I think David Crowder has "accepted the mantle of most soulful Christian singer ever" because both Mullins and Crowder were REAL about it, unlike some "christian" entertainers.

I used to keep children to stay home with mine and we played this everyday! Several are musicians now! This song is so amazing and real and full of wisdom!

I like this version better than the other one. I wish more live versions did the intro this way

First he starts with a dulcimer and strings...then goes to a Beethoven-ish piano solo...then adds an orchestra...then switches to gospel rock...then goes into the worship part of the song...WHO DOES THAT?! SO GOOD!

It's actually Bach-ish, since the piano intro was taken from Bach. Amy Grant's version tends to stay in the pop zone, while Rich's version, as you noted, segues into a rock beat. Very much of a progressive rock vibe here (aka 'Kansas/Kerry Livgren'), written when progressive rock was nearing the end, and disco had taken over. Amy is a capable singer, but Rich really does this song best.

I'm so glad she did not do Mercy Me's "I can Only Imagine", because I can't imagine (pun not intended) anyone other than Bart Millard singing that song. Then again, I prefer Michael Card singing his song, "El Shaddai" over Amy Grant's cover. To me, Card's stripped down version is more sincere and heartfelt.

My husband played Rich's music practically every day. He was our favorite musician. He was friends with Amy Grant and their producers gave some of his songs to her to record. His life was depicted in the movie "Ragamuffin", released a couple of years ago. He made music that can help others live the Christian life, wonderful music.

Rich Mullins wrote it. I think I like the live version best. I think this is probably my favorite song he ever wrote. I watched Amy Grant perform it, and even with all her backup singers and other artists she still lacks something. Rich has feeling in it as he wrote the song as a prayer.

He wrote it and gave it to amy grant because I believe she was more of a "star" at this time and he just wanted the message to reach as many ears as possible. It's all in the movie Ragamuffin, but it's been a while since I've watched it. If you'd like to know more about his life, that movie is a great place to start.

+enmaxus Read the story of his life. Nothing funny about it. He voluntarily lived on an Indian reservation and deliberately did not benefit financially from his creative work other than to make a modest, honest living.

+enmaxus I think the symbiosis of Rich writing this . . . Amy making it a best seller . . . then Rich's career advancing further .. . and his being able to demonstrate by how he lived humility, grace and charity . . . etc. . . etc . . . was a win win for both of them, and for fans of both of them. This song serves as a lynch pin for a lot of blessed mutual history of theirs. Or so I think. I'm glad we have a choice to hear either one depending on our mood, even all these years later. I normally relate more to Rich's almost contemplative tone but sometimes Amy's version is a great energizer.

I find Any Grants version artistically uncompelling, as so many popular hits tend to be. Good she could reach some people with it though.

I remember that album by Amy and this song was a different type of Praise song that sounded incomplete. When I heard his release of the tune, it had more reverence to it. It had a more heavenly bright Sunday morning feel to it with all of the brilliant piano riffs through out. Almost Classical. He was a genius..
