Roger Waters - Folded Flags Lyrics

Rock a bye baby
On the tree top
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock
And babe, hate to see you fall that way
Better speak to the palace than to be today

Hey Joe, where you goin'
With that gun in your hand?
You can take your revenge
But you'll still feel bad
There must be more to life than lucky strikes
And some unlucky ones
And folded flags and pipes
And drums

I stood in the wings with you
Our lives in the hands of a second-rate actor
Holding the high ground
On some old stage
And babe, how do these cheated stores get so far away
Will they catch you at the bottom

Hey Joe, where you goin'
With that dogma in your head?
You can prove your point,
But your kids will still be dead
Bring down the curtain
The soap opera must surely close
Before the cold wind blows

Hey Joe, where you goin'
with that gun in your hand
You can take your revenge
But you'll still feel bad
Bring down the curtain
The show must close
Before the cold wind blows

So rock a bye baby
On the tree top
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock
There must be more to life than lucky strikes
And some unlucky ones
And folded flags and pipes
And drums

Roger Waters Folded Flags Comments
  1. M.... M....

The saxophone blows my mind 😎

  2. K.... S....

They need to give waters a Nobel Peace Prize

  3. k.... ....

Anyone know if there's a version without the laughtrack?

  4. N.... T....

Some of this made it to the Radio KAOS tour.

  5. .... ....

    So sad! ㅠㅠ

  6. G.... L....

we never exactly see what happened to the couple after the movie ended, all we know is that they didn't make it.. but throughout the film, there's these small dream sequences, they don't exactly have anything to do with the plot of the movie, but that's the point, it's a small scene where we see a sequance of a dream, filled with sounds of birds chriping, peaceful guitar noises, a medow of flowers, and imagery of somewhat a fairy tale like fantasy, where we see our protagonist venture in a light blue medow, out of all the darkness and tension this film brings, there's yet these smal dream scenes of peacefulness, the dream of what this film wants, something else than just, nuclear boms, war, politics. The dream of what this film wants, a peaceful world

  7. C.... ....

Nukes serve absolutely no purpose and MAD is a deeply flawed dogma, and the idea of a limited or winnable nuclear war even more so.

  8. S.... D....

What a good song. But it could be better in Radio KAOS.

  9. J.... ....

To get the full impact of this song, you have to watch the movie and take it in the context of seeing an elderly couple slowly dying of radiation poisoning.

  10. S.... F....

This movie is how I discovered Roger Waters' solo work, hearing it now still brings back that same feeling I had when I first saw the film and its ending. It's this odd mixture of being devastated by what just happened and being at such a complete loss of words that at first I couldn't even muster the tears until the gravity of the ending really sank in. The way the song and credits cut off those last few barely audible words from the old couple seemed to solidify their fate and always left me feeling like I'd just been awoken from a dream. This movie and its soundtrack are beautiful and gutting all at once. Still one of the most emotionally gripping pieces of animation I've ever seen to this day.

  12. P.... N....

I discovered this song before watching the actual movie since I was looking for more underrated Water's work, and I decided to watch the film after a while. And god. I found that song beautiful before but now that I've seen the whole thing and that I understand the story it strikes me so much I can't stop myself from crying every time I listen to it. The movie itself is emotionally strong but that song and Bowie's one bring something even more powerful to it.

    "Palace than be today".....

You mean "powers that be". That makes no sense

My favourite tune of all time.

  20. n.... T....

my favourite song of all time. deeply moving. like to see a cock like ed sheeran come up with this.

  21. W.... L....

I have never cried over a film ore TV show in my life but when watching this it reminded me so much of my Nan and granddad i just couldn't help but to cry my eyes out.

  22. n.... T....

is this waters best song? it is for me. kills me every time.

  23. n.... T....

what fucking wankers disliked this!!! assholes.

  24. S.... J....

This song is so depressing . I cry every time I listen to it. :(

    S.... J....

I hate happy songs. I like bittersweet. Or this kind of song.

  25. M.... L....

Oh what do you know? A sad song to top off a sad movie! Perfect!

  26. M.... ....

    love it!!!

