Rodney Crowell - If Looks Could Kill Lyrics

If today weren't just like any day, perhaps I'd try
To shed this worn out skin so thick and learn to fly
But I came home to face your ice and steel
If looks could kill I would be gone today

There's a fire that's burning in your eyes, not in your heart
And I can fan the flames but I can't make a spark
And I don't like the way I make you feel
If looks could kill I would be long since gone

And if looks could kill then I'd be pushing up your daisies
If looks could kill then I would not be going crazy

There's a stool that I've been glued to for so many nights
And a bar to pour my heart out on and make it right
And I don't have to tell myself it's real
If looks could kill my heart would beat no more

And if looks could kill then I'd be deep in peaceful slumber
If looks could kill then I would not be going under

There's a gun out in the hallway covered up in dust
That works well enough to turn this heartache into dust
So go on and let your lawyer make a deal
If looks could kill, if looks could kill I would be long since gone

    Dead Man Walking!

  5. F.... C....

Not only does he put up to back up but his killer vids are outstanding and he is youth personified.

  6. G.... J....

Anything written by, performed by rodney crowell has more integrity than just about anyone who survived the music business and still produces the volume of combined music and poetry (aka music) and holds your attentionso tlghtly, anot a dud or a "soso " in the lot!

I don't like country music- never did- make no apologies about it- I grew up listening to the classic oldies & early rock'n roll. Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, Beatles, & Roy Orbison. My BFF was about 3 years younger than me & we spent all our free time at her house. She had every tape this guy made & she played them till I asked who it was; & told her his voice sounded like a happy Roy Orbison. She made me a mixtape, which I still have even though it doesn't play. I miss the 1980's & being young. I miss good tunes & true artists. I miss my best friend. I really miss her. But I still don't like country music. Xoxo CDC

Rodney is the most handsome of all the other loser singers next to Ricky van shelton

  9. q.... ....

How has Rodney not been invited to become a grand ole port member....its beyond me. Genius songwriter, amazing singer. Proof that country music is no longer really country

  10. 7.... ....

Love the steel, strat, and fiddle playing in harmony. Same thing on Vince Gill's Take Your Memory With You

  11. V.... E....

I dont think the piano player trusts Rodney, he keeps looking over his shoulder at him. lol..

  12. P.... F....

Getting ready for work, oooh this song is awesome...Doug Stone

  13. S.... R....

My Trifecta....Beautiful Voice, Song writing at it's best, Was as Cute as can be!

  15. P.... F....

Love this song ,,if looks could kill

  16. V.... ....

Can't believe this song was written in 1990. Musicians back then actually had such a desire to create amazing music and melody as this song than compared to the musicians we have today. Now it's all just about sex, money, and drugs. Such a shame.

  17. A.... C....

    Love ❤️ love ❤️ ❤️ love

  18. C.... P....

    Love a steel

nice song ....if look could kill .......

if country radio would play hits as this, it would make my day so much better. Rodney is the man for country hits. With Emmylou they are a killer team. Just watch ACL back some years. They were amazing. mos60

    m.... ....

mosrite60 yes they do make a killer team. Also Rodney Cromwell has written a lot of number 1 songs. from the Oak Ridge boys, Tim McGraw, George Strait etc now you know why he called the "Jewel of the South". I think this song was written when him and Roseanne Cash were divorcing.

    m.... ....

yes correct. Rodney one of the best song writers. Great singer as well. Always with amazing musicians behind him Steuart, Tommy, Michael etc. mos60

    m.... ....

yes Rodney Crowell is an amazing man.

  23. m.... ....

I believe its Steuart Smith strat, Tommy Spurlock pedal steel, Michael Rhodes bass. Piano ? drums ?. great country stuff. I'll take it every time. mos60

    m.... ....

In the video, the piano player is Tony Brown, famed producer. You can see him in the Rodney and Vince Gill video, "its hard to kiss the lips at night that chew your ass out all day long".

  24. S.... B....

Great song all around. Guitar, pedal steel, bass, piano, wow, amazing gig. mos60

  25. r.... ....

He was one of the most underrated singer and performer as someone said on here.  I always enjoyed him.  He's so very talented.  I just don't' think that he cared that much about being popular or "stardom".

    r.... ....

Steve's The Weekend came out when I had.....a Weekend.

  26. 0.... ....

"If Looks Could Kill !" We men know all about that look when we really screw up. I messed up my marriage and the look in her eyes when she left cannot be explained. Missing her still.

