Rise Against - Audience Of One Lyrics

I can still remember
The words and what they meant
As we etched them with our fingers
In years of wet cement
The days blurred into each other
Though everything seemed clear
We cruised along at half speed
But then we shifted gears

We ran like vampires from a thousand burning suns
But even then we should have stayed
But we ran away
Now all my friends are gone
Maybe we've outgrown all the things that we once loved
Runaway
But what are we running from?
A show of hands from those in this audience of one
Where have they gone?

Identities assume us
As nine and five add up
Synchronizing watches
To the seconds that we lost
I looked up and saw you
I know that you saw me
We froze but for a moment
In empathy

I brought down the sky for you but all you did was shrug
You gave my emptiness a name
But you ran away
Now all my friends are gone
Maybe we've outgrown all the things that we once loved
Runaway
But what are we running from?
A show of hands from those in this audience of one
Where have they gone?

We're all ok, until the day we're not
The surface shines, while the inside rots
We raced the sunset and we almost won
We slammed the brakes, but the wheels went on

We ran away
Now all my friends are gone
Maybe we've outgrown all the things that we once loved
Runaway
But what are we running from?
A show of hands from those in this audience of one
Where have they gone?

  8. c.... ....

This video is so funny. Shot from a pretty closed minded view of how they think America works. If they only knew.... Good song, not so much on the video. But hey, its my opinion. youre entitled to your own.

  9. K.... ....

I don't like Rise Against, or early 2000s pop punk in general for that matter, but this is one of two songs I like by them

  10. V.... X....

Still love this song I remember first listening on much music late night and I was in highschool Nostalgia

  11. J.... B....

    This song is about divorce

  12. J.... S....

I love how meaningful this song can be. The interpretation for me is always outgrowing your friends and familial relationships. Not knowing who you are... Identities assume us - I was always a people pleaser. I didn't see the point in standing up for myself because I felt that it wasn't worth causing trouble. That there are bigger issues in this world, that my friends and family should come first than my own well-being. I've always had anxiety and depression, self cutting and drinking would numb the pain away. I stayed in an abusive relationship for 3 years and was sexually assaulted by my best friend. Yet this entire time I blamed myself for everything, I felt like if I didn't stand up for myself then that no one would believe me now. When I finally voiced it, no one understood. They said it was my fault and questioned my role in it. I believed that I caused all this. I just got back from a 4 day music festival and I was surrounded by thousands of people. I was next to 3 of my friends. Yet none of them realized that behind my sunglasses and bandanna that I was crying during the show. I never felt so alone ... and all I could think of was this song.

  14. N.... s....

When I was younger I did not realize that this is one of the deepest music videos to date

  15. M.... R....

This power formation i loved song 😊💪💪😎

  19. s.... p....

I found this song four years ago.....at that point.....i was a dish jockey in a kitchen making minimum wage, still in contact with my friends......four years later, and now I'm doing factory work....and all but one of my friends from school are gone....
    **sigh**
    'just living the lyrics'
Never thought I'd eat those words in this way....
    **through a cracked smile** Life's a bitch, ain't it?

  20. g.... ....

It saddens me to know that after all these years it still has relevance
maybe more these days that it had in the past

when do we finaly made progress? will we ever?

  21. S.... V....

I’m an OIF/OEF combat vet, idk man. I just smoke a lot of pot to feel emotions basically, and coming home to people who don’t give a shit about me or what so many of my brothers have sacrificed for them and U.S. interests, Freedom, security, recourses, and the fuel we use to run our society doesn’t come free.

    S.... V....

    What a stupid Nickname !

  22. R.... B....

Seeing the world being ran by a child doesn't seem too far off. Cheeky XD

  23. P.... C....

One of the best catalogs post 2000! Others inc The Menzingers, Banner Pilot, Alkaline Trio.

    Goddamn it Rise Against.
That fucking second where he closed the gates really cut deep and made me tear up

  26. J.... R....

This song has not aged a day. If anything, it's become more relevant to today's issues. I love Rise Against.

