Rick Springfield - Speak To The Sky Lyrics

Speak to the sky when ever things go wrong
and you know you're not talkin' to the air, to the air
and the world will look better from up there

Speak to the sky 'cause things can get ya down
and you know when you're talkin' to the Lord, to the Lord
the world will look better than before

And if I stumble and it seems that I am blind
or if the road I'm on seems awful hard to find
and though my conversation doesn't always rhyme
I always try to find some time to .......

Speak to the sky and tell you how I feel
and to know sometimes what I say ain't right
It's all right
cause I speak to the sky every night

And if I stumble and it seems that I am blind
or if the road I'm on seems awful hard to find
and though my conversation doesn't always rhyme
I always try to find some time to .......

Speak to the sky and tell you how I feel
and to know sometimes what I say ain't right
It's all right
cause I speak to the sky every night

Speak to the sky when ever things go wrong
and you know you're not talkin' to the air, to the air
and the world will look better from up there

Rick Springfield Speak To The Sky Comments
  1. S.... S....

    Such a cutie

  2. D.... ....

    ?? Imagine hearing Jessie's Girl and Love Somebody a million times over the years, and then out of the blue you hear this one. What next, footage of Chris Cornell singing the Wiggles theme?

  3. m.... ....

    And he ruined it by making a pub song.

  4. p.... j....

    Was he a Religious Nut?

  5. p.... t....

    I love this beautiful song since the day it came out from Rick Springfield

  6. b.... D....

    Hello from Tokoroa New Zealand

  7. U.... D....

    A very interesting song, seeing as how Rick has been suffering from depression nearly all of his life and attempted suicide at 17 (the noose didn't hold and he fell). I think that this song comes from a very good, optimistic place in his heart that may have kept Rick alive all these years, despite his still ongoing depression.

    LOOKS LIKE THE ROLLER-COASTER AT BLACKPOOL IN THE BACK/G?????

    P.... T....

    THERE ARE SEVERAL ROLLERS IN BLACKPOOL....

  9. P.... T....

    TODAY;
    I DISCOVERED THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE MORE TWISTED THAN ME;
    PEOPLE LIKE TO TELL ME THINGS;
    SECRET THINGS ABOUT THEMSELVES;
    THEIR DESIRES;
    THEIR FANTASIES;
    THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL FANTASY;
    A WOMAN WAS DREAMING ABOUT BEING AN ATHLETE;
    NOT JUST ANY ATHLETE;
    A HURDLER;
    A BLACK OLYMPIC HURDLER ATHLETE;
    MY MIND SNAPPED TO THE REALISATION THAT SHE WAS GOING TO HAVE GENETIC ISSUES WITH WHICH TO DEAL;
    ETHNICITY AND BIOLOGY;
    A RARE COMBINATION FOR CHANGE;
    LUCKILY, THERE WAS MEDICAL ATTENTION NEARBY;
    PSYCHIATRY, WAS NEVER MY STRONG SUIT;
    WHY DO PEOPLE ENJOY BURDENING ME WITH THEIR SECRETS?????
    WHY???????
    THAT PROBLEM IS MORE COMPLICATED THAN MY FEET;
    MY FEET STORY IS MUCH MORE CONFINED AND SPIRITUAL;
    RATHER THAN EMOTIONAL....
    THE BURDEN THAT I CARRY....
    LIKE THE WORLD WANTS TO TELL ME THINGS....
    SCARY THINGS....
    THAT MAKE ME EVEN MORE SLEEPLESS THAN I ALREADY AM NOW SUFFERING EVEN MORE FROM SLEEPLESSNESS....

    P.... T....

    HOSPITALS ARE DANGEROUS PLACES....

    P.... T....

    AND I CAN'T THINK OF A SONG ABOUT HOSPITALS.....

    P.... T....

    UNLESS....THIS SONG COVERS ALL THE BASES....

  10. D.... R....

    I had pics of him and David Cassidy on my dresser mirror in my room!🛏😚

  11. H.... S....

    Rick's first hit, and an awesome one, at that, both musically and lyrically. Thanks for the fabulous memories of a simpler, less complicated time. Bring back t hose days, please

  12. M.... S....

    MAN, I WAS 10 YEARS OLD THEN AND STILL REMEMBER THIS SONG .

