Ross, Diana - Some Things You Never Get Used To Lyrics

Some things you never get used to

It's the same routine of getting up every morning
And putting on a smile
But underneath there's another person
Who can't find a reason to make living worthwhile

Ah, another day to get through
Without the love that once was mine
Sometimes I think my heartaches come to an end
And then something brings them all back again
Like wanting you and like having you
I'll never get used to

I've gotten used to not listing
For familiar sounds you used to make
Now I'm trying to get out of the habit
Of calling your name first thing when I awake
Look here !

It's like a child's first step
I have to learn to walk all, all over again
'Cause you were always there if I should fall
And now there's nobody else that I can call
It's like wanting you and not having you
I'll never get used to

Lost in a cloud
I think I caught a glimpse of you
Blindly I rush to touch your hand, huh!
To discover it's my mind
Playing tricks on me again
Tricks on me again

Some things you never get used to
Sometimes I think my heartaches come to an end
And then something brings them all back again
Like wanting you and like having you
I'll never get used to
It's wanting you and like having you
I'll never get used to
Look here !
Like wanting you and like having you
I'll never get used to

ONE OF MY FAVORITES!!! PEACE & BLESSINGS

Diana Ross and the Supremes appeared on a 1968 TV special called Crusade '68. It was produced by the American Cancer Society. It was hosted by Eva Gabor and Eddie Albert of Green Acres. It aired on April 14 of that year; just ten days after Martin Luther King was killed.

Does anyone know what word she says after SOMETIMES I THINK MY HEARTACHES __________????? I've only been trying to figure it out for some 35years. 🤔🤔🤔

    B.... D....

I think (or at least, I am hearing)...Sometimes I think my heartaches come to an end.....

  4. s.... ....

This one was written by the great songwriting sweethearts team of Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson who wrote a series of monster hits for Marvin and Tammi (Gaye and Terrell) This ain't foolin' around!

  5. c.... ....

Ashford and Simpson always brought the best out of Diana and a certain soul in their production that during that time, I don’t think the mainstream could really receive her singing this type of music so well, because they were accustomed to her singing in the middle. The more ethnic communities didn’t really look at Diana either to really receive her in that way for they didn’t really pay attention to her in that way, but this is EXCELLENT CLASSIC SOUL!

Yes, Ms. Ross and the girls.

  7. t.... ....

IT'S LIKE A CHILD'S FIRST STEP I HAD TO LEARN TO WALK ALL OVER AGAIN. she is AWESOME.

  8. f.... ....

A forgotten classic. Should have been top 10.

    f.... ....

    I agree, Awesome Motown classic

  9. M.... ....

i wonder if they ever performed this?, one of my favs by DRATS

    M.... ....

It was in their live act for a brief time in the summer of 1968 before it was pulled when it stalled on the charts.

    M.... ....

@Bradley Scarton I would love for a audio or even video recording of them performance this surface I'm surprised they didn't sing this on Ed Sullivan

    M.... ....

MusicBlue22 They could have squeezed in a May performance when it was released, but the Sullivan show was on hiatus in the summer when this song needed the promotion to get it up the charts.

My favorite by them , but not a huge hit here in the UK ....love the way the bridge wanders off and some how makes it back intact :-) Thanks for sharing this total classic.

Not much of a hit here either. Oh yeah our fellow Supremes fans will say how much they loved it but fact is, it only made it as high as #30, worse on the R&B chart at # 43. A flop by anyone elses standards, a massacre for the Supremes. Gordy ended up scrapping an album of the same name after the single started falling after just 3 weeks. Worse yet, it was an Ashford and Simpson tune.

@Muscle When they let Flo go, this is what you got!

On this day in 1968 {July 10th} Diana Ross & the Supremes and Stevie Wonder were co-headliners at a concert at the San Diego Arena in San Diego, California...
At the time the Supremes' "Some Things You Never Get Used To" was in its second of three weeks at #30 Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart and that was also its peak position on the chart and it stayed for 7 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #43 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart...
The song was composed by Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson, and they also sang back-up to Diana Ross on the song instead of The Supremes...

This is not a Supremes record..  This is Diana Ross and who knows who in the background.  Funny how executives count on the public to be so stupid that these executives feel they can put anyone in the studio to sing with Diana Ross and still call it a Supremes  record.  That is part of the dishonesty of the music business. By this time Diana Ross was no longer recording with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong except on rare occasions.   And Diana Ross was OK with this.

    J.... A....

Still a fabulous recording though, Isn't it?

    J.... A....

I thought that the Andantes did the backing.

    J.... A....

Not quite according to Valerie Simpson they didn’t have time to teach Mary and Cindy the background parts so they did it themselves

    J.... A....

    @dchi2012
What do you mean they "didn't have time" to teach Mary and Cindy the background parts? That's a load of bull. I guess Valerie was just so so busy that neither her or her partner could spare any minutes for Miss Wilson and Miss Birdsong. But somehow Motown had loads of time to teach Miss Ross her part. Let's just say they didn't feel it was worth their time to teach Mary and Cindy their background parts. They could have made a demo of the background parts and let Mary and Cindy work from that. That's how singers usually learn a song anyway.

    J.... A....

U can call it bull but that’s what happened

  13. G.... F....

Pure nostalgia!  Great song, thanks for the upload

  14. J.... J....

I was always a Supremes fan. They could do no wrong .

  15. r.... c....

    T.... ....

+TheInasboi It's not my favourite... but when I want to signify sex, I make that marimba sound... Chuck-a-chucka-chucka-choo.

  17. d.... m....

did you ever think you might be listening to ashford &simpson in the background

    d.... m....

+donaId miller They have always provided background vocals for their compositions when they were involved with the production.

  18. s.... ....

    Great Song

  19. b.... m....

LOVE!!!!LOVE!!!!LOVE!!!! this jam by Miss Ross and The Supremes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. R.... M....

This song makes me think of my cat Cry-Baby, who died  2/6/14, at age 12. I had her since she was 6 weeks old.

  21. m.... s....

loved this song and it was something that was fresh, I agree the post H-D-H song let Diana grow as an artist but the sound of the supremes as a whole was affected.I am a big fan of the Andantes but their overall well rounded sound didn't serve the supremes like other Motown groups mary and cindy should have been able to sing on these songs

  22. t.... ....

    i second that emotion!

  23. t.... ....

so do i. a very underrated song...

  24. d.... ....