  27. 4.... ....

I’ve recently had to cut ties with a guy who used to be really cool and fun to hang out with, but kept asking me and my friends for money even though he kept quitting jobs and doing horribly in school. It just got worse, so I cut them out completely, and had to sacrifice all my other friends to do so as well.

This song really speaks to me now...

  28. T.... S....

I know who I think of when I hear of this song

  29. .... ....

Look at your bedroom. Its just like that, a fucking bedroom. I dont like the fact that his four private walls are seen as a holy place, nor that he is seen as a god for some people. He showed the most natural and real image of all artists ive ever seen, he himself always projected that picture of him being the same you are, human. They didnt feel special, and Kurt wouldnt have wanted his bedroom to become a fucking museum.

  30. M.... M....

Timeless song. A favourite when I was in highschool

  31. H.... R....

Nice to see a Pop Punk band can still make a political statement in song about change and nostalgia.

  32. k.... ....

    2019 y'all 👊

  33. D.... H....

    Rise Against Socialism.

  34. G.... B....

This song embodies the difficulty of losing the purpose and importance you have at war when you come home to me. Im no veteran but im close to a lot and its really crazy to hear that the hardest part of being a soldier is leaving.

  35. J.... M....

Valeu!

  36. m.... ....

This song released when I was 17 years-old. It quickly became my favorite song of my senior year in HS. Now, 11 years later, it means much more to me than it ever did.

  37. S.... M....

This is there best song by far!

  38. J.... E....

Still one of my favorites from them.

  39. R.... T....

  43. W.... P....

I wonder how this video will hold up now that people have seemed to forget how bad GWB was. PS kudos for finding such a lookalike kid.

  44. b.... j....

"We're okay! til the day we're not."

  45. A.... Y....

    Masters of symbolism

  46. G.... J....

For all those trying to figure out what the song is about... the great thing about music is that its about how ever it makes you feel, if you sit here and try to decipher the meaning of every verse you're missing the point. Whether its about politics, society, friends or a relationship you're all right in your feelings... That's what music is, a ministry of emotion and we comprehend it the way we need to in our own minds.

  47. B.... S....

This music video is more relevant today than it has ever been.

  48. R.... D....

as I said for the Ghost Notes Symphonies Version, I want to die, so they will play it at my funeral

  49. J.... J....

This was on the other day when I was jacking off at work while "fake pooping"

  50. j.... h....

Still one of my all time favorite songs... Makes me think of graduating highschool and falling out with all my friends though.. O_o

  51. M.... M....

Now all my friends are gone... True af. Since high school I lost my mom, most my friends, my baby mama, and the girl I thought I love. But hey 2019 is my year 😁😎

  52. L.... ....

If people aren't still listening to this in 2018...that is a damn shame.

  53. S.... G....

It’s about the loss of innocence. What better way to show that than through political nuance and war; however, you can apply it to plenty of scenarios in your life.

  54. P.... B....

Why when I see this young boy playing am I so reminded of Trump and his handling of international relationships? Just saying....

  55. S.... ....

    Little men, big guns

  56. C.... C....

Anyone still listening in 2018? I'll listen to this one even on 2019!😍Rise against is always my favourite!

  57. D.... ....

I like the lyrics hate the video

  58. L.... S....

Has someone ever realised the fact that a kid has brutally murdered Rise Against and that maybe from that day on we have been seeing a fake band every time?

  59. G.... R....

    ZACHARY HAKIM

  60. B.... W....

Simple, I'll love this band all my life.

  61. B.... ....

Man that kid is a god

  62. E.... G....

I’m with DomsBlading, how political this video may seem I take I a complete different way. I first heard this song back in 2009-2010, still in high school and used to jam to this song with one of the greatest friends I ever had. Through all those good ass times, being a kid when their was nothing to worry about but having some good grades is something I sure as hell miss more than anything. Every time I listen to this song it pokes at my heart, the words hit me like a ton of bricks and has me wanting to do it all over again. One day I’ll realize that holding onto the past is something I can’t do anymore but until then I’d do it all over again if I was given the chance.

