Rich Mullins - Calling Out Your Name Lyrics

Well the moon moved past Nebraska
And spilled laughter on them cold Dakota Hills
And angels danced on Jacob's stairs
Yeah they danced on Jacob's stairs
There is this silence in the Badlands
And over Kansas the whole universe was stilled
By the whisper of a prayer
The whisper of a prayer

And the single hawk bursts into flight
And in the east the whole horizon is in flames
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

I can feel the earth tremble
Beneath the rumbling of the buffalo hooves
And the fury in the pheasant's wings
And there's fury in a pheasant's wings
It tells me the Lord is in His temple
And there is still a faith that can make the mountains move
And a love that can make the heavens ring
And I've seen love make heaven ring

Where the sacred rivers meet
Beneath the shadow of the Keeper of the plains
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

From the place where morning gathers
You can look sometimes forever 'til you see
What time may never know
What time may never know
How the Lord takes by its corners this old world
And shakes us forward and shakes us free
To run wild with the hope
To run wild with the hope

The hope that this thirst will not last long
That it will soon drown in the song not sung in vain
And I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And I hear the prairies calling out Your name

And I know this thirst will not last long
That it will soon drown in the song not sung in vain
I feel thunder in the sky
I see the sky about to rain
And with the prairies I am calling out Your name

Rich Mullins Calling Out Your Name Comments

I was traveling across from Northern California to South Dakota on a road trip with one of my sons in the summer of 2007 when we discovered this song on the radio. We both were struck by it... as we drove through the waving sea of green grasses across the plains, through the spectacular Tetons, as we followed hawks on the wing with our gaze, and as we encountered shaggy bison in the wild. It was a breathtaking trip set to the inspiring lyrics, orchestration and sound arrangement of this tremendously and deeply spiritually MOVING song. The effect was that it set the tone for the entire trip, caused us to ponder God's Almighty handiworks, His love towards us, His majesty, His creativity... His POWER and beauty! His Love. This song did call out our names as we traversed the country... and two years later we moved to the beautiful Rockies of Colorado. My son had been paralyzed since birth from a congenital birth defect and he was somewhat limited but he had adventure in his heart and a strong heart for Jesus. He became enthralled with the wide open spaces, the wildlife, the complete beauty of God's many works. In the Fall of 2013 my son went home to Jesus on a Sunday morning... the last thing he said to me was, "I love you, Mom". My husband had a vision later that day and it was of my son, tall and straight and running around a big grassy bowl and leaping from one red boulder to another and laughing ecstatically... BECAUSE HE COULD!! Every time I hear this song now, I think of my awesome son set free from his earthly bounds and in the presence of His Savior. Praise God for placing such a gift into Rich Mullins' heart so he could bring this magnificent piece to our hungry ears and hearts.

Thankful that the Lord brought me and my wife to Arizona

I was a Christian and to me he was one the more authentic of the Christian musicians. I couldn't believe it when I was told of his accident and his death. I have always loved this man. I admired his level of selfish benevolence. I did not know at that time that I was an Israelite. I can now love Jesus more than ever. Sometimes I think of this man and his sincere love and wish he could be one of the Gentiles who are joining themselves to us. We follow a book of Acts way of life as seen in Acts chapters 2 & 4 and wish he could be here to see it. www.straitway.com

I think that he sings about Arizona

When I first heard this song I wept. I was not far off that again having just viewed this post many years after that first listening experience. The lyrics are just so evocative, they stir the soul. I have never been to Kansas or Nebraska, but after hearing this song I sure wanted to and hopefully one day I shall. Oh how the imagination and soul soars when I hear "To run wild with the hope", or "And the fury in the pheasant's wings". These are just a couple of phrases, but the complete song is so, so inspiring. Back in the CCM halcyon days I kind of put Rich and Keith Green is a similar sort of standing in my heart , (Keith of course passed much earlier). While Rich was far more "poetic" in my opinion, both to me seemed to be totally authentic, totally trying to live their lives without guile. Anyway, thanks for posting this. Its inspirational all these years later. God bless.

I REMEMBER LOOKING FROM THE MOUNT OF OLIVES OVER JERUSALEM WHERE JESUS GROANED IN HIS SPIRIT AND WEPT AND I WAS THINKING PONDERING IN MY SPIRIT THAT MAYBE HIS TEARS WATERED THE DESERT LAND AND HAS CAUSED IT TO BLOOM WITH HOPE AND LIFE

Does anyone remember Rich's song in Haiti

    T.... M....

You remember it ,I can't find it no where.

