Ross, Diana - Emerald City Sequence Lyrics

[EMERALD CITY GREEN:]

I want to be seen green
Wouldn't be caught dead, red
'Cause if you are seen green
It means you got mean bread

You've got to be seen green
To show that you're stuff's layed
If you're not seen green
You better be wearing jade

Oh, you've got to be seen green
Don't tell them your cupboard's bare
That you gave up one week's feed
To pay for your colored hair
Oh, oh, oh

[AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE GREAT POWERFUL OZ:]

I thought it over and green is dead
'Till I change my mind, the color is red

[EMERALD CITY RED:]

I wouldn't be seen green
Ooo! Oo! Oo! Ah! Ah!
I wouldn't be caught dead
And if I'm caught at all
Then catch me in dead, red
Ooo!
You've got to be dead red
You've got to be real hot
So throw away those green gems
And wear rubies on your yacht

You've got to be dead, red
You've got to have flash and flair
And if you're not seen red
Then you shouldn't be seen nowhere
Ah!

How quickly fashion goes down the drain.
Last week when you all was wearin' pink
Already for me red was old.
The ultimate brick is gold.
That's the new color, children

[EMERALD CITY GOLD:]

Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold

You got to be seen gold
Watch out for the new kind
You got to have old gold
Like some from a gold mine

You got to be wearin' gold
The twenty four carat kind
And once you've shined it up
It should ought to make you blind, ah!

You got to be seen in gold
To show that you're super slick
It helps to pay tips and tolls
It's the ultimate yellow brick
It's the ultimate
Gold

Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold
Golden gold
Gold, gold, gold, gold
Gold!

Amazing sequence beautifully shot outside the WTC when it was the symbolic beacon of pease that it was intended to be.

  2. s.... ....

  6. R.... C....

I appreciate all the cultural significance of this scene. I really do. Even without all the genius of it’s representation and expression, this scene stands on it’s own. I remember when I was 11 years old and saw it in the theater I was completely dazzled.

  7. E.... M....

Diana Ross face at 1:12 is me whenever I also see my beautiful black brothers and sisters 😂✊🏽‼️

  8. M.... L....

I think this was shot at the World Trade center but it does look like the courtyard of the WTC

We were so busy being entertained...that we missed the education. Forgive us, ankhcestors...

    K.... X....

    Educated on what?

    K.... X....

@MissTia777 how things really are for Black folk. We missed the clues this & many other movies of that time provided.

  12. O.... K....

I remember this movie from when I was a kid. This scene used to move me so much and still does. I feel closer to something and I’m not sure what. As a black female I feel as if I’m not sure what my culture is but this makes me fell connected somehow. I just love films like this and I haven’t found one that moves me like this one does. This will forever have a special place in my soul.

  13. A.... ....

    Miss this!

  14. c.... L....

In the Underground House scene this shit is bananas when played right✊🏾 Woo this shit is classic

  20. N.... ....

    These were black people

    N.... ....

    Filthy white man

  21. P.... L....

8th grade. That was when one of my teachers demanded that we see this film in the theater and took all of us. I am now 54. This is still one of my favorite movies.

  22. Q.... L....

I still hate the flying monkeys, but those horns..JUST MADE ME WANNA WATCH BEYCHELLA😂

  23. K.... B....

I’m here in living in 2019 and I was born in 2000 this was 1978 this scene is still lit🔥🔥 to this fucking day PERIODTTTTT

  24. V.... G....

The Wiz is a masterpiece! I grew up loving this version more than the '39 original. BEAUTIFUL.

  25. J.... P....

I'll never forget these scenes from The Wiz ! For those of you who aren't familiar with the history of black modeling and style, the 70's was a spectacular time! We were not only killing them on the runways here but also in Europe! There was a move to do restoration on the palace of Versailles in France, a fashion show was planned with 5 top french and 5 top American designers. Black designer Stephen Burrows being one of the chosen. The cream of European society and nobility attended . The french showed their stuff in over the top, grand but dated styling. Then the Americans opened their segment with Liza Minnelli belting out "Bonjour Paris " Halston, Anne Klein, Oscar de la Renta, Stephen Burrows, and Bill Blass showed their best in a modern, choreographed Broadway style. But what made the whole thing so incredible was the black models! Those sisters strutted, sashayed and pranced like queens! The audience went berserk and were stomping in their seats and threw their programs up in their air!!! Yes, we slayed them that night much to the embarrassment of the french! There is a video done on that historic night and American fashion was put on the map. Those black sisters were the key figures in our success!

  26. B.... W....

6:54 I also like this music

  27. J.... b....

I love this part of the movie the fashion is amazing, the music is amazing jazz , blues, disco. Everything

  28. M.... S....

The creativity behind this is beyond everything.

  29. D.... M....

Dear black people of 2019 most of our dancing and some music come from this movie #blackandproud#

  30. N.... S....

Are we all now walking cameras!!!

  31. Q.... L....

I can literally watch this over and over ( and I have) The woman in the front with the gold pants and fan hat... She has been my dance muse since I was a kid!!!

  32. T.... ....

Filmed outside the World Trade Center. One of my favorite parts of the movie!🔥😍👏🏾👏🏾

  33. E.... W....

Quincy Jones was playing the piano in thr gold part. I believe everyone mostly was wearing gold. All other color wear a tint.