  63. C.... R....

    I fkn love this band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. O.... O....

    I wouldn’t be where I am today without this band’s music ✊

  65. S.... O....

Murr from impactical jokers is a pretty good singer

  66. T.... C....

This shit hit me hard graduating highschool. Lost everything and everyone.

  67. T.... P....

Am I the only one that finds it interesting that the lyrics on their own suggest the song is about growing up but the video makes them take a more political meaning?

    T.... P....

    why not both?

  68. m.... b....

I longingly await Ghost Light symphony acoustitversion of this song...

  69. E.... M....

Música top para curtir jogando Mad Max!

  70. N.... N....

A child being in charge of the White House.... even more applicable to today's America

  71. V.... 1....

I still cry after the high school years that I wasted playing video games.

  72. j.... h....

    It's a good Song.

  73. M.... B....

This NEEDS to be in an "IT: Part 2" movie soundtrack. Apart from the political standpoint this is a straight up cry for a lost youth and friendships. A perfect summary for all those things you can feel while reading King's novel.

  74. S.... F....

Truth about my love life right here...

  75. L.... H....

I see they're going on tour wish the was coming a bit closer to West Virginia

  76. S.... ....

  81. M.... C....

Still gives me chills in 2018!! 😍🤘

  82. K.... k....

My first rise against song 🙂

  83. R.... C....

The video is obviously about the government's childish and selfish ways but i don't understand the song... well the last part makes sense. "We are all okay until the day we are not, the surface shines while the inside rots".

  84. D.... M....

I heard this song for the first time on MTV when I was in grade 11

  85. s.... p....

lagu wajib pas pulang kuliah dulu 😊, good old days...

  86. p.... ....

You give my emptiness a name! GOOD job Timmy!

  87. C.... F....

    your music still inspires us

  88. A.... M....

3:04 to 3:09, in that five seconds of just video without even sound I cried let alone their lyrics

  89. p.... g....

this is my favorite song from rise against

  90. B.... T....

Damn this song makes me depressed. It already made me sad about friends who drifted apart when I was younger, but now that I'm 20 and I'm not in school anymore, it hits so much harder. I miss seeing my friends every day and I miss not having to worry so much about my future and slaving away at shitty jobs that try to erase individuality. Friends who I thought would stay in my life? I haven't talked to many of them in years. As a matter of fact, I actually barely talked to some of them while they were still around because I was too shy and scared to approach them. Seriously, don't take your friends from school for granted or say "I'll try tomorrow" because time will slap you in the face and all these friends you love will fade out of your life. Some of these friends have managed to fade back in and I've actually become better friends with a few of them, but still.
    Growing up sucks.

  91. J.... S....

Reminds of when the economy was collapsing!

  92. L.... J....

    Can't wait for Bluesfest 2018!!!

  93. M.... L....

Don't let anyone tell you a definitive meaning for a Rise Against song. Frequently, Tim states that his songs are often written as love/personal songs that are given a political twist, or vise versa, and they can carry both intended meanings coherently. Another prime example would be Bridges - political or love song? Both.

  94. d.... K....

    классные! За вашу позицию!

  95. B.... M....

This is the song that made me a fan. I'll never forget. Rise Against 2018

  96. A.... C....

And here I am in 2018 ... Wow

  97. K.... ....

Бл, клипы рок-групп 2009-го года несут более глубокий смысловой посыл, чем реп-клипы 2017-го.

  98. M.... C....

For some reason, the music video makes me think the song is about political correctness. Though, I'm not entirely sure. I can definitely understand seeing this song as something regarding the relationships we used to have. Things change in life. You don't get to do all the same things you had the liberty of doing in your youth. You're grown up, so you now have to live a more sophisticated life to go along with the knowledge you've gained. It's best to accept it and just live life.

  99. M.... B....

Their songs can fit nearly every street racing game, don't you think?

  100. S.... B....

The only band that can rival green day and the offspring but so underrated