  12. B.... H....

I've been a storm chaser for more than twenty years. This song speaks to my heart about the Great Plains, where the skies and the land and the tumbled clouds and the long grass rippling in the wind become for me an altar. The wild, beautiful hand of my Father stamps creation with his love, and creation answers back in untamed praise. Rich Mullins saw it so deeply and expressed it so poignantly.

  13. E.... ....

I'm an atheist and I love this song and this man. Promoted two of his concerts. He was the real-deal and walked his beliefs. Not saying he was a perfect robot, but he really did try his very best to live his convictions. He always made sure his band and crew were fed and shared reasonably in his success. I did not know him well, only professionally, but we had three theological conversations that were so precious I so wished we had recorded them. He could be both passionate AND respectful of other pov and I always respected that in him. Not to mention he played a mean guitar! 😎

    E.... ....

Yes, he lived what he knew was true, and he is in heaven with his maker today. thanks for the encouraging words. 8*)

  17. M.... R....

Livin' in those cold Dakota hills now, and I've finally seen the fury in a pheasant's wings--Scared one into flight just the other day. Wish I could say I've felt the trembling of the buffalo hooves--but at least I've seen them from a distance, in the Badlands of Teddy Roosevelt National Park. Still miss Rich's music, but I'll always run wild with the Hope that he inspired, that he dedicated to the Keeper of the plains.

    M.... R....

@Mark Richardson - you miss Rich. After seeing, and crying over, “Ragamuffin,” I regret “missing” him too. A late 20th Century St Francis.

I did not know of him till shortly after his death.

Rich’s music is forever preserved YT vids*, records, tapes, & CDs. I’ve seen MANY but not all.

    Peace. Tony

Fascinating concept, man has figured out a number of the details that God has created and they set themselves up on their own Thrones, look how good we are. We have the devices that can take dictation and communicate all over the world in the blinking of an eye. At the touch of a button. But what of the creator with a capital C they give naught to God the Creator of all things, how foolish are we?

  21. s.... b....

  22. M.... C....

I suspect that Christ will say to Rich Mullins "Well done, good and faithful servant because I gave you a talent and you did not hide it, but you put it to work and gain more besides thus" then Christ will turn a scornful eye to the wealthy (formerly) "Mega-Preachers" and He will say to them: "You did not tell the truth about ME, you lied to the flock about ME, get into the Outer Darkness where there will be a weeping and gnashing of teeth" Honestly I felt inspired to write that.

Btw: "Wrong Side of Heaven" by Five Finger Deathpunch. Listen to it, try to render aid to those in need. Watch the video. Remember that Christians DO GOOD for a reason! Walking past a homeless Vet without asking if he needs help is well.....an abomination. Offer to help!!!

  24. B.... B....

On Oct 21st 2017, hearing this makes me think of his birthday on this day in 1955.  If he was still living he'd be 62.  There is a mighty wind of God's power coming to those praises and plains spoken of this classic.  When a piece of heaven Rich is enjoying comes down to earth those places Calling Out His Name will get a very timely response. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is shaking this nation forward and shaking it free.  This music is the legacy of Richard Wayne Mullins of Richmond, Indiana.  And how he is so rich today because he is enjoying the eternal treasure he wrote and sang about for two decades of the 41years and 11 months he spent on this terra firma.

  25. B.... B....

Every time I heard that twang of the dulcimer on the local Birmingham, AL contemporary station then I knew it was one of Rich's best works about to be played.  My half-Cherokee musician uncle (now in his mid-90's) heard this song on one of my tapes back in the 1990's and he said, "this sounds like the music of the natives of the Great Plains put to a Christian beat, I love it."  My favorite line is "He is shaking us forward and shaking us free."  I've never been any further west than Arkansas or Illinois and hearing this again makes me want to go there some day.  One day.

Tonight the moon is full over Nebraska where I am, and remembering when we went to church back in the day at Central Christian. J.... H....

    A) this has nothing to do with this song and b) no one, especially the Catholic church, asks Mary to forgive sins. That's not who Mary is. The Catholic church teaches that God forgives sins. We ask Mary to pray for us, no more. If someone taught you otherwise when you still counted yourself a part of the church, they were wrong to do so and I'm sorry for that.

    r.... d....

    Rusty, buddy, it's poetry! xox

    r.... d....

not pictures of angels with wings...

    r.... d....

They don't need them, but they may have them if they wish. Scripture in the New Testament tells us that His messengers can appear as smoke or flames of fire. This material world is nothing to them, they need no wings nor anything else tangible, yet they can manifest as anything. What a wonderful day that will be when we're all loosened from our material constraints. :)

  41. Y.... J....

good song i cant touch that.

  42. b.... b....

