Reed, Lou - Strawman Lyrics

We who have so much to you who have so little
To you who don't have anything at all
We who have so much more than any one man does need
And you who don't have anything at all, ah

Does anybody need another million dollar movie?
Does anybody need another million dollar star?
Does anybody need to be told over and over
Spitting in the wind comes back at you twice as hard?

Strawman, going straight to the devil
Strawman, going straight to hell
Strawman, going straight to the devil

Strawman
Strawman
Strawman
Strawman, yes

Does anyone really need a billion dollar rocket?
Does anyone need a $60,000 car?
Does anyone need another president?
Or the sins of Swaggart parts 6, 7, 8 and 9? Ah

Does anyone need yet another politician
Caught with his pants down and money sticking in his hole?
Does anyone need another racist preacher?
Spittin' in the wind can only do you harm, ooohhh

Strawman, going straight to the devil
Strawman, going straight to hell
Strawman, going straight to the devil

Strawman
Strawman
Strawman
Strawman, yes

Does anyone need another faulty shuttle
Blasting off to the moon, Venus or Mars?
Does anybody need another self-righteous rock singer
Whose nose he says has led him straight to God?

Does anyone need yet another blank skyscraper?
If you're like me I'm sure a minor miracle will do
A flaming sword or maybe a gold ark floating up the Hudson
When you spit in the wind it comes right back at you

Strawman, going straight to the devil
Strawman, going straight to hell
Strawman, going straight to the devil

Strawman
Strawman

Reed, Lou Strawman Comments
  1. R.... W....

Totally under appreciated track from a totally under appreciated musician. Much more to LR than 'Take a Walk'.

  2. K.... B....

WE MISS YA LOU. SEE YA REAL SOON.

What a song, and WHAT an album.

Fuck he sticks it up em………………...……...and they don't like it up em!

  7. M.... B....

New York minstrel was gone and nobody will be able to take his place. Whoever trying is not gonna be the same poetry skill, cause skill has gone with the same man whose look was a capability to see and translate oppressed people inner feelings! It was not adrift his famous nickname he got, cause ever better known as damn poet. Nothing was done for new yorkers high society! Always and actually closer to a kind of punk heritage, something that comes from New York dolls or maybe Ramones. Lou will be the greatest ever since the first album until ever.

  8. A.... P....

THESE are the lyrics for our age! LOU is the man who speaks my/our mind!!!

  9. S.... K....

love this song. listening over and over i feel so angry about trump etc.

    Lou's best tune.

  15. B.... B....

Socialism in motion. NY Style. :)

  16. t.... ....

Awesome rock song. Brilliant guitar break too. Just a few notes with heaps of feel and power. Take note, shredders.

    t.... ....

One fact i hate about shredders is that the care only about notes, scales etc. But they put zero effort to find a good tone. Lou's guitar tone tone is amazing. Playing 289459 notes x second that sound like plastic or a toy found inside an happy meal ain't a good idea.

  17. D.... A....

‪Love that ‘durty geetar’ sound and.. well.. never one to ‘pull punches’ lyrically too.. ‘gotta’ admire that eh?! 👍🕶💫‬

  18. A.... M....

  49. S.... G....

The loss of Lou Reed hit me hard. Lost my father several months earlier and Reed's passing two days after my mother's 62nd birthday. It shocked me.

  50. S.... G....

Been listening to Lou Reed since age 11. "Heard Sweet Jane" on my older brother's Walkman, and never looked back. Took me from Sesame Street to the Dirty Blvd. I'm 33 now, but he was like my musical father. A hero. Reed was the reason I write and play guitar. Personally, my favorite album is Street Hassle. Thanks, Lou, your music keeps my rock n' roll heart beating.

    S.... G....

    I love Street Hassle!

  51. J.... H....

I understand that Lou Reed didn't´t like Jesse Jackson so much.

  52. w.... m....

    Whew!!...dat's da bollux!!

  53. A.... M....

Lou continues to speak the Truth to power!

  54. E.... G....

This song is a masterpiece...not big fan of LR....but this is a star track on a star album..

  55. J.... S....

letting alone 'rock ´n´ roll animal' i´ve been loving the 'new york' album the most. R.I.P, Lou!

    A.... M....

Alexandre M My mum does too. She points that out every time she listens to this song

    A.... M....

At 1:05 it does sound like "starman" but throughout the song Lou alternates between "strawman" and "starman" that's what I'm hearing too.

    A.... M....

...especially in light of the opening lyric "Does anybody need another million dollar movie?"....

  72. D.... S....

I bought this Lou Reed song on cassette 1990. Listened to it on my walkman during Gulfwar Desert shield/Storm years 1990/1991. I still have the cassette. Sounded great!

  74. T.... A....

wow that last verse kind of sounds like he predicted 9/11:
Does anyone need yet another blank skyscraper?
If you're like me I'm sure a minor miracle will do
A flaming sword or maybe a gold ark floating up the Hudson
When you spit in the wind it comes right back at you

  75. R.... H....

lou was cool. a real east coast, nyc, anti-hippie. he helped me survive being a teenager

    R.... H....

Agreed and I was probably a hippie.

    R.... H....

    In fact isn’t this anti-selfish ?

    R.... H....

    strawman says it all..

    R.... H....

in fact, I never heard Lou Reed so angry as he is in this song :)

    R.... H....

    Me, too.

  76. M.... ....

@truthaboveagenda jesus would very possibly agree with this song ; it has that clear the temple energy

    J.... a....

@morrisonreed1  Like many, i grew up listening to a lot of rock music. Years ago i realized that many of the most popular musicians: stones, who, black sabbath, linda ronstadt... Yelled out numerous songs that were complaints, no solutions- just whining really.

This album is an example of lou reed complaining. He lived a do as you please life- heroin, weed, wearing make-up... and then complains of how shitty american culture is.

                                                     Joseph

    J.... a....

+kittyand fox I appreciate some of his lyrics, it's that the older i become the more i realize that an overwhelming amount of rock music is complaining about life, by numerous selfish, queer millionaires. Joseph

Perfect record (and song) to mark the end of the 1980's. Amazing. You will be missed, Lou.

  81. G.... H....

    whats to say

  82. D.... H....

This was the song that sold me on this album. Shame "End Of The Innocence" won the Grammy for "Album Of The Year" instead of this masterpiece. Corporate Rock strikes again.

  83. P.... M....

Strawman is one the greatest rock songs ever written. Never a big Lou Reed fan myself-the bitter, dark, pointless meme of that entire New York scene offers no hope really. But New York is different. Every song, an angry, sad and compassionate Lou leads me to tears. And Strawman is the kind of song I wish I could write. It's perfect in its structure and Lou's mad as hell voice is so superb and authentic that to this day I can still hear it echoing off the walls of Alphabet CIty's drunken and OD'd tenements. Strawman is always the right song for whatever times one finds oneself living in.

    P.... M....

@Patrick Miller Thank you for putting in words what my feelings are. No, really Thank You! These folks are not extinct.

    P.... M....

New York minstrel was gone and nobody will be able to take his place. Best track on one of his best albums - this song is pure Lou Reed: angry, bitter, wistful and funny as fuck… really missing you, Lou.
