Robbie Robertson - Sacrifice Lyrics

You know we have a million stories to tell
I'm just one of a million or more stories that could be told

Sacrifice your freedom
Sacrifice your prayer
Take away your language
Cut off all your hair
Sacrifice the loved ones
Who always stood by me
Stranded in the wasteland
Set my spirit free

My name is Leonard Peltier
I am a Lakota and Anishnabe
And I am living in the United States penitentiary
Which is the swiftest growing
Indian reservations in the country

I have been in prison since 1976
For an incident that took place on the Oglala-Lakota Nation
There was a shoot-out between members of the American Indian Movement
And The FBI and the local Sheriffs State Troopers
Two agents were killed and one Indian was murdered

Three of us were charged with the deaths of the FBI agents
My co-defendants were found not-guilty by reasons of self-defense
My case was separated and I was found guilty before a jury of non-Indian people
The prosecutor stated that they did not know who killed their agents
Nor did he know what participation Leonard Peltier may have played in it
But someone has to pay for the crime

There's a lot of nights that I lay in my cell
And I can't understand why this hell this hell and this terror
That I have been going through for twenty-one years hasn't ended

Sacrifice your freedom
Sacrifice your prayer
Take away your language
Cut off all your hair
Sacrifice the loved ones
Who always stood by me
Stranded in the wasteland
Set my spirit free

But yet I know in my heart that someone has to pay sacrifice
To make things better for our people
The sacrifice I have made when I really sit down to think about it
Is nothing compared to what our people a couple hundred years ago
Or fifty years ago or twenty-five years ago have made
Some gave their lives
Some had to stand there and watch their children die in their arms
So the sacrifice I have made is nothing compared to those

I've gone too far now to start backing down
I don't give up
Not till my people are free will I give up
And if I have to sacrifice some more
Then I sacrifice some more

The Yankee must pay...5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's inmates!!! The white man has destroyed an amazing native Indian culture, poisoned them, raped their lands

  3. D.... D....

Lenorard Peltier must be freed. His imprisonment is unjust and without evidence. Have people forgotten? FREE LENORARD PELTIER!

  9. x.... N....

Last I heard Leonard Peltier is terminally ill in prison and still they will not release him. I do believe he was set up and wrongly accused. I believe he deserves the right to pass away with his daughter and other family members around him. Not in a scummy prison where he gets treated badly.

  10. M.... G....

Free such a loved brave man

  21. T.... K....

This man's story is heartbreaking and is a reflection of what is wrong with the system that is. "someone has to pay for the crime" despite an unfair trial, unsubstantiated testimony, and lack of evidence. How have we not worked to make this right?! He needs to be freed, pardoned, apologized to, and compensated. This is his life ticking by; it is irretrievable and invaluable.

  22. R.... ....

    FREE LEONARD PELTIER!!!!!!!!!!

  23. K.... S....

President Obama.  This man has been held too long for a crime he did not commit.  Let him go home to his family.      xozone

    K.... S....

Hopefully Leonard will make it home after Obama's term is over !

    K.... S....

Soon as Pres O sworn in  he should have freed Leonard Peltier.  Actually Clinton was supposed to do that but duh.      Way past time.

    K.... S....

Karen Sue obama lied to us.
He went out to the oyate and on the rez....said he would have our backs.
    He lied .
He was just like the wasicus who preceded him.
To the fed red lives aint shit.

    K.... S....

    Pres O said no...

    K.... S....

@Wendell Smith Many hoped that would happen... but Leonard is still locked up in 2019 :-(

  24. W.... S....

Free Leonard Peltier, President Obama ! Let the act of oppression imposed upon Leonard Peltier finally come to an end with an act of humanity on your part ! At the end of your last term in office you have the power to finally let Leonard Peltier go home. The injustices of governments in Canada and the United States should be held accountable and honour the treaties and share the resources from this land !

  25. T.... ....

"I'm just one of a million or more stories that could be told."
That's the saddest part of this whole song. After learning his story, and that there's a million or more stories like his...that's just sad...

  26. m.... ....

My family worked with Native American's in Chicago, and both lived on a rez for a long time. While I am not a Native American, I feel more powerfully about the movement then any other movement apart from the environmentalists.

  27. D.... M....

I'm not Native American, but I know the difference between right and wrong. Leonard Peltier has been our family's hero for a long time.
