Robinson, Tom - Power In The Darkness Lyrics
Power in the darkness
Frightening lies from the other side
Power in the darkness
Stand up and fight for your rights
Freedom to choose what you do with your body
Freedom to believe what you like
Freedom for brothers to love one another
Freedom for black and white
Freedom from harassment, intimidation
Freedom for the mother and wife
Freedom from Big Brother's interrogation
Freedom to live your own life... I'm talking 'bout
Power in the darkness
Power in the darkness
Stand up and fight for your rights
"Today, institutions fundamental to the British system of Government are under attack: the public schools, the house of Lords, the Church of England, the holy institution of Marriage, even our magnificent police force are no longer safe from those who would undermine our society, and it's about time we said 'enough is enough' and saw a return to the traditional British values of discipline, obedience, morality and freedom.
What we want is:
Freedom from the reds and the blacks and the criminals
Prostitutes, pansies and punks
Football hooligans, juvenile delinquents
Lesbians and left wing scum
Freedom from the niggers and the Pakis and the unions
Freedom from the Gipsies and the Jews
Freedom from leftwing layabouts and liberals
Freedom from the likes of you..."
Power in the darkness
Frightening lies from the other side
Power in the darkness
Stand up and fight for your rights

Robinson, Tom Power In The Darkness Comments
Relevant in HK and India today!
Meanwhile 40 years later...
today we must take these lyrics as contemporary
Tom Robinson was a time travelling wizard.
Fuck yes.
https://youtu.be/-pT_NsgfUvI
no subtlety here nor should there be, nothing has changed since this was written, realistically it has got much much worse
Can‘t find words...this is the ultimate song..🙋♀️
this song was used in a tv show about sex aids - just the musical bit - not the actual singing - i laughed to myself.
This song is dedicated to Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson
Timeless!
Better decide which side you're on. 1979 has returned
More relevant than ever
in my country too unfortunately
No it is not relevant today as it was 40 years ago. Today we have legal gay marriage, anti-discrimination laws and the most vocal LGBT community on the planet. And do not tell me that trans individuals are the same as gay men or women. Totally different issues so do not try to sweep it all under a rainbow carpet. You haters. Cat people. Stinkers.
Fuck Brexit and Fuck Remain
two cheeks of the same arsehole
classic divide and rule
Who ever you vote for, you get the government
R.I.P Danny Kustow
I first heard this song at the Berlin Tolstefanz in 1978. I was having a political discussion with a friend this morning and the lyrics came to mind so here I am again, reminded of just how powerful those words were then and still.
¿Can Tom Robinson say the N word?
He should not.
To everyone who says that this is as relevant today as it was in the 70s, it is not. At least not for most people. It is still relevant mind you but things have gotten better for a lot of minorities.
One of the greatest songs ever written!
Unfortunately still relevant today as it was over 40 years ago!
Freedom to choose!
good sound !!! good music !!!
Γεια σου ρε Κωστή - κορυφαίο !
So the Left opened the floodgates and ruined the nation.
F'ing BRILLIANT.
Loved this album all those years ago.
And here we are in the 21st century and again facing tyranny.
Our politicians about to sell us out to billionaires and the alt-right (fascist lite) spreading doublethink and hate. Wake up people! Everything you take for granted is about to be taken from you.
This was fantastic at the time - I was a young punk and this was so powerful
2:45 -- how did they manage to get Rees Mogg's voice on the recording in 1978?
Darkness the police idem...muy buenos!
"Freedom for black and white" / "Freedom from the reds and the blacks and the criminals"
Unless the word "black" has different meanings here, these lyrics contradict themselves.
... the latter part is said by a satirical caricature of a reactionary gentleman written just to boost the underlying message of the whole song
I never thought of that as satire. So what's the message of the song?
Of course, it could always be a reference to Stendhal's classic 1830 novel "Le Rouge Et Le Noir" which is about France's Post-Napoleonic struggle for power between the clerical (the church) and the secular (the irreligious) aspects of society.
This kicks ass!
got this LP when i was 14, nothing changes.
Very portentous , owing to the hosts being the modern day book burners
esnifame
3:25 - the predates- and predicts- the final quarter of Floyd's "Wall" - ie "in the flesh". "waiting for the worms"...
Nice video. However you should take instructions from inplix website if you want to learn how to make it easily.
Thanks. Vital.
I always wish he said left wing cunts instead of scum, it would've rhymed so much better
Prophetic!!!!!
It wasn't that bad
I was 18 and living in London when this came out and going to Rock Against Racism and Anti-Nazi gigs. TRB just ignited our souls at that time. Saw them a couple of times. Absolute legends from that time.
This sounds a lot like Santana in places...and is more relevant than ever.
More relevant today than in 1978
Irony...... Section 47....Now TR part of the BBC elite. Very comfortably off. Probably paid off his mortgage and even got a nice pension. Makes one think.....
TR is a truly authentic artist that made a great contribution to arts and culture. The spirit lives inside of us and artists like TR give us hope and inspiration.
Are we sure this song wasn't recorded recently?
That was a joke.
so was my comment Lindon.
Well it seems to have Rees-Mogg's voice on it at 2:45
Anyone got the bass tabs?