I met Rich two times in Rockford, Illinois. I was fortunate to see him play this song 10 feet away from me each time. I was a bright eyed 19 year old. Rich died on Interstate 39 in Illinois soon after. He said words to me that still ring in my ears years and years later. Miss you, Rich. Thank you for making your music for us to enjoy!

I have also thought it was creepy how he guessed his own death in his songs, especially Elijah and The Breaks

    T.... E....

The wild part is how time mrans nothing and everyone dead is still alive in spirit and they are not in Heaven yet so they are around..sleeping maybe. A blink of an eye will be so true. We all are of the spirit. This flesh is nothing but to fade. We will all find out what happens next, soon

  45. P.... e....

I really love this song, Rich Mullins is a talented artist.

Thank you Lord for blessing Rich Mullins so richly while he was on this earth so that we can forever be blessed by his prayers, praises and songs, in Jesus' precious name.

    A.... D....

he was all about pointing to our Lord Jesus Christ. her would never want anyone to look to him, but only to the the Only One. The One and only that created you, me and Rich. The One and only that died and lives to save us all. The is no one else. I can't stress this enough. I think Rich was here today he would say so too. Never look at any man or woman, no matter how good they appear to you. Fix your gaze on Christ Jesus and keep them there.

I'm an aspiring Christian song writer. no one has influenced me to take a step of faith in this direction as much as this guy. the thing that sets him apart I think is that his sincerity for God shows. in his live performances he had deepening thoughts. it's like his lessons and his frustrations where right there for everyone to learn from

  52. J.... i....

The Holy Ghost Told me this is very accurate, Even the pictures are very accurate.

  53. A.... K....

This song resonates with my soul so much. Whenever I see a vast expanse of openness, water, grass wetlands, I think of this song and my soul calls out his name with the natural setting. I can sense my spirit soaring over the 'prairie like' place. Its hard to explain.

  54. S.... E....

This song satisfies something in my soul. I grew up in Kansas and will forever be in love with the majestic plains and beautiful skies. When you gaze out at the wide open expanses you can't help but be filled with inexplicable hope and wonder. "I hear the prairies calling out Your name."

    S.... E....

+Sarah Eurit I'm from Kansas too - and there's something in this song that will be forever connnected to driving with family across the state during building storms and dramatic sunsets. Feeling God's presence all the way.

Stefano, they did not have all of those things you are talking about 2,000 years ago. However, Jesus did give specific instructions that if you look at what he is saying, can relate to many of our issues today.

  71. S.... G....

today Christians in America seem to be focused on GOP, TAXES, abortion, TAXES and issues that Jesus did not even talk about.

  72. S.... ....

Rich Mullins had to have been one of the most passionate for the love of Christ singers. My only regret is that I learned of him too late and never had the opportunity to hear him in person.

Rich would just be a bonus (and a great one)

  88. H.... ....

I am very glad that even people who aren't Christians can see how much of an amazing example of Jesus Rich Mullins was.

  89. T.... ....

I could listen to this just for its poetic value. In my opinion this is the pinnacle of praise and worship -- you don't need to use the same cliche formats, words, and melodies of every other praise and worship song out there. He's not even saying (directly) "I praise you" but a couple times. He's simply illustrating the creativity and majesty of God and his creation, conjuring concepts of power and beauty in things we don't often think about, or ways we don't think about them. Wonderful.

  90. f.... ....

What you are seeing and hearing indicates to me that you hunger and thirst for righteousness. Give God a year or two of your undivided attention, pray that he will connect you with real, authentic, wise and loving Christians. You discern well, continue to trust in the one in whom you know are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The Lord's forgiveness and restoration is for all who come to Him with a heavy heart. He will take away the load and give you rest and peace for your soul.

  91. K.... Z....

Listening to this song I think of a child on their knees praying to God. This in a field in the Midwest. God listens to that child... a child of faith (whatever the age.) Why does God listen to us and respond?.... Such love I cannot comprehend. Why does God care for us? Why does he act in our life?.... Why is he so persistent in His obsession for us?

  92. K.... Z....

Why does God choose us to relay His message? This is a burden far to great to bare. Yet we do it......

  93. M.... C....

wed love to have you back. listening to this music proves the hounds of heaven are on your trail!

  94. g.... ....

Indeed! God created the universe to display His creativity and knowledge. We screwed it up, and He came, died, and rose again to claim His creation back, thus displaying His love.

I think his "secret" is what he said about God's grace (u can listen to it here on youtube ("Grace" -Rich Mullins)... he said how much he realizes he needs God's grace and how much he relies on Him, who has such great things in store for us! I think that's what all of us need to completely do...imagine the world if we did!