    0.... ....

    @mosrite60
It sucks and hurts so much. I still can't explain why I did what I did. Ignorance and stupidity is all I can say. Missing her still.

    0.... ....

+09jitters  I'm with you on this one Brother. It's a pain that time can't seem to heal.

    0.... ....

+09jitters   I hear ya man.....Been married to #3 for 30 years.  It just aint easy . It just aint easy no matter what you do or say, nuttin is gud nuff.   Was that way with #1 and #2 also and with mom in her last year of life..  Keep your head up though.  In the end, they will suffer more than you. Guaranteed.

    0.... ....

@w banks  Even the Book of Proverbs says that it's better for a man to live in a corner of a room than to live in a mansion with a nagging wife.

    0.... ....

+bobbyj54 With a contentious woman. It took me so many years to learn this. Now I live a single wide trailer with a sweet wife and have never known more contentment.

  27. A.... C....

    Love this song

    A.... C....

+Andy Coleman oh yeah. The peddle in this song is so sweet.

  28. m.... ....

Man what great backup musicians here. excellent cannot describe this. superb folks Rodney is king of country. mosrite60

    m.... ....

mosrite60 totally agree! That steel guitar and all of the musicians are spot on! ❤️

  29. K.... _....

    beautiful song...well guitarist..

  30. A.... D....

Beautiful song and Rodney always has great videos to go along with his great music

  31. M.... B....

Probably the most underrated songwriter in Nashville. And a better singer than all of these new pop stars

  32. j.... j....

great song I love the steel in this song

  33. t.... ....

    Stinging eloquence, old school drive.

  34. o.... ....

I'm surprised that the best song on the same album as this one - "Don't Let Your Feet Slow You Down" - isn't uploaded here on youtube!
If anyone can do me favor ...??

  35. z.... ....

It's a shame that Nashville has turned into the joke that it is. Rodney Crowell, Dale Watson, and others with real talent can't get a true "break" while clowns like the one's you listed are get all the glory.

  36. s.... ....

Rodney has a great turn of phrase it is true.....He don't need to tour with Emmy Lou.

  37. D.... K....

One of the best songwriters/singers of my generation. So many have had hits with his songs and it's easy to see why. His songs are jewels and poetry in motion. But I love his versions and voice. Love this video, and still get a kick at seeing Tony Brown at the piano, making those evil faces of his!

  38. m.... ....

man, are the words speak the truth when we come home after Friday night bar scene!

  39. m.... ....

superb song by Rodney. Great shuffle beat to it

  40. p.... ....

WHY CAN'T THIS "REAL COUNTRY" BE PLAYED ON "COUNTRY" RADIO????? WHAT SOUL!!!! WHAT FEEL!!!!! TODAY'S COUNTRY CAN'T EVEN TOUCH THIS STUFF!!!!!

  41. J.... D....

one of my very favorite country singers....

  42. B.... E....

Fabulous singer, I haved always loved his songs. He strikes me as having a BIG heart.

  43. A.... t....

This guy wrote so many great songs and is a great performer, so I can't understand why he never became as big a star as some of the other guys who have nowhere near his talent. Garth Brooks for instance. People have taste in their A-holes.

  44. W.... C....

    Real Country sound!

  45. G.... P....

@robhan2011 You said it brother... it's a shame what passes for "talent" these days.

  46. o.... ....

    He's really great!!!
Pity there's no upload of "Soul Searching" from the same album as "If Looks Could Kill" ...

  47. D.... D....

music....music....music! rodney crowell you are great! i really miss this great stuff on the radio! hang in there. stay happy and healthy!

  48. b.... ....

Rodney Crowell is amazing and eh has written some of the most classic country-rock-folk songs ever. After All This Time, Ashes By Now and If Looks Could Kill only start the party. What a talent!

  49. R.... H....

Rodney has more talent in his little finger then McGraw, Chesney, Urban, and Raqscal Flats combined.

  50. D.... C....

One of the most Underrated Performersand Songwriters out there. This is the era of some of the absolute best country music From the late 80s-late 90s

  51. D.... W....

Rodney hit #6 in Billboard, 5-19-90. God bless!

  52. R.... ....

Michael's long hair, is that really his?

I heard this song at my first Rodney show in Alabama.

  53. J.... B....

Love this song, love rodney...still couldn't help but laugh out loud at the dude with the cape!
