Ross, Diana - How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone Lyrics

How long has that evening train been gone
I wanna know
How long has that evening train been gone

I have a babe that was standing at the station
Waiting for a train
I ran to the door with my heart in my hand
(Heart in my hand)
And all my future plans
I've gotta catch him if I can
Is that express Mr. Station man
I woke up this mornin'
With a smile on my face
Feelin' that the world
The world was a beautiful place

How long has that evening train been gone
I want to know
How long has that evening train been gone

On a scrap of paper was the
Train arriving information
His room was empty and his closet's bare
And not a single shirt was hangin' there

How could the guy just up and leave me
What did I do that was so displeasing
Only yesterday he helped me type
He told me everything
Everything's gonna be alright

Oh, he said he loved me and he cried
Oh yeah, he said he loved me and he cried
Oh, yes he did now

There must be an explanation
Come on and move out the station
Can't you see that he's taking my world
And making me a sad sad girl
That's why I can't let go
That's why I gotta know

How long has that evening train been gone
I wanna know how long
Has the train been gone
Oh yeah, has that evening train been gone
Right now
Can't wait a minute longer
How long has that evening train been gone
Right now

  1. C.... W....

    James was a beast !!!

  2. T.... ....

THE SUPREMES Jean Terrell version here in YouTube is superior and more soulful than this DRATS version.

    T.... ....

Jean Terrell is where old Mary Wilson queens go to die

    T.... ....

@Mic ...lol.....Diane Ross is where THE SUPREMES fans refuse to die on. FUCK Diane Ross

  3. U.... ....

Im always baffled by the " there is no such thing as the greatest bass player" thing. To me its pretty straight forward. Just put a bunch of check marks next to a list of categories and see how many checks your guy gets vs how many Jamerson gets. Take your time and don't cheat! Every category counts like... Who knows their instrument the best- Greatest contribution to the overall arrangement- Heres one i like... IF YOU PUT 20 KNOWN BASSIST IN A ROOM, WHICH GUY WOULD SAY "IM BETTER THAN JAMERSON?" (lmao). Best at note duration and transition between notes- Most melodic and funky at the same time (usually its either one or the other! rarely is it both)- What bass player would have ever thought of a bass line like darling dear?lol. Stuff like that. Most sought after- Most imitated -Most courageous... I could save you a lotta time and just tell you ITS JAMES JAMERSON!!! Take this song for instance. The arrangement is all over the place and even gets a little messy at times. Pull down the fader on the bass and this song is just a bunch of weird changes. Thats why it was a B side that most people never heard when it was out. ZERO RADIO PLAY! Still Jamerson glues the whole song together! Can your guy do that?

  4. C.... ....

    Whew.....that bass

  5. R.... G....

    that's forever CreChe

  6. P.... H....

Fabulous track from a fabulous album. I've been listening to this for 30 years and not tired of it yet!

  7. T.... B....

The greatest bassline in 1960s pop music.

  8. 2.... w....

If you find a motown record suprisingly fantstic and astounding far far beyond your description,

    It's James Jamerson.

    2.... w....

    LOL fr fr.

    2.... w....

That basssssss is doing a solo !!!!! Come on Mr Jamerson

  9. M.... ....

Diana's vocal at certain points indicate shock at her lover being truly gone...she can sound petulant, sexy, demanding, pleading...all with just a shift in tone...when many others create those responses by endless riffs and hysteria.

  10. S.... O....

Diana Ross sings this best way better Jean Terrell

  11. R.... R....

Pretty good. I do like the Jean Terrell version better, even though it's just a raw demo cut. Listening back to back just reinforces what I have always thought, Ross's voice is 'prettier' and more unique, but Terrell is by far the better singer.

    R.... R....

Yeah that's why Diana Ross is considered one of the best of all time. A singer by which others are measured...Jean...well not so much

  12. T.... G....

1:53-2:09 James killing it on Bass. This brotha mixing up his own line within the line!!!!!! Dayum! Makes me want to pick up a bass just to honor him !!!