  13. S.... D....

    Great vocialist.

  16. J.... B....

    Lord have mercy it's funny how this song just popped in my head thinking about old music and sitting back and watching videos.

  17. c.... k....

    I remember this like it was yesterday. I was 12

  18. T.... S....

    Love this song and I had a huge crush on Rick. He was appearing on a music program called GTK which meant getting to know I never missed it and shortly after that came Happening 70

  19. b.... ....

    Old Rick has come a long way from his Christian Music days. You have to catch him on episodes of the cable show, Californicaton. Rick gets down and dirty.

  20. M.... G....

    I have no memory of this song from 1971. I heard this cool song on HD oldies radio for the first time a few days ago. I came to this site to see if it is the same Rick Springfield from the 80s. Sure 'nuff it's him.

  21. W.... W....

    I had never heard this song until I bought a bundle of 45s. This was the only decent song among them.

  22. m.... ....

    Do you have any old clips of a singer named Dick Roman? He made a lot of TV appearances in Australia in the late 60s/early-mid 70s.

  23. D.... O....

    When I was young I heard he wrote this when his dad was sick and his dad got better my dad didn't die till I was almost 50 I speak to him in the sky almost every day

  24. J.... H....

    Early seventies brought me here when I stumbled upon this by the rock doc🎼🎵🎵🎵🎷🎸🎹📻📻📻

  25. E.... M....

    I look forward to singing this song publicly, and introducing it to a new audience.

  26. S.... J....

    He wrote this song for his father, who unfortunately didn't live to see him become a success with his later hit "Jessie's Girl." Rick gives the details in his memoir "Late Late At Night", a book I recommend highly.
    "Speak To The Sky" was inspired by the change in the lives of Rick's family and his father becoming a shadow of his former self.

  27. C.... M....

    I love this song !!

  28. K.... P....

    I love to dance to this song😊😊

  29. K.... P....

    I love Rick like Crazy.

  30. K.... P....

    I love love love Rick.

  31. K.... P....

    I love love love this guy.cool song

  32. A.... B....

    I love this song. Brings back so many memories of my younger days.

  33. 7.... ....

    Is that Peter Knok, acca izzy Foreal,on Bass. I played with Izzy in a north coast band going back 10years ago.Great footage

  34. E.... M....

    This is the song that put Springfield on the map all those years ago. And it's still one of his best!

  35. n.... ....

    good thing he didn't stay in that cultural wasteland called Australia - where good artists spend years swimming around a fishbowl appeasing the same old boring people.

  36. S.... F....

    As an Atheist, this is my favourite religious song...great track!

  37. R.... F....

    i simply LOVE THIS! Thanks Rick....you are so handsome too.....Wow!!!!!!

  38. a.... w....

    Awesome song I remember it when it was released.!!

  39. D.... C....

    Pity we lost a great musician when rick left for the us and went into telecvision

    D.... C....

    Umm ... He never quit playing music.

    D.... C....

    He's still a great musician

  40. R.... W....

    used to know a boy who looked a lot like him as he looks here

    R.... W....

    Fascinating !!

  41. J.... S....

    great song..

  42. C.... W....

    Happy Birthday Rick

  43. L.... S....

    one of his first songs I heard from Rick, loved him since.

    L.... S....

    Me too been a fan since

  44. M.... N....

    Wow. Just. Wow. Stumbled upon this.  Remember from my junior year in HS,  Loved this song.  Sang it ad nauseum back in the day. Loved Rick Springfield. Talking to the Lord and the world will look better than before. YES!

    M.... N....

    I swear I have never heard this song but saw it landed on the billboard top 100 year end 1972, I just can't believe he was around back then, lol

  45. h.... ....

    He came walking up to me at a Promotion at Musicland in Mpls. in 1972...
    Told me his Name and asked me if I would like a Signed 45 with this song on it...
    I still have it...

  46. W.... ....

    He must have been playing 70s country rock then! The same deal with Roxy Music! Both left "country" and evolved.

    W.... ....

    This was when he started getting soft. When he was lead guitar in ZOOT the previous year, it was hard rock. When he left, that was the end of a great band. Check out their version of Eleanor Rigby.

    W.... ....

