Ross, Diana - I Thought That We Were Still In Love Lyrics

Last night while we were talking the way that old friends do
I suddenly got lost in my yesterdays with you
I told you that in my heart you would always be the one
That I'd lie waking in the dark, pray that you will come

But I didn't mean to say that
Somehow it just slipped out
I swear that I would take it back
If I could right now
All I ask is you believe
I'd forgotten where I was
With you there so close to me
I thought that we were still in love

Oh I knew just what I'd done when you stood up so fast
And say the friends that we'd become can't hold on to the past
You said it's been a long long time since love came to an end
If I hadn't learned to draw the line, it's useless to pretend

But I didn't mean to say that
Somehow it just slipped out
I swear that I would take it back
If I could right now
All I ask is you believe
I'd forgotten where I was
With you there so close to me
I thought that we were still in love

I don't think I could take goodbye, that much is still the truth
Won't you forgive me just for one night, it's what a friend would do

'Coz I didn't mean to say that
Somehow it just slipped out
I swear that I would take it back
If I could right now
All I ask is you believe
I'd forgotten where I was
With you there so close to me
I thought that we were still in love

Still in love
I thought that we were still in love

Take Me Higher is a criminally underrated album.

Ross is an emotional conveyor. When she brings you to a place of loneliness then you too share her loneliness. She takes her time here, she is singing the lyric to a man she loved and lost. She is communicating the complexity of emotion about what she did to lose the man and how much she needs him. When a woman hurts then she is raw and in many ways a lost soul. Ross must have felt the loss at some point in her life.

The take me higher album is a beautiful peice of work by the boss

Graham, yes! I recently had to reevaluate how I rank the Take Me Higher CD, and I now think this is her second best body of work, ranking it behind the 1980 Album called Diana that had all the jams on it from track 1 thru track 8, from top to bottom. The Take Me Higher is pretty much in that same category. They left a couple of other jams off the US version that should have been included. However, this CD is Masterpiece. I did have the Boss album second but it's the Take me Higher by an edge.

pudder1961, I also believe that the Take Me Higher CD was one of her best, but I think the Diana CD with Tenderness, My Old Piano, and Upside Down by far, hands down, is her best body of work. I rank Take Me Higher #2 with the Boss not that far behind. This song was a good recording for Ross. It brings out her true talent and it's a song that represents her style and taste quite well when it comes to recording a love story.

Me too, I love "Take me higher"; it may be my favorite with "The boss".

I love this recording.  It is an exquisite song, and Ms. Ross' interpretation shows what a gifted singer and actress she has always been.  You can hear the pain and regret and longing in her voice all at the same time.  Wow!  Thanks for posting the song -- it should be heard more often and by more people.
