Ross, Diana - I'm Living In Shame Lyrics

Mama was cookin' bread
She wore a dirty raggedy scarf around her head
Always had her stockings low
Rolled to her feet just didn't know
She wore a sloppy dress
Oh no matter how she tried she always looked a mess
Out of the pot she ate
Never used a fork or a dinner plate
I was always so afraid that
The uptown friends would see her
Afraid one day when I was grown
That I would be her
In college town away from here
A new identity I found
That I was born elite
With maids and servants at my feet
I must have been insane
I lied and said mama died on a weekend trip to Spain
She never got out of the house
Never even boarded a train
Married a guy, was living high

I didn't want him to know her
she had a grandson two years old
That I never even showed her
I'm living in shame
Mama, I miss you
I know you're not to blame
Mama, I miss you

Got a telegram
Mama passed away while making home made jam
before she died she cried to see me by her side
She always did her best
Ah cooked and cleaned and always in the same old dress
Working hard, down on her knees
Always trying to please
Mama, mama, mama can you hear me
Mama, mama, mama can you hear me
I'm living in shame
Mama, I miss you
I know you've done your best
Mama, I miss you
Won't you forgive me mama
For all the wrong I've done
I know you've done your best
Oh I know you've done the very best you could
Mama I thought you understood
Working hard, down on your knees

I cannot listen to this song without thing about My own Mum .. 1929 - 2016 .RIP ----Mama can you hear me !!! - this song comes from an era when Lyrics had something had something of sense to say - Diana is singing about "passing as white " like in the film Imitation of Life , (with Mahalia Jackson singing at the end ) - True Life for Many !!!

My Mama was always there for me till the day she passed. I saw her the day before and let her know I love her.

I don' t understand exactly the social envinroment in which is acceptable to sing legerrly about such disrespectful and dishonest tragedy...I'am in shock.

I went through something like this with my folks. Got out of the old neighborhood, in college, new friends from rich families and thought I was better than my parents. Even changed the way I talked.  Started saying "dinner" instead of "supper", little things like that. My mom cold feel my attitude. I can still see my father out there in the fields with a shovel in his hand. Truth is I wasn't even good enough to kiss their shoes. Just something I had to go through. They're both gone now and this song brings me to my knees. By the way, as a kid I had the biggest crush on Diana Ross.

This. Song. Kill. Me. Mama won't you forgive me for all the wrong I've done I knew you done your best. I listen to the words at the end of the song. It make me cry. The very best of Supremes

I remember this song on a 45 record I bought long ago. It was always one of my favorites but I was never sure I had the words right so 'thank you'. Reminds me of a movie from before my time called 'Imitation of Life' check it out.