  34. C.... J....

As a kid watching this with my family in the late 1980s on TV, my favorite color was the Gold 🌟💛

  35. A.... T....

My favorite is green , my sisters is red and my cousins is gold and I can say that they fit our personalities lol

  36. A.... D....

I still think that Stephanie Mills should have gotten the part as Dorothy after playing her 5 years on Broadway. This movie got low ratings because an old woman was trying to play the part of a young girl. #vote2020

  37. C.... ....

I was 11 when this movie came out. I used walk around the living room like this (@3:50) in my bath robe... LOL I was so gay!

    C.... ....

    😂😂😂

  38. l.... ....

I'm 50 yrs. old and the Wiz is one of my favorite movies!! I can't help it...especially the" Color is"! This movie makes me smile and reminisce of many wonderful things and of course, the music is wonderful!

  39. M.... G....

    World trade center 78

  40. J.... ....

THEY WALKING HUNTY , and I’m living for it .

  41. M.... ....

my favorite Red and Gold scenes

  42. m.... ....

Diana is the only one left alive. 😭

  43. F.... ....

    this scene is iconic

  44. M.... Z....

I often sing this song to myself.

  45. J.... R....

    1:29 I live for Diana’s awkward dancing

  46. T.... ....

I watch this and think about how black excellence in music and culture was at its height through to the 70s and early to mid 80s, then crack hit the streets and then the decline of black music and culture began what the introduction gangster rap.

  47. d.... ....

This movie was before it’s time! Classic

  48. J.... ....

    The trumpets call💯💯💯

  49. C.... B....

    That was epic! :D

  50. B.... W....

    2:25 I like this music

  51. P.... Y....

    Fun fact
all the people in this number where Waring silver clothes so when it was cought by the lighting would take on the color

  52. L.... P....

This was my favorite part as a little girl watching this at my grandma's house on the VHS, loved this movie and always will

  53. *.... *....

    Wakanda Forever!!🗣💚❤️💛💚❤️✊🏾

  54. P.... ....

If your smart you'd pick all three colors 🙌🙌🙌

  55. K.... C....

  57. R.... C....

Wow, seen this movie hundreds of times, never knew that was Quincy on the piano....Got to be seen in green. Black Excellence

  58. K.... C....

    Look at the twin towers

  59. T.... T....

    It’s like a black Xanadu

  60. W.... ....

Whats the significance of this scene? Is it just to show how society is filled with bunch of followers and sheep?

    W.... ....

The object seen between the two towers is the masonic "all seeing eye." The youtube video "They Are Throwing It in Our Face" (Jay Dyer) shows how Michael Jackson and others have been manipulated by the music industry to enact Pharaohs plans . . .

  61. J.... F....

Now this is my favorite scene especially the music

  62. C.... D....

If u look closely u will c Quicy Jones on the piano at the end

  63. R.... L....

This always fascinated me as a child. I loved seeing all these regal people. I loved to walk like them 😂.

  64. R.... N....

Just gives me shivers watching this...still watching and listening to this in 2019... Amazing this will Never get old.

  65. T.... C....

◾ couldn't be caught dead in red les i was bloody i have to be mellow out so the color for me would be Blue ... so everybody in the kingdom with a Richard Pryor voice would have to wear blue to Gold now ease on down da road ⚫

  66. A.... ....

Anyone who's ever pledged knows the 'Soro strut' when they see it!

  67. r.... t....

    Green is brazilian samba baby!

  68. T.... L....

I think those are the Alvin Ailey dancers in this movie

  69. L.... U....

    RETRO FUTURISTIC BLACK EXCELLENCE.

  70. M.... H....

    ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE

  71. t.... w....

Considering how many teenagers could've played her, having Diana Ross as Dorothy is a real crime. A vanity production in every sense of the word.

  72. V.... N....

    Teem green!💚🙌🏽

  73. D.... X....

The petty bourgie negroes still act like this, if not WORSE lmao

  74. C.... F....

And guess who's that chauffeur at 3:19?

    C.... F....

    Who is it? 😊

    C.... F....

    @lmpierson79 Ted Ross

    C.... F....

  75. G.... A....

The GOLD Song is my favorite 💛🌟🏆

  76. A.... _....

    3:10
    OOOOOHHH... OOOHHH, OOOHHH, UHHH, AHHHH.

My favorite part, You've, got to have FLASH & FLARE

  77. J.... P....

  84. F.... V....

My favorite scene in the whole movie!

  85. a.... w....

  93. S.... A....

I always wondered if everyone really changed their outfits for each scene or if the colored lighting was just that impeccable and they had on silver

  94. S.... A....

The green part is the best 💚💚💚💚 forever my favorite part of the movie!!

  95. J.... O....

    Samba , no começo ???

  96. R.... d....

Oh Quincy.. What have you done?? I could watch this forever and never get bored, GOLD!!!!!!!!!!

  97. d.... ....

Beautifully designed 🌺🌺😊😍I am seriously dancing to this 💃🏽

  98. T.... ....

This was scene that was just as extravagant as it was excellent. To me that are a lot of homages here. To me I get vibes of this being a glorified fashion show, Vogue Magazine, African American culture, Elitism, the colors being a shoutout to the African flag (despite the light change being a traffic light)

  99. U.... F....

    ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!