  13. T.... G....

Damn JJ was f’in shit up like crazy on this track!! He has like multiple time signatures in his head at once! He played the sht out of the bass on this track ! Ive never heard this track until today and my jaw dropped! And looked up to the sky and said “Damn James, you da man!”

  14. P.... S....

I loved writing this to Frank Wilson's track he did the track and the top melody and lyric just naturally fell in place. I like Diana's version best and Jamersons intro WOW. 😍

    P.... S....

Pam Sawyer I love this song. Thank you so much!

    P.... S....

you helped write this song ?? I am Stephen in Hawaii. glad to meet you. this is one of my favorite songs.
I have become very attached to the LOVE CHILD songs.
I wish I could write music like you do.
    Stephen in Hawaii USA

    P.... S....

    OH WOW PAM SAWYER 👀👀👀

    P.... S....

Jean, upbeat version holds up too.

  15. B.... O....

    King James!

  16. M.... C....

Marvelous Diana Ross and the Supremes.
    Number one in the World.

  17. B.... ....

    DRATS have the best B-sides

    B.... ....

    I agree

  18. b.... ....

Jamerson is just so BRILLIANT on this song. His intro came in like a ghost and then just sat down and took over this song.

    b.... ....

Yes - and what blows my mind is his creativity. It's easy for us to enjoy and recreate but he's playing a style that had not been heard before. #GOAT

    b.... ....

I agree mr jamerson"s genius! with the hook

  19. e.... a....

MS ROSS IS KILLING IT ON THIS ONE

  20. J.... M....

Jean Terrell did a version of this tune, too. Hey this is rock & roll. I hear plenty of groovy guitar in here. why dont people give Miss Ross a break as a musician?.

    J.... M....

Because she was damn good, and she knew it and was a star of the first magnitude.. She also dared to be what everyone else wouldn't

    J.... M....

Some people are just jealous of Diana Ross like Mary Wilson and can't help themselves! Lol

  21. a.... ....

    Love this song.. :)

  22. J.... B....

2016 and is everybody still listening-long live Motown.

  23. J.... D....

There are many arguments over "WHO" was or is the best bass player. In my opinion, was wonderful, delightful. I'm glad to have been around, a teen during this time. Still listen to a lot of Motown. WHY? Jamerson on bass and Benny on drums.

    J.... D....

    BENNY NOT ON DRUMS

    J.... D....

Benny don't play like that he's faster a more driving punch this more Uriel or Pisto Allen

    J.... D....

Subjective of course but for me JJ and Chuck Rainey are the two who really got and defined what the bass as a bass is all about and why I switched from sax to the bass as a youngster. If I want to solo I'll play sax!

    J.... D....

    Most likely Uriel Jones.

    J.... D....

    @Fenderman 73 YEP urial

  24. I.... ....

JJ is all over the place on this track. Unheard of for a Soul/R&B song. Don't get me wrong, Jamerson is killing it. But I'm amazed this Motown actually let this type of busyness pass. But then, we are talking about the greatest Soul/R&B bass guitarist of all time...

  25. C.... C....

Oh the P-Bass......on this track it's warmer and has more growl than anything I ever heard in my life. Long live JJ, the man.

    C.... C....

+farric1 JJ was one bada** mofo on the bass..

    C.... C....

    azaryd hell yea!

  26. B.... G....

Its a shame people can't get past the politics of the Supremes and just enjoy the music. This song is terrific, as is the entire Love Child LP. And for the record, You are hearing Mary and Cindy on this track. In fact most of the tracks on this album are Mary and Cindy, harmonizing and singing some beautifully arranged backing vocals (I'll Set You Free is amazing, Cindy's soprano really shines on that song)
. The Andantes only appear on three tracks on Love Child, two of which were released as 45s.

    B.... G....