  27. J.... ....

History is great in that it allows us to see the foolishness of past thought.  Waters, in his uber-liberal worldview in the 1980s was so wrong it's not even funny.  He mocked Reagan and Thatcher in song as war-mongers, but with Pope John Paul II, those two brought down the Soviets without firing a shot.  Liberals like Waters love leftists like LBJ, FDR and Woody Wilson despite the fact that those three got us into the bloodiest wars of the 20th century.

In 30 years time, we'll look back at the foolishness of the "global warming/climate change" movement and the folly of Clinton to allow NK to get nuclear weapons and the folly of Obama to arm Iran with nukes.  When will we ever learn that the left is never right.

    J.... ....

JoeSchilp What a fucking idiot, it's attitudes like yours that will be the end of us.

    J.... ....

JoeSchilp - nah its still there , they just changed the name since they went broke lol, same country

    J.... ....

JoeSchilp Ronald Reagan did in fact tried to play aggressive with the Soviets. It's good to remember that the '80s were probably the worst times for US-USSR relations since the '50s.

    J.... ....

JoeSchilp The world's a stage politicians are mere puppets the real leaders of this world are the zionist elite the Rothchild's etc you do realise our presidents and prime ministers are selected not elected don't you then again judging by your comment you've swallowed every story peddled to you your whole life, wake up smell the BS !

    J.... ....

Joeschlip you know that LBJ FDR and Clinton helped our country LBJ sighned the civil rights bill FDR saw us out of the Great Depression and created jobs,Social Security for the Elderly Welfare for the sick Clinton saw America through one of the biggest economic growth in is history oh and scientists have basically proven Global Warming

  28. s.... C....

''You can proove your point, but your kids will still be dead.''

    s.... C....

@sampea CAML Certainly the most poignant line.

    s.... C....

rogers a brilliant storyteller ,always, from floyd to new album , he just says fuck ya lol, ya dont like it , tough shit

    s.... C....

That’s why He was named Roger Waters meant to be Great .

  29. R.... ....

this song is to our troops in afghanistan!

    R.... ....

This song, the movie and the comic it was based on are AGAINST war regardless of sides.

    R.... ....

Wrong Randy. It's YOUR UN as well since the United States is one of the founders of the organization and thus a permanent member of the security council. Go ahead and "kick ass" in your little trailerpark while the o-so-great United States collapses by its own stupidity to China. Don't worry, it'll be fun to watch :)

    R.... ....

Also this song is anti war. And considering how the movie it accompanies is also anti war, it makes no sense at all how you thought it supports the troops in Afghanistan.

    R.... ....

    +Chrystian Rafael Spot on

    R.... ....

it cracks me up how people hate american citizens like we have some kind of sway or choice in the political scape of our country dont belittle america dont belittle any country because the people of that country are just as powerless to make a choice. Yes america is what i call a high stake country its my home we have a long history of fucking with the weak to extract objects of our interests. Its imperialism and we are infact an early product if the same exact same imperialism we are being damned for now. Again most americans sit and roll with the punches because what can one do. High stakes we have a kick ass military maby best in the world. But we are all hated. We can fight our fight because when a country gets powerful the quickly aquire enemies. Its the nature of the beast. Name a super power that isnt a military ally of a hated nation. The fact is power makes rivaly. Im not surprised people hate america just dont make fun of AMERICANS because we dont have a choice. You didnt point on the globe which pussy you were gonna sqeeze through.
Also bare in mind that british troops have found their way into afganistan too. Again not like they asked for permission or opinion of the people. Yes i understand that british troops work only in joint operation with the united states and in inquantifiably smaller numbers but the poing remains citizens are just on a ride along

  30. T.... W....

Waters early solo stuff is great. This takes to me the Radio Kaos tour. He didn't play any from this album but the very end after the mock nuke strike Billy says "there is more to life then lucky strikes" etc, it was very chilling. Even the morse code at the end of this.  Rock on roger.

    T.... W....

The Morse code is M.A.D MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION

  31. T.... W....

there is more to life then folded flags and pipes and drums.

    T.... W....

    Couldnt say it better

    T.... W....