Ive clicked the link, but the page says that no sheet music, tabs or chords are available
I am so sorry. I just checked and you are right. However, it can be requested (but maybe at a price?)
No problem at all! Im gonna try that now, thanks alot! :)
You are welcome. Wishing you success.
Yeah!!!
These songs are always relevant. Oppression must always be resisted.
Here because of a tabletop war-game of all things...My Gods was this brilliant stuff. Relevant then . Relevant now....
one of the best records to come out of the 70s
Thought about this song today and all that's going on with #trump and #brexit. Still relevant in its way.
Awesome groove. Completely disagree with the sophomoric "philosophy", though, but that just proves music is above all that shit.
seriously.
Then you really don't get it. Perhaps you will come April fool's day 2019.
The sad thing is that this is just as relevant today as it was 40 years ago when i was 16.
Even more so today, stand up and fight for your country, before it's taken from you.
The lyrics to this get you banned if you post them. The N word
Still relevant, sadly.
MR TRUCULENT SAY !!!! Tom Robison Band, a great band . SICK OF LOVE SONGS. How about Hate songs. : MR TRUCULENT saw him at the Newcastle city hall on his first tour, then and at Sunderland Mayfair and at the old opera house at West Gate Road Newcastle. I have the rising free EP and the imported from the USA "Power in the darkness" double 12" EP set as well as the UK EMI album, "Power in the darkness" Thay even played the rising free EP Glad to be gay on Radio Luxembourg. But not on the BBC. MR TRUCULENT is NOT GAY.
My God!!!!! All those years gone by and it still sounds like yesterday!!! His bass lines, his voice, guitars and drums. He's been in my life for so long. I was like 13, swedish and told my mom I would like to have long hair and a leather jacket and playing Power In The Darkness with TRB. I thought his lyrics was cool even if I could'nt understand it. I was a kid. I've kept Tom in my heart for so long. Just look at him!!!! Now I'm past 50, still bangin' the shit out of my guitar and understanding that he's been one of the biggest impacts in my life, heart and soul.... I love this guy. It would be a dream come true just to sit down and have a pint with him. Word is not enough. Thank you for being there for me all these years. Big hugs from Sweden in the Winter of 16. Jonas
Trying to find a Tom Robinson song other than "2 4 6 8 motorway" but when this started I thought it was "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth 😕 😅
some outfit in their day lids, great music that asked questions
It is sad but true - all this did not change anything - the power is by those assholes that own all the money - the big money rules the world - shareholders that can't get enough ( they want 200millions instead of 100millions) and they think they have a right cause they are rich - thats all.
Rip Danny not played this for 30 years lovin it
ever since the brexit-referendum, I kept thinking about this song
The version Tom's performing live at the moment mentions current issues like Brexit
Because the elite have mugged us. You just haven't grasped it yet.
Frightening lies from the other side?
Yow! Love this song. Come back to it whenever I need little boost.
The Lyrics Are Wrong, Where It Says "Freedom from harassment, intimidation" In The Second Verse, It Should Say "Freedom from elitism, male domination" And They Are Wrong Where It Says "Freedom from leftwing layabouts and liberals", It Should Say "Freedom from long haired layabouts and students"
correct.
Lol it felt very strange to me, the song would put alongside all these marginalised communities and folks the liberals, essentially Labour.
And Freedom from the likes of you!! lol, JK.
@jackintheboxgaming thats the truth!
Hi there, its more then 30 years ago, when i heard this the first time. Today in Germany this song is very important for unity and peace!
Depressingly relevant.
the world could use more angry young men right now......
Changed my life when I was 17 back in '79.
Me too man.
You lucky geezer, I'm 18 now and I wish I coulda been in your shoes
You are in our shoes mate
my kind of mix new and old but all classics
I heard this back in 1979 & loved it! TRB are one of the greatest bands ever!Thier music is still relevant now as it was then! With songs about equality for women, LGBT & all ethinic groups!Battles we are still fighting today! How glad to be gay is not the LGBT anthum is beyond me.
more true no in 2015 than in 1979
Yep ! 👍
1/10
Needs more Cowbell

Might just be the Greatest Rock Song of all time!
Great Song! Whatever happened to the Revolution???
We won, thats what happened, capitalism world-wide is falling
@Electric Warrior If only.................
@Patrick LLabbe It's still alive and kicking. We just got old and missed it. The kids are ok.
the revolution will not be televised ....
Stand up and fight for your rights! Absolutly right!!!
Ωραίο τραγούδι, ευχαριστούμε για το upload !
Tom Robinson and his band are legends.
wow. was this really written in late seventies? tune is as appropriate today!
It's never to late
The Revolution is coming.People are waking up (I hope its not too late)
so aktuell. aktueller geht es gar nicht.
4 Jahre später und man wünscht sich sogar 2014 zurück... Trump, Brexit, AfD... Heilige Scheiße es geht bergab...
Brilliant and relevant today as it was in 1978.
exactly….. maybe even more today
Great song! The satire at 2.44 could be UKIP's manifesto only they wouldn't see it as satire.
I thought that ☺👍
