lower Manhattan
Find myself running around

I don't know what it is so get me over
I don't know what it is so get me over
I don't know what it is so get me over
To get me over
You gotta do it.
You gotta be there.

Splendid tune, I don’t know what it is about it....

  3. r.... p....

verry, nice number great voice love it

  4. C.... G....

This song reminds me of the fall. It reminds me of years in my past. It reminds me of falling love with a beautiful woman. We had a great love affair that unfortunately ended. But this music reminds me of that time. And that’s just fine by me.

It is only within the darkness of the storm that the angels voice can be heard off the echo's of a broken Moon.

  6. B.... G....

I liked this song when it first came out but I found it over produced to the point of opulence. The version of just Rufus and his piano is far superior.

Rufus is like the best Belgian chocolate; you don't rush it, you sit down, savour the moment, slowly eat it and as the rich taste fills your mouth you think you're in heaven, then when you're finished, you think: Phew! that's ever so rich, I had better not take any more or I will make myself sick, so you wrap it up, put it in your pocket, till the next time...

I understand Wainwright has been around for a pair decades. I also understand that I didn't gravitate toward him twenty years ago, not because I wasn't ready but because I sensed I'd really need him to be something new in 2018. And he is. For me he is an utterly new artist who is making my heart race. That hasn't happened since I found Dylan in my teens and Sarah Vaughan in my twenties and. From 30 till today (54) that particular heart has lain dormant, believing it was deceased. // p.s. In the comment below, "surly proof" is of course a typo -- which is kind of a shame. I love the idea of surly proof.

Testify!! I have the same physical reaction when i listen to this man. He is incredible.

My friend David speaks of poems that take the top of your head off. For me, this means a lot of Emily Dickinson's poems. The feeling I get from some Wainwright songs is more like my chest is being opened (with some, but not enough anesthesia) for heart surgery performed by a surgeon with one shining hand and one dark cloudy hand. For example, in the refrain of "Poses" those whole notes on "You said, "Watch my head about it" that collapse into that pitiful series of "Oh nos" -- brilliant, absolutely brilliant. // I wonder about the demographics at a Wainwright concert. I really hope the audience is not all gay men like me. Still it also has to be said that there is a personal dimension that comes into play if, like me, you grew up longing in vain for the radio to sing love songs clearly addressed to you and that guy in your class that you had a crush on. It was not just a random mishearing when at the age of 10 I heard "knocking on Kevin's door" instead of "knocking on Heaven's door." // https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94gQrv-gWs4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEj55WyLzLg&t=3s

one of the best songs ever written

    K.... K....

I cannot concur with this sentiment enough to express my wholehearted agreeability with its robust correctness.

And the Harvey girls reference is amazing and only a true Judy fan would recognize the nod!! "I was hoping the train was my big number docking the Santa fe and the Atchison Topeka"

    K.... K....

    I always loved that reference!

  19. S.... A....

Rufus Wainwright's music is surly proof that the mainstream will never acquire a taste for good music.