So true man but it's man most t primal instinct to kill his fellow man for a peace of land

  32. b.... m....

In a nuke war ,there is no winners, whats left after the mushroom clouds are gone ,those alive will envy the dead

    b.... m....

nah , 26 years army here , yer right about no winners , but if im alive , damn if ill envy the dead , seen too many dead

    b.... m....

RANDY RUBLE I'm not sure seeing how tough it will be to live in an irradiated land that was sent back to the dark ages.

    b.... m....

Wow thanks for that I will totally be able to sleep

  33. 1.... ....

I love all Pink Floyd as a band or solo no matter if it is Waters or Gilmour but Folded Flags is very special indeed. I doubt there will be another band like Pink Floyd again. Their music is already immortal.

    1.... ....

    I LIKE THAT  BUDDY

    1.... ....

So true pink floyd was a one of a kind band one cant be put in a specific genre causs they are in a genre of their own

  34. G.... K....

Musik kann so schön sein, danke Roger !

  35. T.... F....

  36. D.... M....

    Beautiful

  37. c.... d....

    Lovin this song

  38. S.... T....

    But more stunningly gorgeous :3

  39. M.... ....

    except ebay lol

    M.... ....

Marcotteproductions Even when you wrote this comment eBay was your only option. This went out of print quickly, I don't think they ever ran a second run.

I have the CD and am waiting for the record to come in the mail. This Record had gone down in value a bit but has been climbing again with sellers (especially after the death of David Bowie who sang the title song).

Hope you've found it in these last five years.

  40. N.... V....

The morse code at the end spells Mutually Assured Destruction, more commonly referred to simply as MAD. Basically, this prevents nuclear war because it highlights the fact that no matter who fires the first missile, the other side will have an equal opportunity to destroy the other no matter what. Therefore, there can be no winner. Basically its all just a trumped up game of Noughts and Crosses which is why, hopefully, there will never be a nuclear war.

    N.... V....

sorrily, i doubt it , one of these nut terrorist groups will get one , a briefcase nuke would be enough to to spark it off sadly

  41. R.... B....

If you're in Britain it could be found in any record store, however if you live in the USA or Canada it's pretty much impossible to find.

    R.... B....

Nope, it's impossible to find over here in the UK also!

    R.... B....

That may have been true five years ago but not anymore. All my English friends are asking if I can find one here in the States.

I will give you this, always been a bitch to find in the States, only seen two in the wild used, the one I aquired in the 90's (stolen) and one at the local record shop I go to. Someone saw it before I did and snagged it.

  42. M.... ....

well i know that but do you know were i can get the soundtrack?

  43. R.... B....

The soundtrack to the film "When the Wind Blows".

  44. 5.... ....

Got you on that, same with me. Don't know why?

  45. J.... S....

It sounds like Brain Damage from the dark side of the moon

  46. 1.... ....

i never cry for any of the movies that i watch but for some reason i teared up watching this movie, truly amazing

  47. M.... ....

does anyone know were i can get this song?

  48. B.... ....

    Where does your friend live?

  49. G.... I....

If you think Roger Waters' solo stuff is shit then you are a tool.

This has been proven by science, so don't try to deny it.

  50. 5.... ....

    s'nice.

  51. G.... F....

This song and Towers of Faith I think are two of the best songs that Roger Waters wrote in his solo career. They are tight simple songs that deliver their message without being too heavy handed. I think this is when he had his Bleeding Hearts Band so Paul Carrack is doing those parts that Dave Gilmour would do. A truly beautiful song.

  52. K.... L....

no one writes songs or words like Roger

  53. N.... ....

    Awesome movie.

  54. D.... W....

    I still like Sid's
    Effervescing Elephant

  55. J.... W....

what's the laughter in the background? always creeped me out!

  56. t.... ....

Have you seen a band called "the australian pink floyd" they are amazing i have seen them live 2 times i have never seen a band capture pink floyd so well in fact i thought they were better than the time i saw roger waters play at a festival back in 2005 im sorry but i thought he was a bit poor not enough pink floyd songs and too much of his solo shit for me.

  57. x.... ....

