Somewhere in the 1990's when I first saw this video, it literally put me in a trance. It blew me away. I love the song, but the video, in particular, mesmerized me for years.

It seems the radio has forgotten about R.E.M. What a shame. Still my favorite band EVER.

Monster is such a great album. I'm glad it's getting more love over the years because when it came out people were very critical of it. My favorite r.e.m. albums are automatic for the people, monster, and adventures in hi-fi. They took risks on those album without losing their voice. When my band opened a R.e.m. tribute show we had to choose from a list of songs (the headline got first pick) and this song wasn't taken. Hell it wasn't even on the list! So we opened the show with this song and the crowd LOVED it!

I remember growing up listening to REM. I liked their songs. But nothing touched me the way that "Monster" did. The first time I saw the video for "Bang and Blame," it floored me. They had my complete attention. It was so emotionally complex. It tapped into feelings that I didn't know how to express, and maybe still don't. It's really hard to admit that I always worry that I'll end up being one of my parents- I'll either be the banger or the blamer. That fear is kind of crippling. I don't feel like I can have any serious relationships because it's too risky. This song (and the amazing video) felt like the first and only time anyone understood that feeling. It's still a personal favorite.

One of those songs you hear in your youth, that just becomes more apt and relevant with every decade that goes by. Relationships are wearing, abusive, exhausting and vampiric. You kiss on me, tug on me, rub on me, jump on me, you bang on me, beat on me, hit on me, let go on me.

Stipe always did have a very ambivalent view of women - you can hear it throughout the album on Bang & Blame, Tongue ('I want to tell you how much I hate this') and I Don't Sleep, I Dream ('You come into my little scene, hip hip hooray). Monster is such a brooding, erotic record but at times almost malevolent. The tenderest moment is his plea to Kurt Cobain, 'Let Me In.' It's no surprise that Stipe eventually chose men - I often wished I was more like him, not merely bi-curious, but bisexual. It's R.E.M.s most underrated album and is best enjoyed with a bottle of fine wine while you look back through your own lens on the mess that is modern heterosexual relationships.

This song makes me think of the guy I had an on-off, mostly one-sided romance with for 25 years. He was always making excuses for his behavior, and my self-esteem was so bad that it took me that long to well and truly break his hold on me. If they say you're the only one but they're making excuses why they were with another one, you ain't the only one.