    Roxy Music was never anywhere near being 'country music'...except to the extent that the band came from a country [England]

    W.... ....

    I never thought Roxy Music were country. They once had John Wheton and Bill Bruford in the band. Both had played in King Crimson. Bill was in Yes. John was in Uriah Heep.

    W.... ....

    rocket science sounds a bit countryish, too.

    W.... ....

    What are you talking about?
    ROxy Music stop playing 'country'? When did they ever play country?
    By the way, Country Life is not a country album.

  47. s.... n....

    Super rare footage of Rick at age 22! Really a treat for us fans that go way back. Thanks for this!!

    s.... n....

    What a great song from our Aussie Boy Rick Springfield. He was my first crush and I bet I am not the only one. ..

    s.... n....

    Cute as heck, that boy.

  48. p.... b....

    the seekers do a brilliant version of this great song.

  49. D.... L....

    Have always loved this song - and even moreso now. :) <3

  50. w.... c....

    cool song of my young days

  51. E.... S....

    strange! But he is still hot and if u like this kinds music and are from this era then its for you

  52. W.... ....

    After growing to love Hey Pinky, The Freak, Evil Child, Eleanor Rigby etc. This was a real WTF moment for me.

  53. A.... B....

    May just be my memory going out, did he ever use a tuba in one of the recordings of this song? For some reason I remember a version {without the guitar solo like this one has) that had a distict ompa type tuba sound in the recording... Or maybe I burned out too many brain cells in the 70's/80's.... LOL

  54. B.... S....

    Buncha heehaws

  55. S.... A....

    Love this song!

  56. M.... ....

    This was the very first song I heard from Rick Springfield. It was on a K-Tel or Ronco 33 1/3 vinyl Long Play Stereo Record Album in early 70's. Funny thing ....I STILL own the album and still know and love this song. These albums usually had 22 artists of different genres or styles on them.It's how my music interest developed so diverse and eclectic.

  57. c.... r....

    Cute! Still cute! Love his songs.

  58. P.... E....

    Aussie Aussie Aussie, oui oui oui

  59. g.... ....

    This man sang and looked like an angel! Long live Rick!

  60. T.... ....

    How did you FIND this one? absolutely wonderful !! Rick can KICK anybody's butt when it comes to rock n' roll! He keeps on rocking STILL .. ALL the rest are just 7-UP - Never had it ~ Never WILL!! haha! (humor-r-r)

  61. s.... ....

    On this day in 1972 {September 16th} Rick Springfield performed "Speak to the Sky" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand...
    One month earlier on August 5th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #14 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100...
    It reached #6 in his native Australia and #10 in Canada...
    R.I.P. M. Clark...

  62. S.... Z....

    Right.
    Speak To Sky...
    Rick.
    Sings Top Songs.

  63. j.... ....

    Awesome. Still sounds good to me.

  64. j.... ....

    You jerks out there, he wrote this during his dad's rehab from Brain damage after a ruptured ulcer in his stomach that was attached to an artery. It shows a lot of heart.

  65. W.... T....

    Love this Feel good song

  66. M.... V....

    Awesome

  67. J.... ....

    Who remembers Rick Springfield (briefly) as Zak, Apollo's younger brother who was killed by the Cylons in the first episode of the original Battlestar Galactica?

    J.... ....

    Lol, took 8 years to get a reply but I DO REMEMBER ZAK!

  68. J.... ....

    @apartfromthecrowd - what about Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky"?

  69. D.... S....

    @punchcar This song was on the flip side of a 45 record I had back when I was about 9 years old. I simply love it and will never forget this! I use to harmonize with my sisters to it. God Bless!

  70. D.... S....

    @punchcar I have loved this song for many years. I had it on a 45 record. It was on the flip side! God Bless!

  71. C.... S....

    I know RIGHT???

  72. C.... K....

    It amazes the direction he went after this. He went commercial in order to find fame. I like this style better. True to the nature of what was happening during that time period. He should bring some of this style back with a bit more rock, we need more positive music for the new age.

  73. S.... ....

    @1BarefootCowboy
    Wer ist sprengfeld?ich werde dir sagen was er ist,er ist ein mann,der frauen stiehlt.Er hat meine linda gestohlen und wird er's zahlen!!!

    stop>>

  74. W.... ....

    No wonder this album was a flop!

