Rivers, Johnny - Memphis Lyrics

Long distance information, give me Memphis, Tennessee
Help me find a party that tried to get in touch with me
She could not leave a number, but I know who placed the call
'Cause my uncle took a message, and he wrote it on the wall

Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd call me here from Memphis, Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high upon a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi bridge

Last time I saw Marie, she was wavin' me goodbye
With "hurry-home" drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
But we were pulled apart, because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis, Tennessee

Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
Marie is only six years old, information, please
Try to put me through to her in Memphis, Tennessee

Let’s see. What would it mean that in this “interview” following Mr. Rivers’s perfomance of “Memphis”, that DICK Clark singles out Lonnie Mack as being (in addition to Rivers), “another guy who recently recorded this song”, without laying full credit to Chuck Berry, the man who invented (wrote) it, played it, and sang it with more soul than all the covers of the tune put together? What could it mean??

This is a very good version but Chuck Berry should have been the one and he wasn't even mention. Lonny Mack did the musical but Chuck Berry was the King!

  35. R.... H....

    Always loved this song

  36. T.... C....

Lonnie Mack played it with fire

  37. s.... ....

As a member of the millennial generation, I firmly believe this music is much better than my own.

    s.... ....

As a member of his generation, I wholeheartedly agree! I was at the Whisky several times in '68-69. Along with Roxy's, the Rainbow Bar & Grill and The Orr House in Santa Monica there were a lot of great places to go. A bit further west in Oxnard there was a place named The Carousel and in late '68 you could see Ike & Tina Turner on Fridays and Saturday nights for a cover charge of $2. That's also where I first heard "Black Magic Woman!" In the early 70s the Carousel changed to Country Rock.

    s.... ....

@Larry Worsham The Ashgrove on melrose!

  46. K.... G....

Lipsynced but cool! His pickup switch is in the wrong position for that tone and that Gibson ES335 is not plugged in! Lol! Still a great version of the Chuck Berry tune. So is Lonnie Mack’s!

    K.... G....

Every artist on Bandstand lip synced. In the 60's record companies wanted their artists to lip sync on TV.

A most handsome man and loved his music

  48. M.... ....

Guitar not plugged in so is he lip syncing? No mice. Secret agent man my favorite

Great demonstration of the coolest guitar of all time: the Gibson ES-335! Too bad it's not plugged in and Johnny is lip syncing!! But hey, that's how they did a lot of live TV in those days. Even the Beatles lip synced. (but not on Ed Sullivan, thankfully).

  94. P.... P....

No more than decent version of the Chuck Berry two-chord masterpiece. One of his most poignant lyrics ...' with hurry-home drops on her cheeks that trickled from her eyes...' Whatever else he was, he was rock'n'roll's greatest poet.

  95. J.... B....

    Tuff stuff for sure!

  96. w.... a....
