I see a lot of people here debating whether this song refers to Joey's breakup with Linda and her marrying Johnny later on, but that's not true at all. In fact, "The KKK Took My Baby Away" had been written before Linda left Joey for Johnny. The actual story behind this song takes us back to the time when Joey dated this mentally unstable African American chick whose parents weren't pleased with her going out with a white guy (for those who don't know, Joey was admitted to mental hospitals more than once during his life, the first time to St. Vincent's, and it was on one of these occasions that he met this girl). When they broke up, people were surprised not to see her or her stuff in Joey's apartment anymore. When they asked him about her, he jokingly replied: "The KKK took her away."