  75. G.... O....

    Wow! I've seen plenty guys nowadays with that look...The 70's are back! looool

  76. f.... ....

    I really like this version. I bought his "Beginnings" album when it came out and it had some awesome stuff on it. Mother Can You Carry Me? was great and The Unhappy Ending (Lead Me On) was truly amazing (though it was terribly sad.) BTW-Thanks for posting !!!

  77. 9.... ....

    This is an awesome song; a much better version than the one on the record with the tubas!!!! Rick is still a real cutie!!!

  78. c.... ....

    What fascinates me is that Rick Springfield looked a lot older in 1985 than he does now. He must have a great plastic surgeon.

  79. g.... ....

    I had no idea he did this song - I thought The Seekers recorded this first.

  80. V.... ....

    Rick is still performing today. I love all his music.

  81. v.... ....

    Thanks.

  82. P.... ....

    I had no idea that he did this song, although I heard it a few tijmes when it came out. He had some nice tunes.

  83. P.... ....

    Seekers version is there now (in case you were not aware, since you asked a month ago).

  84. C.... S....

    Rick was 22 in this video. Well, he could have been 21. The year was 1971. The year he turned 22

  85. v.... ....

    There was a great version of this song by The Seekers on youtube recently but I can't find it anymore. Someone please upload it!!

  86. W.... ....

    I prefer this live version to the one on the actual album on which it was released. It sounds better with Rick's guitar solo rather than the monotonous repetitive tuba on the recorded version. I think Rick is always at his best while performing live.
    Not to mention he looks like a doll in this video. So cute.
    I love this video, I watch it over and over lol. Thanks for posting it.

  87. E.... R....

    rick look so cute xD he is soo hot

  88. T.... ....

    thanks for posting this vid

    BTW love the cid boggels icon too miss the old carry on films

  89. T.... M....

    good song!

  90. B.... J....

    How lovely. You must reside somewhere in the USA. "We do this song @ church!!"
    Fuck! You yanks are so devoid of intelligence.....who goes to church in the Western World?? Oh yeah....dumbfuck Americans do!!

  91. M.... ....

    nice overalls! shit, I haven't heard this in years. Awesome

  92. g.... ....

    I remember this from a K-Tel album as a kid. Great tune. Peace. :)

    g.... ....

    22 Hits? I think this followed the opening track, Brownsville Station's "Smokin' In The Boys Room" on Side 1.

  93. p.... ....

    nice performance...i almost prefer this to the studio version...ace!

  94. L.... S....

    Izzy Foreal ( then Peter Knox ) recorded this video with Rick Springfield. Dave the Bloke Ovenden is on Drums. They were in there to do their own recording with perhaps Johnny and the Ringworms or the THIRD UNION BAND. They did that. On ABC. GTK - Getting to Know.

  95. J.... D....

    I remember that show!! You're the first person I've seen that remember that show. I was beginning to wonder if I had imagined it - I couldnt' remember the name of it. :) Wow - now I know what to put in the search field. Thanks for sharing. :)

  96. p.... ....

    Yes!
    Archie, Groovie Goulies, Sabrina the teenage witch, Fat Albert,My favorite martians (cartoon) ,and more. Their cartoons were pricey to make.

  97. O.... ....

    Yes and I think there was a record of the same title released. And Mission Magic was made by the same people that did the Archie cartoon shows.

  98. p.... ....

    Mission: Magic! is an animated cartoon starring pop singer and musician Rick Springfield. It was produced by Filmation, and was a spin off of the television cartoon show, 'The Brady Kids'. Although only 16 episodes were ever produced, it aired on the US television network ABC weekly on the Saturday morning lineup from from 1973 through 1975. It was also shown on Australian television.

  99. p.... m....

    OMG!!!!! I'm so glad you put this on here!!!!

  100. h.... ....

    Yes he was also in favor of the heavier sound, doing a metal version of Eleanor Rigby before leaving, his open mocking of the pink suits and the management might have gotten him dismissed from the group if he hadn't left. They should have listened to Rick as the group was attacked by a homophobic gang and Darryl Cotton was injured in the attack, this despite it was well known they were all heterosexual.