'Hey Joe, where you going with that dogma in your head?
You can prove your point but your kids will still be dead.'

Lines that that just send shivers down my spine. They are the reason why Roger was, is and always will be the heart and soul of Pink Floyd.

  58. J.... ....

The introductions to both do sound kind of similar

  59. j.... ....

I have them ALL.... and more (Soundtrack) LOL !! Vinyl Freak,,,,,, Floyd Forever

  60. t.... j....

    forgot..... Music from the body

  61. T.... ....

When the wind blows is in the same line as Animal Farm, Watership Down, Plague Dogs,
    The Snowman.
All British animations, and great story`s.
The ending of this one is a bit of a downer, but still worthy of experiencing.
My thanks to people who make such works of art, with true feelings.

    T.... ....

A BIT of a downer? Kind of like saying that getting your head dunked in sulfuric acid only “kinda” hurts.

  62. T.... ....

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, for this upload.
I recently have got my hands on this movie, and am overwhelmed by it`s power.
The last song/end credits did make me emotional, this is so beautiful in it`s simplisity.
I am glad I now also have that song, thank you, and be save.
    A fan of good cartoons.

  63. S.... ....

My first feeling was to be listening to a diferent version of Brain Damage...

  64. h.... ....

i didnt forget syd or richard just didnt mention them because im talking after the remaining floyd members and sadly Syd and Richard arent with us any more

  65. m.... ....

@humfey1 You forgot Richard and Syd.

  66. S.... ....

I listened to this song and as lovely as it is, it's the simple yet stunning sound of the blackbird in the background that reduced me to tears. It reminded me of the film and Jim and Hilda's love until the end when everything has died. Stunning. By the way Margaret Thatcher tried to ban the film because she felt it was derogatory to her war in The Falklands. Enough said!

    S.... ....

SylviesBoudoir especially as Hilda weakly says "no more" as you see the door in the sky. Then the first few notes of this just hit you in the heart.

  67. S.... M....

Paul Carrack sings the "Hey Joe, where ya goin' with that a gun in your hands…" part. That's why it sounds great. I'm not dissing Roger's singing, but give credit where it's due.

    S.... M....

    Steve Menard no

  68. B.... J....

one of the best you never hear

  69. b.... ....

@humfey1 forgot final cut .. bad bad humfey :P

  70. s.... ....

This song was too good to be wasted on an obscure album ... It should have been on Radio Kaos

  71. E.... ....

I think this is some of the man's best singing, and one of his best songs. There are plenty of songs that he struggles to sing, but he really pegs it here. And no one brings more of their own human pain to their lyrics than Waters. He is an international treasure.

  72. k.... ....

my wife and myself saw Roger waters in manchester this yr...The man is brilliant..no backups to his voice and talent..Just raw roger. I bought this on tape ( audio ) when it came out..

  73. B.... ....

    @ELASESINO2OO8
    Don't worry *twitch* that's okay.

  74. E.... ....

The music is similar to Brain Damage and Me Or Him xD (sorry my English is fucking terrible)

  75. h.... ....

ppl buy dark side of the moon and the wall and say thr pink floyd fans nvr hearing likes of animal.wish you were here, obscured by clouds, the piper at the gates of dawn, ummagumma, momenteral laps of reason or relics to name but a few from the mighty floyds impressive back catalogue or even any of roger waters solo works such as pro's and cons, radio kaos or amused to death.A band that will never die even after Waters,Gilmour and mason are gone

  76. 5.... ....

Agreed with the last post in every respect, and noticed there's no dislikes at this time. What's not to like? Great songwriting...

  77. h.... ....

so many ppl claim to be floyd/waters fans and never heard of this song,a bitter sweet film topped with an amazing sound track,ty for uploading this little gem brings a tear to my eye everytime

    h.... ....

humfey1 So what else does someone need to know about to meet your standard of a fan? I'd rather just not be what YOU consider a fan in your arrogance than someone who judges people I have never met because they never heard one song from one soundtrack from one obscure movie.

  78. p.... ....

Beautiful what more is there to say

  79. M.... E....

Wonderful one! One of the most underrated Waters' solo songs!