+Bg Gb The ones that know the trajectory and the music catalog of THE SUPREMES know the facts but the militant Diane Ross solo act fans are on crusade to discredit the contributions of SUPREMES FOUNDING MEMBERS Florence Ballard & Mary Wilson and even Cindy Birdsong's foolishly to solidify Diane Ross into music history!

Diane Ross credits on MUSIC HISTORY were already decided by THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM when they got "inducted" in 1984.
Those are Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & Diane Ross, THE SUPREMES!
Unlike members of other Music Groups/Bands like THE BEATLES who later were inducted "individually" Diane Ross is PASSED BY year after year because her contribution amounts to no more than being part of the ensemble group already inducted, THE SUPREMES. That's her legacy!

    B.... G....

You and many others have still never explained why such hatred for Diana Ross. She obviously had the talent needed.

    B.... G....

TWTR4EVER Diana Ross legacy is still way better than Mary Wilson's who only credit is standing behind Miss Diana Ross on stage and sing background on a few records!

    B.... G....

TWTR4EVER Lord, God! Whoever you are; you're the living embodiment of madness.

  27. l.... ....

One of the most underrated songs! The baseline makes the song!

  28. K.... H....

What art that bassline is!  After all these years it is still is so unique and original.  A true classic. Jamerson basslines are the product of genius and no one else plays them better than he does himself.  For me he's up there with Van Gogh and Mozart.

    K.... H....

Neither Van Gogh nor Mozart compare to James Jamerson.  No way.

    K.... H....

    You're right

    Jamerson is better ;)

  29. n.... b....

    ah ce Jamerson. Un Maitre!!!!

  30. N.... ....

This song is one of my all time favorite B-Sides along with You've Been So Wonderful To Me. James Jamersons Bassline is KILLER

    N.... ....

    Dam real

  31. T.... Y....

Did you know one of Bobby's last jobs was carrying Diana's wig box...

    T.... Y....

It was his last job because Miss Ross threw her wig box at an airport ticket agent because her wig box was too big for a carry on. The ticket agent insisted that Miss Ross check her wig box and Miss Ross responded by throwing the wig box at the poor agent who was only following airline policy. MIss Ross felt she was exempt from airline policy and yelled at the agent demanding that he answer the question.... "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM??

  32. M.... M....

If you love the sound of the late 60s Supremes' recordings, check out Kiki Dee and her album "Great Expectations." Similar sound and sure to not disappoint.

  33. A.... M....

amazing! can u upload the supremes' what world need now is love cover?

  34. B.... D....

Love the mature Supremes sound with The Andantes in the background....this album is about the exact same age as me :))

  35. r.... ....

turn the bass way up on the EQ -- perfect :)

  36. g.... ....

You said it!! How did he think of that Bass Line.

  37. W.... R....

James Jamerson at the peak of his game. There are many great fender bassists out there, a lot of them disciples of James, but still today, all these many years later, for melodic finger funk, he is THE MAN. Willie Riser Oakland

  38. A.... L....

Jamerson is an animal. How does someone even think up a bass line that intricate that works? Just speechless.......

  39. t.... ....

Of course this wasn't an "A" side because it was too good, too sophisticated, for top 40

  40. s.... ....

    I LOVE MOTOWN!

  41. T.... ....

    @adarvas oh yes he is

  42. N.... M....

The only thing that would make this song better was if the bass were mixed louder.

  43. l.... ....

go Jamerson go! the greatest ever on the low end, PERIOD! thanks for posting, God bless!

  44. J.... G....

My mom use play this song when was a kid LOVED IT....I'm 35 now

  45. J.... P....

interesting song, Jamerson is working his bass

  46. g.... ....

James Jamerson! What a bass line.

  47. t.... ....

@JMB30 Isn't this outstanding? They just don't make music like this anymore. Even though this song is older than me! LOL

  48. t.... ....

    Another James Jamerson masterpiece!

  49. k.... ....

One of the best non-HDH productions from them.
